www.aldingacc.org The saying goes that from little things, big things
grow, and this is certainly proving true for the newly

group for shared learning and enjoyment. Convenor
Carolyn Hart, called a meeting to test the level of interest

Inspired by the belief that the word Willunga
means place of green trees, a logo has been developed
and a web site created to publish information about the
group and provide resources for players.
Beginner or expert, everyone with a ukulele is
welcome at Willunga Ukuleles. Group gatherings will be
informal and social, with separate sessions aimed at
helping beginners build their skills and confidence.
Opportunities to play at events and functions will also be
sought to give players an opportunity to perform in
public.
The first regular gathering was held at the Alma
Hotel in February, 2017. Further details can be found at

The Aldinga Community Christmas Lunch Organizing

Committee once again were able to create a very
successful Christmas Day Lunch at the Aldinga Institute,
where more than 100 people were able to come and enjoy
a traditional Christmas Lunch, along with a visit from
Santa for all the children.

But of course, the Committee could not have organized
this event without the tremendous support of our local
community organizations, including St. Vincent de Paul
Society, Centacare, Aldinga Beach Childrens Centre,
Communities for Children - Onkaparinga, The Salvation
Army, Onkaparinga Youth Services, (Studio 20), Aldinga
Community Centre, and the City of Onkaparinga.
And without the sponsorship and donations from our
local business community, events such as this would Little Galileans
simply not be possible. So a huge thank you goes to the
Bendigo Bank, Louis Place, Home Grain Bakery, Playgroup
Aldinga Central Takeaway, Drakes Supermarket, and
That Cherry Guy.
We also received tremendous support this year from the
Willunga Lions Ladies Auxiliary Boutique, The Galilee
Op Shop, Rotary Club of Seaford and ABBTA (Aldinga
Beach Business and Tourism Association). The

received from our local community organizations and

who volunteered their time towards making the 2016
Community Christmas Lunch such a special event for all.
The Committee thank each and every one of you. The

will be stepping down as Chair this year, after being on
the organizing committee since its inception.

10.30am. This week we read the story
called Going on a bear hunt. We then went
on a bear hunt, we went past the frog
pond, over the Galilee hill, through the
grass and almond forest to the bear cave in
the hall. In the hall we had a teddy bear
picnic with our teddy bears and some fruit
then we danced the teddy bear twist with
our bears. We had a great time and there
were some very tired bears at the end of all

A Radical Solution
In the late 1960s I was operating a two week 4WD
safari along the Transcontinental railway, heading
for the Nullarbor Plains. We were in a Land Rover
station wagon, and I was carrying two blokes and
two ladies. The ladies were sisters, and regular
clients of mine.
Soon after the trip began I realized I had a problem
with the blokes. They didnt get on, and it was very
obvious from the start. I thought they might improve,
but they became worse. We would pull up for the
night, set up camp, boil the billy, and break out the
grog. After a couple, one of the blokes would pick
on a subject, and the other would take a totally
opposite view. They would argue in a heated
manner. The ladies were embarrassed, and I was at
my wits end.
Next day as I negotiated the wheel tracks through
sandhills along the line west of Tarcoola, I wrestled
with the problem. It couldnt go on for another
eleven days. About mid afternoon I had a plan,
albeit a desperate one. Later, I pulled up and made
camp. This time I gave them a big full bodied
McLaren Vale red wine, before I lit the fire.
Tonights fire was different. I built a solid platform of
small pieces of Mulga wood like boy scouts do. I
then sat the billy on top, nearly a foot off the ground,
and lit the fire. The ladies noticed my elaborate
preparations, but Im sure the blokes didnt They
were already arguing. I went around to the back of
the Land Rover, and started preparing the evening
meal, and could hear the argument getting even
more heated. I had a quick pannican of red wine
myself to give me a few revs! Then, letting out a
roar, I flew out from behind the vehicle and headed
for the boiling billy. In my peripheral vision I could
see I had everyones attention. Lining up the billy
like an old fashioned place kick, I gave it an
almighty boot. The billy became airborn, flying into
the bush. I then stopped, glared at the men, who by
this time were sitting bolt upright with their mouths
wide open, and eyes protruding. At the top of my
voice I screamed bastards!, before turning around
and stalking off into the bush. When I was out of
sight, I sat down on a stump, and contemplated
what I had done. As I made my way back, I
observed the scene through the twisted branches of
the Mallee trees. It was a classic. Every member of
the party appearing INDUSTRIOUS , but doing
bugger all, the ladies were resetting the table,
probably for the fourth time. They reckoned I had

lost it. I just put the billy back on the fire, and served
up the meal, and did nearly all the talking. Later that
evening , one of the blokes took me aside and
apologized- said he had never been affected by
anyone like that before. So, for the rest of the trip I
made sure one of the girls was sitting between the
two men a rose between the thorns!
FOOTNOTE
On a trip in northern Australia some years later with
a party of ten, we had a similar problem, with
another two blokes at loggerheads. I said to my
mate Dont worry, I know how to sort these blokes
out. Well, I did exactly what I had done on the
previous occasion, setting the billy up on a platform
of timber before lighting the fire. After my tot of
dutch courage, I rushed out behind the vehicle
giving the best roar I could dredge up. I lined up the
billy for the kick of a life time, enthusiastically
swinging my right boot forward. Unfortunately I
missed my target and for a second I thought my
right ankle was broken! I had connected with the
ground just under the billy, which tipped over putting
out the fire! The whole camp errupted in laughter
and when theyd settled down, I told them the whole
story about my previous experience. This,
fortunately had the desired effect anyway, but a hard
way of going about it.

