Name of lesson: Circles and Spheres
Grade level: Grade 4
Group size: Whole group
Subject: Mathematics
Standard: Standard 4.0 To solve problems, communicate, reason, and make connections within
and beyond the field of mathematics, students will identify, represent, verify, and apply spatial
relationships and geometric properties.

Lesson Objective: The students will be able to estimate and calculate the cross-section of a
shape (circle) by using paper and pen or by mental calculation.
Materials Needed: Interactive Smartboard, teacher laptop computer, Windows OS 8.0 or higher,
visualizer or overhead projector, a teacher's marker, blank piece of paper, 1st transparent
example (transparency of three basketball drawings), 2nd transparent (1 sample sentence
problem with answer and 4 practice problems without answers), transparency of a student
worksheet, student worksheets, and reward stickers.
Procedures: Lay down on the visualizer the 1st transparent. Read the directions, then using the
ball in the picture, use a marker to draw a line across the ball and then draw a corresponding
shape, a circle, below the ball to show the actual cross-section shape of the ball if cut. Ask the
students other possible shapes, after hearing all possible answers, ask one student to walk to the
board to cut a line on the ball, and ask another student to approach the board to draw the
corresponding cross-section shape below the ball. Next, use the 2nd transparent and read the
directions. Using the first sample question, "if the diameter of the sphere is 4 centimeters, its
radius is _____ centimeters", the teacher will also read the sample answer, "2", pointing out that
division was used to find the answer. Proceed to ask the next four questions, calling on four
different students to answer the questions provided. The students, using their own piece of paper
and pen will find the answer or do mental calculation using division to find the answer to the
sample question. Gather the student worksheets and give each student in the class a worksheet.
Place the transparency of a student worksheet on the visualizer, then read the problems and call
on a student to give the correct answer for each problem. To answer the first question on the
problem, read the question and point to the picture of a corresponding shape on the worksheet,
then call on a student for the answer. The student will use a paper and pencil or mental calculate
to find the answer using division. Call on a student and upon getting the correct answer, record
the student's name on the blank piece of paper to remember who to give a reward sticker to at the
end of the lesson. Repeat the process of reading the question, pointing to the corresponding
picture of the shape, calling on the student, recording the student's name on the reward list, until
all of the questions on the worksheet are answered.
Assessment: Students who were called upon and answered correctly will be handed out reward
tickets at the end of the lesson.
