Electrical Engineering Faculty

Recruitment Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is two-fold:

1) To give you a better sense of your role and tasks as a potential faculty member in
ALUs Learning Team, specifically in the design and delivery of our Electrical Engineering
programme, and
2) To give us a better sense of your skillset and fit for this team.

Your recruiting assignment has three parts. We estimate this will take around 20 hours of
work, so you have 10 working days to submit your deliverables. Once we have received your
deliverables, we will follow up to schedule the 30 minute Session/Interview with our Learning
Team. Please let us know if you do not think you will be able to meet this deadline.

Supporting materials:
ALU Core Skills Map - an overview of the focal points of our Foundation Core (the
first year courses taken by all ALU students). These skills are aligned to answering the
questions, Who does a transformational leader lead? and How does a transformational
leader lead?
Learning Lab Report: Our Secret Sauce -
This excerpt from our pilot test of our
learning model introduces you to the aspects of our learning model, and the beliefs
about learning that underpin it.
The Assignment:
The Manifesto on Teaching Engineering:
Respond to the prompt below in 1-2 pages.
In an ideal world with no constraints, how should a student learn to become an engineer, and how
could that translate into a programme of study for 30 students? 300 students? 3000 students?

Domain Map:
What are the major domains within electrical engineering that a student needs to have
mastered by the end of their undergraduate education? Create a map of those domains that
shows associations, hierarchical structures, or any other relationship between the domains (As a
point of reference, see the Foundation Core Skills Map that .
Detailed skills within 2 domains
: Choose 2 domains and detail the core skills that
would contribute to mastery of that domain.

The Session Plan & Interview:

Choose one of the core skills you detailed above and think about one element of it that a group
of 20-30 students could learn in 30 minutes. For inspiration, read
Learning Lab Report: Our Secret
Sauce from the supporting materials above. Design the session that would lead to that learning
and submit a session plan that includes the following:
1. The learning outcomes : what do you want students to take-away from this lesson?
This could be a skill, a concept, a specific awareness, etc.
2. Your faculty objectives for the session:what do you hope to accomplish, by the
end of the session? What is your mission for this 30 minutes?
3. The agenda and the plan : what activities will happen, for how long, what are
students doing in each step?
4. Prep materials : if needed (not mandatory), include no more than a 15-min worth
of prep materials so that your students can come prepared.
5. In-class materials : If there are any handouts or online materials that you want the
students to explore during your lesson, please include the links to these materials as
well.

As your interview you will facilitate this session for members of the ALU Learning Team (~ 4).

Deadline:
The expected turnaround time for this lesson planning submission is 10 working days. We will
follow up to schedule a time slot for your session presentation once we have received your
session plan.