 Airline Lunches
I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat
down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight
from Perth. 'I'm glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps
I will get a short sleep,' I thought.
Just before take-off, a line of diggers came down the aisle
and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I
decided to start a conversation. 'Where are you blokes
headed?' I asked the Digger seated nearest to me.
'Puckapunyal. We'll be there for two weeks for special
training, and then we're being deployed to Afghanistan.
After flying for about an hour, an announcement was
made that lunches were available for five dollars. It would
be several hours before we reached Melbourne, and I
quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time..
As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his
mate if he planned to buy lunch.
'No, that seems like a lot of money for just an airline
lunch. Probably wouldn't be worth five bucks.
I'll wait till we get to Pucka. His mate agreed.
I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying
lunch.
I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight
attendant a Fifty dollar note. 'Take a lunch to all those
soldiers.' She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her
eyes wet with tears. She thanked me.
'My young bloke was a digger in Iraq, it's almost like you
are doing it for him.'
Picking up ten lunchboxes, she headed up the aisle to
where the Digs were seated. She stopped at my seat and
asked, 'Which do you Like best - beef or chicken?'
'Chicken,' I replied, wondering why she asked.
She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a
minute later with a dinner plate from first class.
This is your thanks.
After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the
plane, heading for the rest room.
An old bloke stopped me. 'I saw what you did. I want to
be part of it. Here, take this.'
He handed me twenty-five dollars..
Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Captain
coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he
walked, I hoped he wasn't looking for me, but noticed he
was looking at the numbers only on my side of the
plane.. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held
out his hand, and said, 'I want to shake your hand.'
Quickly unfastening my seat-belt I stood and took the
Captain's hand. With a booming voice he said, 'I was an
army pilot a long time back. Once someone bought me
lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.'
I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of
the passengers.
Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch
my legs. A kid who looked about 18 was sitting about six
rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to
shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my
palm.
When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to
depart. Waiting just inside the aeroplane door was a man
who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket,

turned, and walked away without saying a word.
Another twenty-five dollars!
Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering
for their trip to up to Puckapunyal.
I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five
dollars. 'It will take you some time to reach Pucka. It will
be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You Blokes.'
Ten young blokes left that flight feeling the love and
respect of their fellow Aussies. As I walked briskly to
my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These
soldiers were giving their all for our country.
I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so
little.....
A digger is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a
blank cheque made payable to ' AUSTRALIA'
For an amount of 'up to and including my life.' That is
Honour, and there are way too many foreigners in this
country who don't understand it.'
Aussie Bush Etiquette
In General:
1. Never take an open stubby to a job interview...
2. Always identify people in your paddocks before
shooting at them.
3. It's tacky to take an Esky to church
4. If you have to vacuum the bed, it's time to change
the sheets.
5. Even if you're certain you're included in the will, it's
rude to take your ute and trailer to the funeral.
Eating Out:
1. When decanting wine from the box, tilt the paper
cup and pour slowly so as not to bruise the wine.
2. If drinking directly from the bottle, hold it with only
one hand.
Entertaining at Home:
1. A centrepiece for the table should never be anything
prepared by a taxidermist..
2. Don't allow the dog to eat at the table, no matter
how good his manners.
Personal Hygiene:
1. While ears need to be cleaned regularly, this should
be done in private, using one's OWN ute keys.
2. Even if you live alone, deodorant isn't a waste of
money.
3. Extensive use of deodorant can only delay bathing
by a few days.
4. Dirt and grease under the fingernails is a no-no, it
alters the taste of finger foods and if you are a
woman it can draw attention away from your
jewellery.
Theatre/Cinema Etiquette:
1. Crying babies should be taken to the lobby and
picked up after the movie ends.
2. Refrain from yelling abuse at characters on the
screen. Tests have proven they can't hear you.
Weddings:
1. Livestock is a poor choice for a wedding gift.
2. For the groom, at least, rent a tux. A tracksuit with
a cummerbund and a clean football jumper can
create a tacky appearance.
3. Though uncomfortable, say "yes" to socks and
shoes for the occasion.

