Today I assisted with the infant parent education session
on infant development. The session is for caregivers and
their babies of one year or younger to come and receive
information about the topic. The topics change weekly and
repeat on a needs basis. The purpose of this workshop was
to help parents become more aware of the developmental
milestones in their babys life.
Objectives:
1. For the participants/caregivers to learn about infant
development and crucial development milestones.
2. To give the participants and opportunity to ask any
questions they have about their babys
development.
3. For Participants to learn about the Nipissing
assessment and understand how to properly use it
on their own child.
Description:
1. We explained brain development in infants and
why it is important in the early years to support
development by fostering a nurturing environment.
2. We gave each parent a copy of the Nipissing
assessment that was appropriate to their childs age
and we explained how to use it.
3. We asked the parents if there was anything on the
Nipissing assessment that their child was not doing
and we gave examples of how to encourage that
skill with their baby.
The attendance of the workshop was successful. There
were ten moms with their babies. This shows that there
was an interest in the topic and the parents were willing to
learn. The parents asked questions and participated in the
activities.
During this workshop, I learned a lot about common
concerns amongst mothers. Certain topics kept
reappearing such as introducing solids, and sleeping.
Knowing the concerns of parents is important in order to
ensure parents are receiving the information they
need/want. There will be information session on both
introducing solids and sleeping in the future.
