Summary of essential Study conducted in elementary schools grades 1-4

information: Students either spent time during reading block reading silently (SSR) or
reading out loud with a computer program
o Program listened as students read aloud and assisted in unknown
words
o If student hesitated, helped students to sound out the words
o Was not as effective with miscues
Pre-test and Post-tests were given to each student
Students who used the computer program showed higher increase of scores
than the students who just completed SSR
o Increase in word identification, blending, and spelling

Potential relevance to This article shows that SSR alone will not help increase students
your research topic comprehension. There needs to be explicit reading instruction as well. The
and study: computer reading program was interesting to read about, and is something to
consider for future reading instruction, however, it is not applicable in my
study. It is important to remember to help students find just right books, to
aid in their understanding and comprehension. The reading program did that by
testing the student and constantly measuring data. The SSR program that was
conducted at the schools allowed students to read anything of their choosing. I
am working with the students to help them find high interest books on their
level. This may help their comprehension and will hopefully help increase their
enjoyment of reading.
