Indian Standard
UST OF
PlGMENTS AND COLOUR ANTS FOR
USE IN PLASTICS IN CONTACT WITH
FOODSTUFFS, PHARMACEUTICALS
AND DRINKING WATER

O. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards
Institution on 5 March 1981, after the draft finalized by the Plasncs
Sectional Committee had been approved by the Petroleum, Coal and
Related Products Division Council.

0.2 The packaging of foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals is essential for

their conservation, transport and handling. It also avoids contarnmarion
and maintains hygienic conditions. There" always a possibIlity of
transfer of part of packaging matertal to the packed matenial due to
intimate contact of each other. Therefore, formulation 01 the packaging
material must be selected to ensure that any such transfer is at a mini-
mum and substances which do migrate f,om package to the packed
material cause no toxic hazard on consumption. These considerations
are equally important in case of processing equipment and utensils which
come 10 contact with food, pharmaceuticals, etc.

0.3 This standard is expected '0 serve as a basic guide on the constitu-
tion of the plastics with regard to their colouring matters whicb are
considered toxicologically safe and not on tbe manner of their actual
processing or use. The list of pigments and coJourants prescr-ibed in
this standard IS based on the information available through published
literature of the French Regulation and other naeronal legislarion
reports. The toxicological effects of these colourants have not been
investigated so far.

0.3.1 In this standard, limits for copper and ti" have not been
prescribed as copper and tin are not released from metallic pigments to
toxic Iimirs.
IS I 9833 U81

1. SCOPE

migration from the fimshed product and shall show no signs of instability
or degradation during processing.

particular, if the following impurities are present these shall not exceed
the hmit specified below.
