Organization Background and History

Established in 2012, Pure Talent Elite Track and Field (PTE) is a non-profit organization that
works primarily with kids ages 6-18 in the Kansas City Metro region, with locations in Kansas
City, Kansas and Kansas City North.

The mission of Pure Talent Elite is to drive the athlete to aspire to achieve in leadership,
discipline, integrity, and an excellence for education through the sport of track and field. We
will provide athletes the opportunity to compete at a higher level of competition while
emphasizing hard work and personal growth to create value for themselves with their talent.
Our club philosophy revolves around proving a safe, positive environment to give our athletes
the opportunity to improve in the development of their skills. Athletes will increase in their
leadership skills, public speaking, critical thinking skills, and community service opportunities.
Members of the PTE track club will grow in their sense of ownership and decrease in their sense
of entitlement.

We target youth focusing on numerous objectives and goals:

1) Encourage a healthy lifestyle;

2) Perform to the best of their ability;
3) Set and reach personal goals
4) Learn to be a great teammate
5) Allow our athletes to earn scholarships
6) Read 3 books during the duration of the summer season
7) Compete against elite competition
8) Serve their local community

During the 2013 track season, we will work with numerous students in Missouri and Kansas;
including Kansas City Kansas, Leavenworth, Liberty, Parkville, Platte City and Kansas City
Missouri, serving nearly 100 student-athletes.

Club Description
Pure Talent Elite Track and Field is a youth track and field club registered with both United
States Track and Field (USATF) and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). The program is
designed to meet the needs of all participants regardless of their performance level.

PTE will place an emphasis on numerous areas outside of competition. These areas include
service, reading, ACT prep, and academic/life skills.
2 Pure Talent Elite Track and Field Proposal|

Community Service: Our athletes will complete a minimum of two community service projects
each summer to learn the value of serving their local community. The initiatives will include
spending time volunteering at Harvesters and feeding the homeless.

Summer Reading Initiative: We desire for our younger athletes to continue reading during the
summer months. We feel it is good to start preparing our athletes for high school and college.
We will implement a three month reading series where students will read a selected book and
have an opportunity to discuss this book at a designated time. Also students will have the
opportunity to present their thoughts on the book through a public speaking format. It is
important for our students to begin practicing this important art.
ACT Prep: We provide our own ACT preparation course called Club 25. It is exclusively for
Pure Talent Elite athletes that are sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school. The goal of
Club 25 is to educate and prepare our students to score a 25 or higher on each segment of the
ACT.

Academic and Life Skills: The mission of the academic and life skills academy is to support our
athletes educationally with an emphasis on academic achievement and life skills. Our hope is this
will propel them to becoming productive citizens and competitive athletes in the 21st century.
We firmly believe and communicate excellence begins in the classroom. A primary goal for Pure
Talent Elite is to help our athletes secure college scholarships. The way we do so is by teaching
our athletes how to excel in track and field. In addition to the work we do on the track, our staff
will assist our student-athletes in obtaining college scholarships by talking to college coaches,
monitoring their NCAA academic eligibility, encouraging them to attend ACT preparation
classes, and by assisting their parents in completing necessary forms.

The Academic and Life Skills academy assists our high school student-athletes by:
hosting meetings to educate our parents and student-athletes on NCAA eligibility
requirements and the recruiting process
offering NCAA worksheet preparation and academic monitoring to ensure NCAA eligibility
requirements are met
assisting our student-athletes in preparing a biography, video, and athlete profile to send
to college coaches
offering sessions to prepare them for college recruiting trips
arrange college campus visits

Lastly, the Academic and Life Skills Academy recognizes all student-athletes that make the all A
or A/B honor rolls and who also receive Satisfactory or Excellent Conduct each grading period
by awarding them with a certificate of achievement and highlighting their academic
achievements on our link on the Pure Talent Elite Track and Field website

Unique to PTE is our teaching principles from specific management styles are infused in our
teaching, which includes principles such as: integrity, compliance, value creation, knowledge,
humility, respect and fulfillment. We teach our athletes to think early about how they can create
long term value beyond just athletics.

Need for the club:

Studies have found that 1 out of 3 kids are now considered overweight or obese in the United
States1. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, close to half
of all children will experience bullying while at school. These figures, among many other are
reasons we believe Pure Talent Elite is needed today. By providing an environment in which our
young athletes can feel free and willing to discuss issues are essential to the building and
development of our kids.

A primary focus of PTE is to reach at-risk youth. In the schools served in the Kansas City
Kansas schools, 75 percent of students are economically disadvantaged. According to Kids
Count Census Data (2008), 26 percent of Wyandotte County youth and 22 percent of Jackson
County youth are living in poverty stricken neighborhoods, compared to 15 percent in the state
of Kansas and 18 percent in the state of Missouri. Many of the students we hope to target will be
of single parent homes. In the state of Kansas, 31 percent of children live in single parent
households and 35 percent in Missouri2. With Pure Talent Elite, we hope to provide
opportunities for the majority of our students who would not otherwise receive the kind of
opportunities we hope to provide.

Track and Field does not exist in isolation. PTE is here due to the increased interest and need by
the younger generation to combine sports with other activities, such as cultural and educational
interests. These interests include but are not limited to: nutrition, healthy lifestyles, the
environment and peer involvement. Our kids face many issues in todays society from drugs,
alcohol, peer pressure, bullying, to abuse. PTE is implementing activities outside of the sport to
help kids deal with todays social issues. The TEAM activity involved in sports develops a
respect for competition and loyalty to peers, a sense of equality and independence. We believe
sports are an excellent preparation for human relationships. We will use sports and athletics to
teach a great number of desirable things.
We have also come to the realization there are kids who may not be able to compete at a high
level due to health issues. As an organization we want to find ways to get these kids involved
with track in events that allows them to participate while not having major implications on their
health. We plan to work closely with the local Sickle Cell Disease organization to get kids
involved with events such as race walking, jumps and throws.

We have confidence in the fact sports benefit our youth by addressing the following life values
and skills:

Physically by learning skills related to sports/athletes and improving physical

conditioning.
Emotionally by building their feelings of self-esteem through recognizing individual
achievements
Socially by forming bonds of friendships and learning good sportsmanship.
Technically by Learning the sound fundamentals and maximize the opportunity for
individual development

Travel Team Competition: Pure Talent Elite Track and Field Club will use the months of March
and April to travel to various track meets across the United States. The reasons behind this
decision are three fold. Many of our elite athletes are not afforded the opportunity to run outside
until the month of May due to the Midwest weather. The goal is to go from the indoor season
right into outdoor and attending meets in different locations. It has become apparent during the
national meets the athletes from Florida, Texas, Georgia, Arizona, and California tend to fill the
medal stands at the conclusion of the meet due to the tropical advantage, which allows them to
start running in meets in March. While our athletes in the Midwest do make it to the finals, we
feel the opportunity to run in March and April will allow them to peak at the right time for our
national meets. This also allows our athletes the opportunity to compete against some of the top
athletes in the nation prior to nationals. Many of our local elite athletes run against the same
athletes week in and week out and have little competition. The opportunity to compete against
others with marks similar gives them a measuring point moving through the summer season.
Third, many of our athletes have had little opportunities to travel outside of the Kansas City
Metro area. We will be allowing young athletes the opportunity to see life outside of Kansas City
which we hope in return will motivate them to work hard and develop goals to work towards for
their futures. Our travel team will consist of athletes finishing in the top 20 nationally in an
event.
