11th and 12th March 2017 2nd Sunday of Lent Year A

Dear Parishioners,
In the first reading today, Abram was told by God to leave his country, his family and his fathers
house to go to a new land, unknown to him.
Most of us are familiar with the experience of displacement whether its simply moving to a
house 100 metres down the street, or moving to another country halfway across the world. The
feeling of being lost and disoriented can be surreal, especially in the case of moving countries:
feeling oneself a stranger or outsider, having a different accent (or even not speaking a word of
the new language!), the different lifestyle, way of dressing or eating, social etiquettes and
expectations... Often it involves a radical process of conversion, of letting go of some values and
ways of being and adopting new ones. In fact, we lose not just things, but a part of ourselves. In
such stressful circumstance, what was (or is) our source of strength, comfort and hope?
Many moments in our lives, we experience these displacement moments not just physically
when we move house, but also emotionally (change of job, marital status, going through the
different stages of life...). It is part of lifes dynamic that things change, and with it the need to let
go and embrace new realities. But all of us need something to anchor us down, that sense of
security, of stability, of familiarity... one way or another, deep down we long for something
eternal, something that doesnt change, that we can depend on no matter what.
Abram responded in great faith, and went as the Lord told him. He
had the certainty that he was doing Gods will, and that God was
with him. Jesus, in the gospel, had an even more powerful
experience of assurance. He was at a point of his life where he
understood that the cross lies ahead of him. He was about to be
betrayed, accused falsely, abandoned by his closest friends, tortured
and killed. Jesus understood the trial that awaits him, but he also had
that one security and certainty: that he was Son, Beloved,
favoured. And being Son, Beloved, and favoured, he knew
that he could trust in the Father. This was his source of strength,
comfort and hope. Is this not that security that each one of us desire?
I pray that this Lent season can be a time of grace, where we too can
share in this experience of Jesus transfiguration and hear the Father
saying to us in the depth of our hearts, You are my child, the
Beloved!
