WhatisNPT&whatareitsapplications?

WhatisarelationbetweenNPS,NB&ODofapipe?
NominalPipeSize(NPS)isaNorthAmericansetofstandardsizesforpipesusedforhighorlowpressuresandtemperatures.Pipesizeisspecifiedwith
twonondimensionalnumbers:anominalpipesize(NPS)fordiameterbasedoninches,andaschedule(Sched.orSch.)forwallthickness.NPSisoften
incorrectlycalledNationalPipeSize,duetoconfusionwithnationalpipethread(NPT)

NB(nominalbore)istheEuropeandesignationequivalenttoNPSisDN(diamtrenominal/nominaldiameter/DurchmessernachNorm),inwhichsizes
aremeasuredinmillimeters.NB(nominalbore)isalsofrequentlyusedinterchangeablywithNPS.

ODistheoutsidediameterofthepipeandisfixedforagivensize.

TheNPSisverylooselyrelatedtotheinsidediameterininches,butonlyforNPS1/8toNPS12.ForNPS14andlarger,theNPSisequaltotheoutside
diameter(OD)ininches.ForagivenNPS,theODstaysconstantandthewallthicknessincreaseswithlargerSCH.ForagivenSCH,theODincreases
withincreasingNPSwhilethewallthicknessincreasesorstaysconstant.Pipesizesaredocumentedbyanumberofstandards,includingAPI5L,
ANSI/ASMEB36.10MintheUS,BS1600andBSEN10255intheUnitedKingdomandEurope,andISO65internationally.

ForNPSof5andlarger,theDNisequaltotheNPSmultipliedby25(not25.4).

standardusedforNPTwhichcoversdimensionsandgagingofpipethreadsforgeneralpurpose.

Mostcommonlyusedsizesforpipes&fittingsbytheU.S.supplierscommonlyare1/8,1/4,3/8,1/2,3/4,1,1,1and2inch.Smallersizesthanthose
listedareoccasionallyusedforcompressedair.Forsizeslargerthan3inchesandabovethereareothermethodofjoiningavailablesothreadingisless
frequentlyusedinthissizes.

SometimesNPTthreadsarereferredtoasMPT(MalePipeThread),MNPT,orNPT(M)formale(external)threadsandFPT(FemalePipeThread),
