Strengths of the Software: The strengths of this software is that it is an
engaging game that allows for students to play an instructional, simulation game in
which they are placed in the role of a young, American colonist who must choose to
either fight for independence or remain loyal to the crown. While this is a
simulation game, there are many aspects of the game that integrate content
required to meet Common Core Standards. There are also features for educators,
such as resources, to help tie in the interactive game with content lessons.
Suggestions for Improvement: Areas for improvement are inclusive of including
small drill assessments that can be forwarded to educators to record student
progress. Mission US is also currently unavailable for mobile devices which may
limit student engagement if they need to complete portions of the game after
school.

Description of how to implement in the class: In order to implement this

lesson into the classroom, teachers will either need to go to a computer lab or have
access to computers and/or laptops in the classroom. All students will also need
access to the internet as well as the ability to register for the game. While it is not
required for teachers to include additional materials to guide students along for this
activity, Mission US does provide educators with additional resources they can use
to further connect the game to content. These additional materials can be modified
to meet the needs of students as well as give students the opportunity to use
higher-level thinking skills.

In World History, teachers can implement interactive game as a wrap-up to the unit
that overviews the causes and effects of the American Revolution. While World
History does not goes as in-depth in comparison to U.S. History over the American
Revolution, this game can be implemented to help review and apply content
knowledge in a way that students may find more engaging. Teachers may also
incorporate student reflections from their characters development in the game to
content material learned in class.

* Examples of common instructional models include whole group, teacher-led, student

self-paced, small group, or individual learning activities. Use as many of these
descriptors or other descriptors as apply.