Saturday a month. Aathi is commencing his general practice experience at Aldinga Medical Centre. Aathi
has previously worked as a surgical registrar in Queensland but decided that general practice is the direction
hed like to take for his future. Aathi will be working with us for 6 months from 6 th February before he moves
to the Northern Territory for his next placement.

DR REBEKAH WEBB
We are absolutely delighted to welcome Rebekah back to Aldinga Medical Centre. Rebekah has passed her
final exams and is now a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Rebekah was also
Registrar of the Year in 2016. Rebekah will be working Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and one
Saturday a month.

DR JOSEPHINE NEWTON
Will be extending her rotation for a couple of months before she leaves us to take up general practice in the
city. We will enjoy having Jose for that extra time as she has been such a valuable part of the team and well
miss her when she leaves.

Sadly we will be saying goodbye to Kirsten Missen and Andrew Davids who will be moving on to their next
rotations to complete their registrar training. Kirsten will be moving to Bayside Medical Centre and Andrew
will be moving to Morphett Vale Family Practice. We have loved having Kirsten and Andrew as part of the
team for the past year and we wish them well with their forthcoming exams and a brilliant future ahead, and,
who knows, we may see them here again in the future.

The Get Together Club
A club exists in Aldinga Beach for adults with a
disability and their families.
The group encourages friendship, fun, connection and
inspiration.
It is the only group of its kind in the southern area.
The first meeting held at the Aldinga Life Care Hall was
a great success, with families sharing a meal, playing
games, and getting to know each other.
A variety of activities are planned for the monthly group
including singing, painting, puppet making, and guest
chefs. Ideas for activities are welcome and encouraged.
The Get Together Club has received a Community
Grant from the City of Onkaparinga and is also
supported by Minda Incorporated, Carer Support and
Disability SA. New members are always welcome.
The Get Together Club is held on the first Friday of

TOOLS AND HOW TO USE THEM DEPARTMENT.

PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWDRIVER:
Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for
opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil
on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies,
to strip out Phillips screw heads.
STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER:
A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert
common slotted screws into non-removable screws and
butchering your palms.
PRY BAR:
A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or
bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50
cent part.
PVC PIPE CUTTER:
A tool used to make plastic pipe too short.
HAMMER:
Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer
nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the
most expensive parts adjacent to the object we are trying
to hit.

The club caters for both ASSOCIATION
CROQUET (the traditional game), which
develops physical skills and keeps the mind
agile and GOLF CROQUET, a short devious
and fun filled game which develops both skill
and tactics. Both games are played on equal
terms between both genders and the first
coaching sessions are absolutely FREE.
RICOCHET is also played.
The courts are located at the rear of the
Aldinga Bay Bowling Club facilities at the
Aldinga Sports Complex, Port Rd, Aldinga.

We are always looking to expand its player
base and any interested players are more than
welcome to join us. We cater for young, old,
male, female, experienced or novice.
Games are played in the old show hall in
Willunga.
We have new equipment and loan bats are
available.
Games are played on Tuesday & Wednesday
nights starting at 7.00 pm & only cost $3.00
per night.
These are separate competitions but you can
play both nights if you wish.
This is a friendly but socially competitive
grade of table tennis and supper is always
served.

LIONS BOUTIQUE
Just in case you are a newcomer to
our area, let me tell you about our Lions Bou-
tique, which is situated on Butterworth Road,
Aldinga Beach.
We are a happy crew, and are open
for business each Wednesday and Saturday
from 7 am until 1.30 pm, and would welcome
your visit to us. Selling pre loved clothes,
bric a brac, toys, books, actually, you name
it, and we probably have it.
We would be pleased to accept any-
thing that you want to part with, as if we
cant sell it, it will go to our Monthly auction,
held the last Saturday of each month (except
December,) at Binney Road, Willunga.
Collections can be arranged.
I would take this opportunity to thank

which enables us to give back so much to our

series with meetings being held in both
Aldinga & Willunga.
This term the Philosphy groups will be
discussing :- The Ethics of Recreational
Drug Use, The Origin of Life, Capitalism,
Fiedism, Bertrand Russell and Morals.
The aim of U3A is to provide mental and
physical stimulation in an enjoyable
atmosphere.

ARE WE THE ONES WHO ARE AGING?
I recently saw a distraught young lady weeping beside her
car.
'Do you need some help?' I asked.
She replied, 'I knew I should have replaced the battery to
this remote door unlocker. Now I can't get into my car.
Do you think they (pointing to a distant convenience
store) would have a battery to fit this?'
'Hmmm, I don't know. Do you have an alarm, too?' I
asked.
'No, just this remote thingy,' she answered, handing it and
the car keys to me. As I took the key and manually
unlocked the door, I replied, 'Why don't you drive over
there and check about the batteries. It's a long walk....'
A woman at work was seen putting a credit card into her
floppy drive and pulling it out very quickly.
When I inquired as to what she was doing, she said she
was shopping on the Internet and they kept asking for a
credit card number, so she was using the ATM 'thingy.'
