1
Virtual I/O Server What?
What is VIOS?

Appliance - runs in a partition on a POWER6/7 server or blade

Provides virtual resources to AIX, Linux, and IBM i (i7.1/i6.1) client partitions

Facilitates sharing of physical I/O resources between partitions

Core function is virtual I/O: disks, tape, optical, Ethernet

VIOS packaged in PowerVM

Advanced functions (Suspend/Resume, LPM, AMS, NPIV, etc)

Two Virtual I/O Server partitions recommended to provide redundancy

Partitions can have a mix of physical and virtual resources

Except blades/PureFlex, and certain functions e.g. LPM

3 2013 IBM Corporation

Virtual I/O Server Why?

Why use VIOS?

Benefits of virtualisation
Increased utilisation
+
Improved service
+
Improved flexibility
=
Reduced costs (hardware, floor space, energy, licensing)

Faster response to changing business need flexible

infrastructure

Foundation for future

2
To VIOS or not to VIOS
It depends!

VIOS not usually the best match with IBM i when

Using only internal disks
Only running a single partition

VIOS is often a good match with IBM i when

There are many partitions
Multiple operating system environments e.g. IBM i and AIX / Linux
Creating/deleting partitions often e.g. for testing
Requirement to attach to certain external storage (wider range supported via VIOS
than direct attach)

If all partitions to run IBM i only

Consider strategy, advanced functionality requirements, etc
Is VIOS still best option?
Is IBM i hosting IBM i sufficient?

There are always exceptions to above

5 2013 IBM Corporation

External Storage

Wider range of external storage supported

with VIOS than with native IBM i attach

Install via SMS

Create a partition for VIOS

Activate the partition
Select SMS for Boot mode

Lets begin with HMC

13 2013 IBM Corporation

Create partition profile

14 2013 IBM Corporation

7
Activate the VIOS partition

15 2013 IBM Corporation

Activating the VIOS partition

Notice that the Open a terminal window

checkbox is greyed out

8
Installing from Local Repository
Assumes you will boot over the network as the
install image is on HMC need to ensure that
networking is setup correctly

NIM Server IP
Address is the ip
address of the
HMC.
Here the image
VIOS_V2.2.2 has
been previously
imported

17 2013 IBM Corporation

Import install image from HMCs DVD or

remote NFS or SFTP server
If you click on Import, you have following options :

Remote SFTP server

HMCs DVD drive

Remote NFS server

18 2013 IBM Corporation

9
Or via HMC Management task

19 2013 IBM Corporation

Local Repository example

If you desire to change adapter setting,

click Advanced first (when you get back to
this screen, the values seems to be
blanked out again, and you have to re-fill!)

10
VIOS ip settings

Enter the ip information for the

VIOS server this will be used
to configure networking on the
VIOS server as part of the
install and click OK

Install process begins

22 2013 IBM Corporation

11
And progresses

23 2013 IBM Corporation

The screen auto-refreshes!

Hint:
For better scrollable
view - click on the
bookmark star this
bookmarks the page.
Open browser and go
to that recently
bookmarked page
OR
ssh into the HMC and
check
/var/log/nimol.log

24 2013 IBM Corporation

12
Easy to scroll and manually refresh

25 2013 IBM Corporation

Usually

Auto-selects disk to install VIOS to

hdisk0 usually
proceeds without user interaction

In my test a problem with hdisk0

So then you need to open a terminal window
and follow the prompts to select a disk

26 2013 IBM Corporation

13
As hdisk0 was not available

Select the disk to install to

27 2013 IBM Corporation

Install progresses
