Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase of Proficy Real-Time Information Portal. This guide
covers most of the details you will need to know to get the product up and running,
including:
What's New in Proficy Portal 3.5- descriptions of the features new to the latest
version of Proficy Portal.
Proficy Real-Time Information Portal Editions - breakdown of the features
included with each edition.
Proficy Real-Time Information Portal Connectors - licensing details for
connectors.
Drivers - lists the drivers that Proficy Portal installs and configures.
Proficy Portal Licensing - licensing details.
Most businesses use tools to help their decision makers analyze sales, visualize financial
data, and make process improvements that enhance the manufacture of their products.
Analysis of business and process data is critical to knowing where to make investments
and to learning how to improve a company's performance.
Proficy Portal provides superior data analysis tools in a personalized web environment.
Using Proficy Portal and a web browser, you can make key decisions by analyzing and
visualizing data from historians, SQL relational databases, process databases, or OPC
servers. By combining and comparing historical, real time, and SQL data you can see how
the leading performance indicators for your company are progressing, allowing you to
make sound business decisions.
Learning Proficy Portal is not difficult. To complete most operations, you point and click
or drag and drop with your mouse. You never need to write a script, even for complex
operations.
Proficy Portal also integrates well into your existing intranet or web site. You can create
links between your web server and Proficy Portal displays, allowing you to create seamless
navigation between the web pages on your site and the analysis displays on the Proficy
Portal server.
You create custom displays with Proficy Portal with a wide range of commonly-used web
and analysis components including: charts, grids, trees, hyperlinks, controls, and various

1
Proficy Portal 3.5

shapes. These items provide a rich environment to render any screen element you require.
All displays reside on the server as soon as you save them. Consequently, you can work on
your analysis displays from anywhere in the world. When you are ready to make a display
available to others, you simply copy it to a pre-defined folder on the server.
Sharing your displays is easy, too, after copying them to the server:
If the recipient has access to Proficy Portal, you can send the URL of your
analysis data.
If the recipient does not have access, you can save the display as a GIF or a JPG.
To find out about the new features in this release, refer to Proficy Portal Important Product
Information.
If you want to start right away, refer to the Quick Start section.

Introduction

What's New in Proficy Real-Time Information

Portal 3.5
Proficy Portal 3.5 builds on the architecture and features of Proficy Portal 3.0 SP1 and
delivers a number of new capabilities. For details on the features, refer to the Proficy
Portal online help. The new features are:
Display Variables
Display Variables allow you to easily manage information that can be used repeatedly in
your display, making information simple to update.
Display variables are user-defined items of data that can be connected to substitution
parameters in display objects. When a variable value is modified, every occurrence of that
variable value is updated across the display.
For more information, see the Display Variables topic in the online help.
Parameterized Data Sources
Proficy Historian now allows you to dynamically update the data sources using the display
variables. This means that when a display variable value is modified, every occurrence of
that variable value is dynamically updated in the parameterized data sources. Using the
Parameterized Data Sources, you can now develop the displays and dynamically change
the source of the data for the displays.
For more information, see the Using Display Variables section in the online help.
Improved Symbol Usage
Symbols are placeholders for values that can be substituted at run time from a symbol file.
Symbols can represent data sources, properties, or parameters. Proficy Portal now allows
you substitute parameters used in a data source by using display variables.
For more information, see the Symbols topic in the online help.
Quick Time Slider
Proficy Portal now provides the ability to move the time window of a component over a
longer period of time. A new Use Time Slider option is available on the Quick Time tab.
Using this slider you can trend the historical or real-time data over a time period by
specifying the component duration and the number of samples to be plotted. By default,
number of samples plotted are 1440.

