Thank you very much for hosting a house (or campus, church or other
group) party to screen this half-hour film, The Day the Water Died. This
guide is meant to help you easily facilitate the screening and provide
meaningful ways to take action with your group. Together we can make a
difference by sending a strong signal to ExxonMobil that it is time to pay the
Alaska fisherman, and finding additional ways that we can create energy
savings in our own homes and communities. Thanks again for being a
leader in this effort!
More information on the episode and news on the issue are at:

March 24, 1989 will forever plague history as the day of one of the worst
environmental disasters of our time. Eleven million gallons of oil spilled into the Prince
William Sound killing thousands of sea birds and ocean animals, destroying a complex
and delicate ecosystem. Exxon assured the country it would clean up the spill and
promised that those affected would get their lives back. Seventeen years later, the people
are still waiting for their lives to become whole again.
Cashing in on record-high oil prices, ExxonMobil recently announced
unprecedented profits. The world's richest corporation cleared nearly $11 billion in the
fourth-quarter of 2005 and more than $36 billion for the year.
If you are taking pictures, don’t forget to have everyone sign a release – the form is at the
end of this document. Be sure to make copies for everyone to sign. You can let us know
you have photos in the feedback form online:
www.sierraclub.org/houseparty/feedbackhost/ and mail the releases to Sierra Club,
attn: Jenny Coyle, 85 Second Street, San Francisco, CA 94105.
Preferably on a speakerphone so your whole group can hear, dial into the conference
line and codes that will be posted on Friday March 24th at:
www.sierraclubtv.org/episode-exxon/teleconference.asp
2. Tell ExxonMobil CEO to Change Course! If you have internet access at your
screening location, go online to www.sierraclub.org/exxposeexxon and have your
guests take turns signing the statement of support asking ExxonMobil's new CEO to
change the company's course and act responsibly. Let CEO Rex Tillerson that you
will not purchase ExxonMobil's gas or products, invest in ExxonMobil stock, or work
for the company.
You can also sign another online petition on the Take Action page of the website for
the book, “Sound Truth and Corporate Myth$: The Legacy of the Exxon Valdez Oil
Spill.” by Riki Ott, Ph.D. www.soundtruth.info/takeaction.htm has a petition to
reopen the United States and State of Alaska to reopen the 1991 civil settlement and
claim the entire $100 million to restore populations, species, or habitats that suffered
significant losses or declines as a result of the spill, and that suffer injuries now that
could not have been known or anticipated at the time of the settlement.
3. In the group setting, provide papers and pens to write a letter to the editor. It works
best to use your own language rather than a form, and some tips and talking points
can be found on the ExxposeExxon campaign site:
www.exxposeexxon.com/action/lte.html
4. Commit to ways you can reduce your own dependence on oil and gas.
