This paper proposed a hybrid finite-volume/finite-difference method for

one-dimensional open channel flow simulation. The performance of the

numerical method is validated by various examples. The proposed hybrid
FVM-SIFM can also be used in combination with other efficient time-
stepping schemes.
Readers of AMM would be interested in the topic of this paper, and the
proposed model is well described.
Overall, the paper could be accepted in the current version, while some
suggestions are as follow:
1. There is a type error in Equations (8), i.e. Q(N+1) and Q(N), should be
Z(N+1) and Z(N).
2. Fig.2-Fig.4, the legend should be added for each figure. And the bed
elevation should be added in each figure for clear expression.
3. A diagrammatic sketch describing variables of A, h, b, zb, R for
irregular cross-section should be added.
4. In Abstract, the sentences (line16-18) including reference of Ying et
al. (2004) would be rewritten, as the reference is not necessary for
ABSTRACT.
5. ALL test examples are about single channel without branch. Authors
are encouraged to simulate tidal flows in complex river networks.