3
Proficy Portal 3.5

For more information, see the Quick Time topic in the online help.
On-demand Data Source
Proficy Portal now allows you to dynamically load or unload the data sources on demand.
This means that when there are many data sources configured, then you can set the
required data sources to load when a request comes in and unload the data source when the
data source does not receive a request within a configured time.
For more information, see the On Demand Data Source topic in the online help.
Windows Server 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit) and Windows Server 2008 (32-bit
and 64-bit) support
You can run Proficy Portal 3.5 on Windows Server 2003 (32-bit or 64-bit) and Windows
Server 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit) operating systems.
NOTE: Proficy Portal works as a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows operating systems
using WoW64 mode (Windows-on-Windows 64-bit).
For more information, see the System Requirements topic in the online help.
Enhanced Installer
Proficy Portal 3.5 now ships the Apache 2.2.15 (httpd-2.2.15-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi) web
server along with the Proficy Portal application. If the Proficy Portal installation program
does not detect an IIS web server on your system, then Proficy Portal allows you to install
and configure the Apache 2.2.15 (httpd-2.2.15-win32-x86 no_ssl.msi) web server provided
with the Proficy Portal application.
For more information, see the Installing Proficy Portal topic in the online help.
Chart Improvements
Pen Name
Proficy Portal now allows you to edit the pen names. This means that you can now create
more meaningful pen names for the charts. If you want to change the pen name, double-
click the pen and enter the new name.
For more information, see the To create a pen group topic in the online help.
Expression Pen Names
Proficy Portal now displays the data source name as an alias (ID) when you select a data
source in the Expression Builder Data Sources Tab. This ID will appear in the Data Source
drop-down list on the Edit Expression tab. Using the Expression Pen Names, you can now
easily create the logical expression from the data.

4
Introduction

For more information, see the Expression Builder topic in the online help.
Chart Title
Proficy Portal now allows you to show the chart title that is applied to a pen group. When
you load a pen group into a chart in run-time mode, the chart title will be replaced by the
loaded pen group chart title.
For more information, see the To create a pen group topic in the online help.
Name Property
The Name property, which allows you specify the unique identifier for an object, is now
available for all the Proficy Portal objects.
List/Combo Box Improvements
Apply on Refresh
A new check box, Apply on Refresh, is available on the List/Combo box: General Tab that
is used to indicate whether to use the auto select first entry on refresh option.
For more information, see the Combo/List Box General Tab topic in the online help.
Historian Connector Improvements
Timeout Value
Proficy Portal now provides a time-out limit for the Historian connector to read or write
requests. If the connector fails to return data within the time-out limit, the server displays a
Connection Timeout message.
You can also specify the maximum time interval the Historian connector waits for a read
or write request.
New Installation Folders
On new installs, the default installation folder reflects the new Proficy name:
C:\Program Files\Proficy\Proficy Portal\
On a 64-bit Windows Operating System:
The default destination folder on a 64-bit Windows Operating System is C:\Program
Files(x 86)\Proficy\Proficy Portal\ directory.
When you are upgrading Portal 3.0 SP1 or earlier and if you did not remove the Proficy
Portal directory, then Proficy Portal 3.5 installs to the previous install folder (for example,
C:\Program Files\GE Fanuc\Proficy Portal\

5
Proficy Portal 3.5

If you have uninstalled a previous version of Proficy Portal and did not remove the Proficy
Portal directory, ensure you direct the new Portal to the previous install folder (for
example, C:\Program Files\GE Fanuc\Proficy Portal\ ) so that the Portal install program
will find the existing Displays, Pen Groups, Event Groups, and Symbol Files.
For more information, refer to the Upgrading to Proficy Portal 3.5 topic in the online help.
Help Improvements
Proficy Portal 3.5 now provides video tutorials for the Portal 3.5 related features. To view
the video tutorials, you must install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player.

