Former addict shares
story of battle with
prescription drugs
His children gave
him strength to
overcome addiction

For approximately 18 months of
Chris Wizners life he did not care
about anything except where he
would get more pills.
I remember the mornings when I
was out of pills because I had used
them all and it was the worst pain.
Like a hangover times 10, Wizner
said.
It was not until Wizner woke up
one morning and was considering
switching to heroin that he knew he

had to change his ways or he was go-
ing to die.
Wizner has three children, all boys,
who he said gave him the strength to
overcome his addiction.
Wizner, a Watertown native, was
a police officer for 15 years, five in
Milwaukee County and 10 in Ocono-
mowoc.
It all started when he hurt his back
in 2009. Wizner took a few weeks off
work before he was cleared to return
to duty. However, the police depart-
ments physician did not clear him,

to a report of a fully engulfed
structure at N9213 Ash Road.
The garage was 20 feet by 30
feet and the five calves inside in
addition to a new four-wheeler
were a total loss.
The fire melted siding on the
house nearby but fortunately
did not spread.
Assisting at the scene were
the Watertown Fire Depart-
ment, Sullivan Fire Department
and Oconomowoc Fire Depart-
ment.
The incident is still under in-
vestigation.

happen.
One option was back surgery, but
the likelihood of it being successful
was very low so Wizner opted for
pain management. He was prescribed
oxycodone, fentanyl and morphine.
With a little encouragement from
the woman he was dating at the time,
Wizner filled the prescriptions.
When I started taking them at first
I felt good. I was taking way more
than I was supposed to and then af-
ter awhile I wasnt taking them to feel
good, I was taking them to not feel
bad, Wizner said.
According to the National Institute
on Drug Abuse, addiction is a chron-
ic, often relapsing brain disease that
causes compulsive drug-seeking and
use despite harmful consequences.
While the initial decision may be vol-
untary, the brain changes over time
and hampers a persons ability to re-
sist the impulses to take drugs.
In the United States alone, more
than 15 million people abuse pre-
scription drugs which is more than the
combined number of people who re-
port abusing cocaine, hallucinogens,
inhalants and heroin according to the
foundation for a drug-free world.
Within a month of when he started
using, Wizner lost his job.
Wizner was taking 150-500 milli-
grams per day, well over the 30 mil-
ligrams he was prescribed.
Wizner began seeing cash doctors
who would provide prescriptions in
exchange for cash or money orders.
Wizners ex-wife, Cindi, and other
concerned friends and family mem-
bers began asking what was wrong
when he was unable to keep his head
up or his eyes open. However, Wizner
denied everything saying everything
was fine.
According to MyAddiction, an ad-
diction and recovery resource, denial
is strong in opioid users. Symptoms
include continued use after negative
consequences, defensiveness, excus-
es and lack of personal hygiene.

less denial if they are treated with

Council OKs
TIF District 7

The Watertown Common Council unani-
mously approved TIF (Tax Increment Fi-
nancing) District 7 and its related project
plan in its meeting Monday night. TIF
districts are used to encourage the re-use
of existing commercial and industrial sites
by creating incentives for developers. TIF
allows developers to use up-front public
expenditures to develop land and infrastruc-
ture. The developers then pay the initial
expenditures back over time through dedi-
cated property tax revenues.
TIF District 7 will encompass about 200
acres of property in the south central part
of the city corporate limits. The aim of TIF
District 7 is to rehabilitate land parcels
that exhibit conditions of economic obso-
lescence, blight and vacancy that have a
negative effect on property values. Alder-
man Augie Tietz made a motion to amend
the resolution to include two properties, by
request of the owner, within the districts
boundaries and that was approved as well.

sive plan that would expand the definition

Cruz, Sanders seek
wins in Wisconsin
MILWAUKEE (AP) Republican Ted Cruz and Dem-
ocrat Bernie Sanders are angling for victories in todays
Wisconsin presidential primaries that could give their cam-
paigns a needed boost but still leave them with mathemati-
cally challenging paths to their parties nominations.
While Sanders remains a force in the Democratic prima-
ry, a win over Hillary Clinton in Wisconsin would do little
to significantly cut into her lead in delegates that will decide
the partys nomination. The stakes are higher for Cruz, who
trails Donald Trump in the GOP race and sees Wisconsin
as a crucial state in his effort to push the party toward a
convention fight.
We are seeing victory after victory after victory in the
grassroots, Cruz said during a campaign stop Monday.
What we are seeing in Wisconsin is the unity of the Re-
publican Party manifesting.
With the White House and control of Congress at stake
in November, leaders of both parties are eager to turn their
attention toward the general election. Clinton would enter
the fall campaign saddled with persistent questions about
her honesty and trustworthiness, but also with a significant
demographic advantage. Its an edge Democrats believe

