Random Variable

I For a given random space of an experiment, a random

variable is a function that associates a number with each
outcome
I Example:
I How many credits you have this semester?
I How old are you?
I How many classes you failed in the university?
I Which semester are you in?

Two types of random variables

I Discrete random variables are those whose values constitute

a finite set or can be listed in an infinite sequence where is
clear which number is first, which is second and so on
I Continuous random variables are those that:
I The set of possible values consists of all the values in a single
interval, and
I No value has positive probability of occurring.

Bernoulli Random Variable

I Any random variable whose only possible values are 0 or 1 is

called Bernoulli random variable.
I What is your Gender? (1 for males 0 for females)
I Tossing a coin ( 1 for Heads 0 for Tails)