Introduction

Proficy Portal Licensing

Two types of licensing is supported for Proficy Portal 3.5:

M1 hardware keys along with the keydiag utility. M1 keys have been used for
previous versions of Proficy Portal. Refer to Using Existing Licensing for more
information.
- or -
M4 keys along with the M4 License Viewer. For more information, refer to the
Proficy Common Licensing help, which by default can be found at: [C:\Program
Files\Proficy\Proficy Common\M4 Common Licensing.
You can run a Proficy Portal server without a license. When this is done, the server runs
for two hours in Demo mode and five clients can connect to it. After the two-hour period
expires, the Proficy Portal server stops responding to requests and all new login attempts
fail.
The Proficy Portal license allows a predefined number of active simultaneous client
sessions to a Proficy Portal server. For example, if you purchase a 50-session license, you
can have up to 50 active client sessions at the same time.
You can purchase Proficy Portal licenses with the following number of client sessions:

Client sessions Client sessions

2 2

5 5

10 10

25 25

13
Proficy Portal 3.5

50 50

100 100

NOTE: For support of architectures with more than 100 clients, please contact GE
Intelligent Platforms directly.

IMPORTANT: ONLY valid when connecting to iHistorian 1.0 servers each Historian
server has a license for a specific number of client connections. Each Proficy Portal
server uses one of these connections regardless of the number of browser sessions in
progress. Consequently, it is possible to purchase a 50-client Historian license and a 100-
session Proficy Portal license. This configuration leaves 49-client connections for
Historian users and one connection for the Proficy Portal server.

You can quickly determine the maximum number of licenses in the Proficy Portal
Administration application. Launch Proficy Portal and load the Administration
Application. Select Settings & Diagnostics and click on Key Licensing in the tree. You
will be presented with the following information:

This field... Describes...

Enterprise if the Enterprise edition is installed. If this field is set to true,

Enterprise edition is installed. If this field is set to false,
Historian edition is installed.

JDBC Driver the number of JDBC driver categories purchased. Refer to JDBC
Categories Drivers for more information.

Key Version the current version of the hardware key.

Licensed Users the amount of user licenses purchased for your installation.

14
Introduction

OPC if the OPC option is enabled.

PI if the PI option is enabled. If the PI option has been purchased,

you will be able to connect to OSI PI data sources.

Read Only if the Proficy Portal server is set to read-only. If it is, your users
will not be able to write data to the server.

Using Existing Licensing

If you are upgrading your Proficy Portal installation, M1 hardware keys have to be
updated. Contact 800-GE INTELLIGENT PLATFORMS or your local sales representative
to assist you with the update. If the key version is lower than 3.5, Proficy Portal will run in
Demo mode only.

Installing the Parallel Port Hardware Key

1. Power off the computer and all peripheral devices before installing the hardware

At this time, GE Intelligent Platforms does not support USB keys connected through an
external USB hub.
1. Insert your USB hardware key in the appropriate port.
2. A message box, similar to the following figure, appears as the hardware key
installs:

3. After the hardware installation and licensing is complete, you may run Proficy
Portal as your license permits.

Upgrading Licensing

If you buy additional options for your existing M1 hardware key, you will receive an email
with an update .ilicense file.
NOTE: Contact your sales representative for information about obtaining the license file.

1. Save the .ilicense file to a directory of your choice.

2. Double-click the .ilicense file. An update utility opens.
3. Click Update Now.
The utility validates your current license. If the validation is successful, the utility
updates the license; if the validation is not successful, the upgrade is halted.

Troubleshooting M1 Hardware Key Installation

If the hardware key does not install properly, Proficy Portal will run in Demo mode.

16
Introduction

First, check to see that your hardware key is firmly attached. Next, uninstall and reinstall
the driver for the hardware key. If this driver has been incorrectly installed, it may behave
unpredictably.
You can also use the KeyDiag utility to find out if the hardware key is installed. Run this
utility and if 'No license available' appears in the License Style box (Licensing Info tab),
your hardware key is either not installed properly or is defective. For more information on
running KeyDiag, see KeyDiag Utility.

17
Proficy Portal 3.5

Troubleshooting the Aladdin HASP USB Key

If the Aladdin HASP USB key does not appear to be working, you can reinstall Proficy
Portal Licensing to recover from the improper install. When the Aladdin HASP key is not
communicating correctly, you will notice that the indicator light at the end of the key is
off.

