BASS GUITAR WORKOUT SCHEDULE FOR 2017

Goals for daily and weekly section of bass guitar practice routine

Scales Daily Goal Reach 120bpm with metronome on A major Scale.


Scales Weekly Goal Increase daily bpm by 25% with A major Scale.
Scales Monthly Goal Hit 25% bpm increase with A,D,G and C major Scales.

For example, if you are not reaching your bpm goal for the week, it could be a picking issue

You have to then focus on your picking technique before coming back to the scales
exercises with your increased technical skills.

It might seem like you need a lot time each day to even touch upon these concepts. Dont
worry about cramming these skills into each practice sessions.

Instead focus on touching each of these essential skills over the course of a series of
practice sessions that you repeat each week.

PRACTICE ROUTINE 1 FOCUS ON HARMONY AND MELODY


SECTION 1 - Chords and Chord Progression 10 minutes

Develop specific chord shapes


Learn inversions for any chord type, i.e. m7
Practice a chord progression using these inversions in multiple keys, i.e. l-lV-V

Work on playing chords in a few positions, for a song youre learning

SECTION 2 Scales and Arpeggios 20 minutes

Learn a new scale in 12 keys practice it finger style, slap style and thumb style
Play a mode and its related arpeggios in all keys
Run a practice pattern through a new scale
Using the following books to learn new scale patterns
o Daily chop Builders
o Muted Grooves
Play one, two and three octave arpeggios and scales shapes for a chord type, i.e maj7
Practice continuous Scale and Arpeggios exercise in ii V I progressions
Learn the a lick from 1001 Lick

PRACTICE ROUTINE 2 FOCUS ON TECHNIQUE AND SOLOING

SECTION 1 Technique 20 minutes

Speed drills with a metronome, steadily increasing the speed. Using Dmitri Universal
licks
Legato exercises through scales or finger pattern
Picking exercises using Right Hand drive
Stretching exercises to work on fretting hand dexterity.

SECTION 2 Soloing and Groove 10 minutes

Solo over a static chord with a specific scale or arpeggio


Solo on one string at a time to work on fretboard fluency
Work on a specific outside concept
Practice the R-5-R-a and R-5-R-b Walking Bass line for Autumn Leaves
Learn basslines from Jon Liebman
Learn slap bass lines from Slap It.

PRACTICE ROUTINE 3 FOCUS ON EAR TRAINING.

SECTION 1 - Ear Training


Pick out the chords to a song by ear
Learn a riff/Lick from a recording
Transcribe a solo by ear from your favorite player using Jermaine Morgan Albums and
Tal Wilkenfeld Album
Sing intervals, scales, arpeggios, or other musical devices.

SECTION 2 Learning Songs

Learn the chords to a new songs


Learn the bass line and melody line to the tune
Learn the riffs and/or solo and/or licks from the song

REST DAYS

SECTION 1 Listening - 30 minutes

Listen to a solo youre learning on repeat


Listen to a new album
Listen to a new artist you just discovered

SECTION 2 Music Theory 30 minutes

Read about a specific theory concept youre studying


Write out theory exercises such as key signatures, scales, chord tones.
Analyze a song or progression youre learning to play
Learning a new musical term

Your 30 minute routines below should cover each of these 7 concepts in your weekly
practice sessions.