Things continued to take a
downhill slide for Wizner.
I progressively got worse. I
was living with this girl and the
kids would be there and wed
be sleeping all day, partying all
night and drinking. I just didnt
care, Wizner said. I thought
I was a pretty good dad but
when I was on these pills noth-
ing mattered. That was the first
thing you worried about in the
morning when you got up.
Wizners middle son, Car-
son, recalls a time when his fa-
ther was absent.
There was one time I need-
ed help with a homework prob-
lem at 7 oclock at night and
he didnt come home until 3 in
the morning and I didnt know
what to do.
Eventually Wizners ex-wife
quit trusting Wizner and did not
let him have the children.
The lies began to build, be-
coming second nature, until he
had a small breakthrough.
When his girlfriend came
home one morning at 10 oclock
and had already taken three
pills, he knew it had to stop and
gave her an ultimatum. She had
to pick him or the drugs.
She left, and, knowing he
had to stop, Wizner kept using.
He burned through $23,000, his
electricity was turned off and
eventually he was evicted.
Wizner resorted to living in
his car.
It was summer and it was so
hot, but I didnt have money for
gas to run the air conditioner,
Wizner said.
On some occasions Wizner
would put $20 of gas into his
vehicle, go inside the station
and tell them he did not have
any money. He said usually
someone would step in and of-
fer to pay for him.
After awhile he moved in
with a college friend from Mar-
shall and began having thoughts
of heroin.
I woke up one day and I
thought I needed heroin or
something because I couldnt
get enough pills, Wizner said.
Theyre hard to get, but heroin
is something anyone can get.
Thats the wake up call Wiz-
ner needed.
I dont know what hap-
pened but the day I decided I
needed heroin I knew I was go-
ing to die, Wizner said.
He went to see a doctor and
explained he had been using for
18 months. The doctor told him
he had to get to the hospital and
do 90 days of intensive inpa-
tient treatment.
Wizner did not want to be hos-
pitalized so he quit cold turkey.
I went through 10 days of
the absolute worst pain you can
imagine, Wizner said. Every-
thing ached and I was throwing
up and I had my car in the ga-
rage twice trying to kill myself
because I just couldnt deal
with it anymore.
According to Narconon,
withdrawal symptoms include
agitation, muscle pain, bone
pain, depression, diarrhea,
chills, insomnia, vomiting and
nausea.
As Wizner began to resur-
face from his oxycodone haze,
the shame of what he had done
began to wash over him.
The embarrassment of what
I did and how I let the boys
down. I let everything in my
life go because of those pills,
Wizner said.

ed crying and asked if I was going to
die. I had to go from being a father
figure to a complete failure.

When the withdrawal symp-
toms subsided, he picked him-
self up and went to a Narcotics
Anonymous meeting in Ocono-
mowoc. When he turned to the
guy in the seat next to him, he
was hit with a reality check.
I sat down and in the seat
next to me is a kid I arrested
probably three times for drugs,
Wizner said.
Wizner received a key chain
for attending his first meeting
and slowly things began to get
better. On the condition that his
ex-wife could call him at any-
time and ask him to report to
the emergency room for a blood
test, he was allowed to see his
children again. He started
coaching the lacrosse team his
son Carson played on.
Unfortunately, signs of re-
covery did not completely erase
the bad times.
There were times I would
go to the church in Waterloo
and Id just kneel down and
pray and cry. I had nothing. I
lost everything, Wizner said.
Wizner said he expected
himself to relapse. He promised
his children he would try his
best not to, but he was not posi-
tive he could hold out.
According to Everyday
Health, one year after stopping
opiates there is an 85 percent
chance of relapse.
Months into his recovery,
Wizner still had neck and back
pain. On those days he had to
focus on making it through the
day without using.
Cameron, Wizners oldest
son, now 17, said he did not
know what was going on but
tried to block it out.
My mom would tell me
something was wrong with dad
but she didnt know what and
to keep an eye out, Cameron
said. I didnt really want to be
involved so I tried to ignore it
and we didnt talk much for a
year or so while he was using.
Its a lot better when he started
recovering because thats when

communication started. I sup-
port him and Im really proud
of him. I knew he could do it.
At one of the lacrosse games,
Wizner met Toni, a woman he
married in 2012.
Carson, now 14, said he was
always more of a daddys boy
and he started going every-
where with him.
He was coaching lacrosse at
the time and when he started to
get clean Id go to NA meetings
with him and practices. I just
like being around him. It was
awesome to see him progress
and get better. Im really proud
of him, Carson said.
Things continued to im-
proved for Wizner. He received
his 30-day key chain and then
his 60-day key chain. Soon he
was sober for a year and now he
has been clean for almost five
years.
I dont really get the urge
anymore, Wizner said. I had
to quit drinking too because
alcohol is a drug and looking
back I had a pretty bad drinking
problem.
Wizner said if he were to
ever use again he could never
face the four most important
people in his life.
I couldnt do it. I couldnt
look them in the eyes and tell
them again, Wizner said.
They were my strength. I
know I didnt do it for myself.
If it wasnt for Toni and my
kids, I would be using.
Wizner said he gives his chil-
dren credit for being so sup-
portive after all the lies he said
when he was using. The boys
supported him on his tough-
est days, telling him he could
it, and he knew he couldnt let
them down.
Carson recalls one of his fa-
vorite moments throughout his
fathers recovery.
He was about a month clean
and he woke us all up one night.
He had found a pill in his car
and he flushed it down the toi-
let, Carson said.
Wizner is not shy about shar-
ing his experience. He likes tak-
ing about it because he knows
it is a problem that can affect
anyone.
Wizner said it is important to
note people can and do recover
from addiction.
You have to want it. Court
can tell you you have to, or
work or a spouse, but you have
to want it more than anything,
Wizner said. Nobody can take
the fact that I beat my addiction
away for me.
September marks five clean
years for Wizner. He moved
back to Watertown in 2013 and
is now employed at a local piz-
za place.
He said the free time he gets
to spend with his children is
well worth the drop in salary.
As long as he can put food on
the table and a roof over his
childrens heads, he could not
be happier.
I still say I am a drug addict
in recovery. I will always be in
recovery, Wizner said.
Wizner said he is always
willing to help anyone at any-
time.

A group of community mem-
bers is planning an evening
program called, Stairway to
Heroin beginning at 6 p.m. on
April 26 with a resource fair
and a program at 6:30 p.m. at
Watertown High School.