To reinstall Proficy Portal Licensing, follow these steps:

1. Uninstall both M1 Licensing and Proficy Common Licensing (from the

Add/Remove Programs Windows control panel).
2. Insert the Proficy Portal installation CD in your CD-ROM drive.
3. Browse the CD and open the License folder.
4. In the License folder, run M1Licensing.exe.
5. In the License folder, run ProficyClientInstaller.exe.

Replacing Defective M1 Hardware Keys

A defective hardware key will cause Proficy Portal to run in Demo mode. Be sure to check
the connection before assuming your hardware key is defective.
You can also use the KeyDiag utility to find out if the hardware key is defective. Run this
utility and if `No license available' appears in the License Style box (Licensing Info tab),
your hardware key is either not installed properly or is defective. For more information on
running KeyDiag, see KeyDiag Utility.
GE Intelligent Platforms replaces defective keys as quickly as possible. To obtain a
replacement hardware key:
Call your local GE Intelligent Platforms technical support representative. The
support representative will instruct you to FAX a completed copy of a
Merchandise Return Authorization form. On receipt of the form, GE Intelligent
Platforms can program a new hardware key and send it to you overnight.

20
Introduction

Proficy Portal License Consumption

Proficy Portal provides the ability to run multiple browsers on the same client machine, all
running instances of Proficy Portal. It also provides the ability to run multiple instances of
the Portal client in another application, such as Proficy iFIX. In previous versions of
Proficy Portal, each browser instance and each client instance consumed a license. Proficy
Portal now allows multiple browser or client instances to run while consuming only one
license.
License accounting uses the IP address of the client machine. This allows any number of
clients to run on the same client machine without consuming more than one license. When
logging into or out of Proficy Portal, a list of IP addresses that are connected to the Portal
server is accessed and the number of instances from each is determined. The list contains
one entry per IP address.
License accounting for IP addresses is determined as follows:
On login:
If an entry already exists for the IP address, the instance count is incremented but
no additional license is consumed.
If an entry does not exist for the IP address, it is created, the instance count is set
to 1, and a license is consumed.
On logout:
If the instance count is greater than 1, the instance count is decremented by 1 for
each instance that logs out.
If the instance count is 1, then the entry is removed altogether and the license is
released.

Upgrading to Proficy Portal 3.5

It is recommended that you DO NOT UNINSTALL older versions of the product before
installing Proficy Portal 3.5. Proficy Portal setup will automatically detect the presence of
an older version and will upgrade the files. However, you should back up (make a copy of)
your working directories before running the upgrade.
The following upgrade paths are supported:
Upgrade from Proficy Portal 3.0 SP1 to Proficy Portal 3.5. When you run the
Proficy Portal 3.5 setup, Proficy Portal 3.0 SP1 is automatically uninstalled prior
to 3.5 installation.
Upgrade from Proficy Portal 3.0 to Proficy Portal 3.5. When you run the Proficy
Portal 3.5 setup, Proficy Portal 3.0 is automatically uninstalled prior to 3.5
installation.
Upgrade from Proficy Portal 2.6 SP1 to Proficy Portal 3.5. When you run the
Proficy Portal 3.5 setup, Proficy Portal 2.6 SP1 is automatically uninstalled prior
to 3.5 installation.
IMPORTANT: If you are upgrading from infoAgent version 1.1/ 2.0/2.1, or Proficy Portal
version 2.5 or 2.6, it is recommended that you first upgrade to Proficy Portal 2.6 SP1, and
then upgrade to Proficy Portal 3.5.

The default installation folder will now reflect the new Proficy name. By default, Proficy
Portal 3.5 installs to:
C:\Program Files\Proficy\ProficyPortal\
On a 64-bit Windows Operating System:
The default destination folder on a 64-bit Windows Operating System is C:\Program
Files(x 86)\Proficy\Proficy Portal\ directory.
Proficy Portal work as a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows operating systems using

36
Starting and Configuring

WoW64 mode (Windows-on-Windows 64-bit).

When you are upgrading Portal 3.0 SP1 or earlier and if you did not remove the Proficy
Portal directory, then the Proficy Portal 3.5 installs to the previous install folder (for
example, C:\Program Files\GE Fanuc\Proficy Portal\).

To Upgrade Proficy Portal

NOTE: Before upgrading, it is recommended that you back up (make a copy of) your
working directories.

1. Log onto your web server using an account that has administrator rights.
2. Insert the Proficy Portal CD into your CD-ROM drive. The installation program
automatically starts.
3. Ensure that the Upgrade option is selected.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen and restart the computer when prompted.
5. After restarting your computer, or if you are not prompted to restart, select Start
Proficy Portal Server from the Proficy Portal program group in the Windows
Start menu to start the Proficy Portal server.

Resolving Displays
Resolve displays is a feature that is used to load and save displays automatically. The
feature was originally provided to help infoAgent 1.1 users to bring forward Beta version
displays into the release version. In Proficy Portal 3.5, the function of the resolve displays
wizard is not changed. In general, resolving a display updates the display to work with the
latest build. In contrast, running the upgrade brings forward the user files from an older
version of the product to the current version of the product. For more information on
upgrading, see the Upgrading to Proficy Portal 3.5 section.
1. Ensure that the Proficy Real-Time Information Portal server is running.
2. Start Proficy Portal.

37
Proficy Portal 3.5

3. Close all displays.

4. Click the Configure Display toolbar button to switch to Configure mode.

5. From the Application menu, choose Resolve Displays. The Resolve Display
Wizard appears.
6. Click Next.
7. Click the Browse button, locate the display(s) you want to resolve. Select one or
more displays and click Open.
8. Click Next. The displays are saved in 3.5 format. A status on each resolved
display is shown if any errors are encountered during this process they will be
listed.
9. Click Close.

Upgrading Displays, Pen Groups, Event Groups, and

Symbol Files
Displays, pen groups, event groups, and symbol files from a previous version must go
through a conversion process before they can be used in Proficy Portal 3.5.This conversion
process takes place automatically during the upgrade installation of 3.5, or you can
upgrade these user files manually after 3.5 has been installed. During the installation
upgrade, all displays, pen groups, event groups, and symbol files that exist in the previous
version's directory will be converted. If, however, you have displays that are on another
server or in a different directory, these can be upgraded at any time using the Upgrade
Wizard utility.
NOTE: If you are upgrading from version 1.x, you must first upgrade your displays, pen
groups, event groups, and symbol files to version 2.1, and then upgrade again to 3.5. This
means running two different Upgrade Wizard utilities in sequence.

To run the Upgrade Wizard utility

1. Double-click the UpgradeApp.cmd file, located in one of the following

directories:
Upgrade from 1.x: YourInstallDir\webapps\infoAgentSrv\Upgrade

38
Starting and Configuring

(where YourInstallDir is the location that you have chosen to install

Proficy Portal, for example: C:\Program Files\Proficy\Proficy Portal).
Upgrade from 2.x: YourInstallDir\webapps\infoAgentSrv\Upgrade2
(where YourInstallDir is the location that you have chosen to install
Proficy Portal, for example: C:\Program Files\Proficy\Proficy Portal).
The following Upgrade Wizard appears:

There is a separate step in the wizard for displays, pen groups, event groups, and
symbols. You can choose to upgrade one or any combination of these files. For
example, you can upgrade displays and symbols only. If you are upgrading from
version 1.x, the first Upgrade Wizard utility will not have the symbols upgrade
option.
2. For each step, click the Browse button to locate the files, select the files you want
upgraded, and click either the Next or Upgrade button. If you click the Next
button, it means you want to go on to the next step to do further upgrading. If you
choose Upgrade, the remaining steps are skipped and the upgrade is performed.
NOTE: If you have images in your displays, the Upgrade Wizard utility will

39
Proficy Portal 3.5

retrieve and upgrade the images along with the displays.

When the upgrade has completed, the Upgrade Results window appears. On the
Upgrade Results window, you will see the results of the conversion process. If
there were problems, you will be prompted to look at the UpgradeError.log file.
This file is located at: YourInstallDir\webapps\infoAgentSrv\Upgrade (where
YourInstallDir is the location that you have chosen to install Proficy Portal, for
example: C:\Program Files\Proficy\Proficy Portal).
3. Click the Close button to exit the Upgrade Wizard utility.
When you select displays, pen groups, event groups, or symbol files to be upgraded, if the
directory structure they are selected from matches your Proficy Portal 3.5 directory, the
files are copied to the same location in the Proficy Portal 3.5 directory. If the directory
structure of the display, pen group, or event group files does not match the directory
structure of your Proficy Portal installation, the files are copied into the following
directories:
YourInstallDir\webapps\infoAgentSrv\AllUsers\displays
YourInstallDir\webapps\infoAgentSrv\AllUsers\pengroups
YourInstallDir\webapps\infoAgentSrv\AllUsers\eventgroups
YourInstallDir\webapps\infoAgentSrv\AllUsers\symbols
If you are upgrading a display that has the same name as an existing 3.5 display, the
existing 3.5 display is overwritten by the previous version's display; however, a copy of
the current 3.5 display is placed in the Upgrade\backup directory.

Named Times in Upgraded Displays

Named times define the relative time and time range values used in various Proficy Portal
components. Your 1.1 displays may use named times that do not exist in Proficy Portal
3.5. For example, in a previous version, you may have configured a named time called
'End of Afternoon Shift'. If this relative time value 'End of Afternoon Shift' has not been
defined in Proficy Portal 3.5, then when you upgrade the display, the value is added to the
Proficy Portal 3.5 named times. Relative start and end hint times that are used in event
groups are added as named times in the same way.
When a new named time is added to Proficy Portal 3.5 during the upgrade process, the
named time is created with the display name appended to it. For example, a named time
'Time1' in a display called 'PlantOverview' will be named 'PlantOverviewTime1' in Proficy

40
Starting and Configuring

Portal 3.5. If the name already exists in 3.5, it will be overwritten. Before the existing
named time is overwritten, the RelativeTimes.xml file is copied to
\Upgrade\backup1.1\maps\time.
For more information on named times, see Named Times the Named Times topic in the
online help (type 'Named Times' in the online help Search).

Uninstalling Proficy Portal

To uninstall Proficy Portal, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon in the

Windows Control Panel and locate Proficy Portal in the installed programs list. When
uninstalling Proficy Portal, the Proficy Portal directory is not removed. This is done to
preserve files that reside on the Proficy Portal server. If you want to do a clean install,
rename the old Proficy Portal directory so that old files are not modified, deleted, or
overwritten.

Resolving Port Conflicts

If you run both IIS (Internet Information Services) and Apache on the same machine, there
is the potential for a port conflict to occur. In a typical case, IIS and Apache both run on
port 80 by default. To resolve this problem:
Do not run both IIS and Apache on the same machine. If IIS is not being used,
uninstall it. Also, in some cases you may be able to switch the application server
to IIS or Apache and uninstall the one that is no longer being used.
or
Switch the default website port in IIS to something other than port 80. The
procedure to change the port will differ slightly depending on the version of IIS
you run. Generally, the port number is found on the Properties page of the web
server's default website (right-click Default Web Site and choose Properties). In
the TCP Port box, change the number to something else (e.g. 90).
NOTE: Changing this port may cause connectivity issues on networks that use routers and
firewalls. The URL http://myserver/ProficyPortal will no longer work. Use the following
URL instead: http://myserver:##/ProficyPortal (where ## is the assigned port).

Hosting Proficy Portal on Apache

You can run Proficy Real-Time Information Portal on either an IIS web server, or an
Apache web server. Proficy Portal 3.5 ships the Apache 2.2.15 (httpd-2.2.15-win32-x86-
no_ssl.msi) web server along with the Proficy Portal application. If the Proficy Portal
installation program does not detect an IIS web server on your system, then Proficy Portal
prompts you to install and configure the Apache 2.2.15 (httpd-2.2.15-win32-x86
no_ssl.msi) web server provided with the Proficy Portal application.
Alternatively, if you have any problems configuring the Apache 2.2.15 web server, then
you can run the ConfigureApacheHTTPServer.bat batch file at the end of the Portal
product installation. The .bat file can be found in the Proficy Portal install directory at:
<InstallDir>\Proficy\Proficy Portal\webapps\infoAgentSrv\.
NOTE: The minimum required version of Apache is 2.2.15. If you have any other version
of Apache Web Server installed, you must remove it before installing Proficy Portal 3.5.

IMPORTANT: It is not recommended to use any other Apache versions other than 2.2.15
(httpd-2.2.15-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi).

In some cases if you want to use any other version of Apache other than 2.2.15 (httpd-
2.2.15-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi), then you have the option to install and configure other
versions of Apache. For more information about installing and configuring other versions
of Apache, refer to Configuring Proficy Portal on Apache section.

Configuring the Proficy Portal Server

After you install Proficy Portal, restart your computer. By restarting the Proficy Portal
server, you ensure the Java servlet engine starts correctly.
NOTE: You can also start the Java servlet engine manually after you install Proficy
Portal. To start the servlet engine, select Start Proficy Portal Server from the Proficy
Portal program group.

When the servlet engine is running, configure the Proficy Portal server by launching the
Proficy Portal client (Windows Start menu | All Programs | Proficy Portal 3.5 | Start
Proficy Real-Time Information Portal Server). When you select this menu item, the
browser launches, loads a web page, and runs the Java plug-in.
To simplify the setup and configuration of the Java plug-in, when you install Proficy
Portal on the server computer, you are asked if you want the Java plugin runtime to install
automatically if the Java run-time plug-in v6.0 update 22 is not found. If installing third-
party software conflicts with your company's policy, you can choose not to have the plugin
install automatically, but rather display a message of your own directing the users where to
the get the proper Java plugin runtime. Refer to Installing the Java Plug-in the Installing
the Java Plug-in section for more information.

Configuring the Proficy Portal Client

To start a Proficy Portal client, start your web browser and enter the URL:
http://<servername>/ProficyPortal, where <servername> is the address of your Proficy
Portal server. If you are unsure of the server name contact your system administrator.
NOTE: If SSL (security) is being used, you can enter "https" rather than "http" in the
URL. Contact your system administrator if you do not know which protocol to use.

When you install Proficy Portal on the server computer, you are asked if you want the Java
plugin runtime to install automatically if the Java run-time plug-in v6.0 update 22 is not
found. If installing third-party software conflicts with your company's policy, you can
choose not to have the plugin install automatically, but rather display a message of your
own directing the users where to the get the proper Java plugin runtime. The Java plug-in
is required on the client computer in order to view analysis displays. Refer to Installing the
Java Plug-in the Installing the Java Plug-in section for more information.
After the plug-in is installed, Proficy Portal prompts you for permission to run a Java
applet. This applet provides access to all Proficy Portal analysis displays. Select the Yes or
Always button in response to the prompt:
More Details displays information about the applet and its provider.
Yes grants access to the applet for this browser session only. The next time the
applet runs it will prompt you again.
No denies access to the applet and closes Proficy Portal.
Always grants access to the applet and does not prompt you again for
permission to run the Java applet.
After you respond to the applet prompt, Proficy Portal prompts you to log in. You can log
in by entering a login name, a password, and domain name/workgroup. See Logging into
Proficy Portal the Logging into Proficy Portal section for more information. If security is
disabled, you can enter any login name to start using Proficy Portal.
If Proficy Portal security is disabled, make sure you always use the same login name. This
ensures your analysis displays will always be saved to the same location in the system tree.
By default, Proficy Portal saves all your work in a folder that matches your login name.
Consequently, if you log in as jsmith, JohnSmith, and JohnS, you could have displays

53
Proficy Portal 3.5

saved in three different folders.

If security is enabled, Proficy Portal will use Windows security to authenticate users.
Before you can log into Proficy Portal, your system administrator must create the
necessary user and group accounts. Typically, your Proficy Portal login name, password,
and domain name/workgroup will match the text you enter to log into your local computer.
If it does not, consult your system administrator for the exact login information required.
Once you log in, the run-time environment starts and you are ready to analyze and
visualize data. For more information about accessing and analyzing displays in the run-
time environment, refer to Display Management in Run-time the Running Proficy Portal
section in the online help (open the 'Running Proficy Portal' book from the online help

</init-param>
NOTE: If you want to configure RMI as a connection method, then set the param-
value to "true".
4. Save and close the web.xml file.
5. Restart the Proficy Portal Server.
Proficy Portal now uses HTTP as a connection method to connect to the Proficy
Portal Server.
Note:

Portal 3.5 uses RMI as the default connection method. If RMI connection fails,
then you must manually configure HTTP as a connection method.

Connection method with https protocol:

If you want to use https, you must purchase a server certificate and install it within IIS. To
make https as the default, it is recommended that IIS be configured to require secure
communications (SSL protocol).

IMPORTANT: It is recommended that you purchase a server certificate and install it within IIS or
Apache and use HTTPS as your communication protocol.

<, >.

3. Click Login.
NOTE: If you receive a message that states `You are not authorized to view this page', and
you are connecting to the Internet via a local area network (LAN), make sure your web
browser is set to bypass the proxy server for local addresses. See your browser's online
help documentation for more information.

NOTE: If you are prompted to log into Proficy Portal twice (and the second time you are
granted access), check that the server's computer name does not contain any special
characters. Special characters include any characters other than a-z, 0-9, and hyphen. If
the host computer name does contain special characters, change the name to valid
characters. However, be aware that renaming the host computer name can cause some
applications to stop working. For example, if you run an SQL server on a machine and
change its name, you may have to re-run the SQL setup from the installation CD.

What you can do in Proficy Portal depends on your security settings. For example, you
may have permissions to access the run-time environment only. If you need to make
changes to a display, you must have access to the configuration environment. For more

Frequently Asked Questions
The following will provide answers to common questions and problems:
Why does Proficy Portal time out?
How does security work?
Why do my displays run slower after converting from v1.1?
How do I access the Proficy Portal release notes?
How to I run Proficy Portal through a firewall?

Why does Proficy Portal time out?

If you do not have a Proficy Portal hardware key, you can run the product in Demo mode,
which will cease operation after two hours. To run the Proficy Portal server for more than
two hours, you need to purchase a hardware key. Refer to Proficy Portal Licensing and
The Hardware Key the Proficy Portal Licensing and The Hardware Key sections.
If you do have a key but it is not recognized, the Proficy Portal server starts in Demo mode
as well. Contact GE Intelligent Platforms Technical Support (see the Technical Support
section) if your key is not recognized.

How does security work?

Proficy Portal security uses the concept of roles to manage security. Through the use of
roles, you can assign users different levels of access to various Proficy Portal features.
For example, you can create two roles: Supervisors and Operators. To the Supervisors role,
you can assign rights to both the configuration environment and the run-time environment;
to the Operators role, you can assign rights to only the run-time environment. When a user
connects to the Proficy Portal server, and has been given Operators rights, the user will
only be able to view displays. If the user has been given Supervisors rights, they will be
able to configure those displays as well.
You can configure multiple roles and have different privileges assigned to each role.

69
Proficy Portal 3.5

Privileges restrict access to environments, applications, specific tasks, and specific

displays. You can also assign privileges to individual users.
For more information, refer to Securing Proficy Portal the Securing Proficy Portal online
help topic (type 'security' in the online help's Index feature).

How do I access the Proficy Portal release notes?
