Today I attended the Friday morning family drop in
program. This program is for parents/caregivers and
children newborn-6 years old and runs from 9:15am-
12:00pm. In the program the activities include creative
art and sensory activities. The center is set up with toys
for free play as well as books for reading. The program
starts and ends with circle time.
Objectives:
1. To give the children the opportunity to engage in
new activities/toys that they may not have access
to at home.
2. To allow the children to interact with other
children to build their social skills.
3. For the parents to converse with other families
4. For parents to have the opportunity to ask the
professionals any questions they may have
regarding their child(ren).
5. To give the family a chance to get out of the house
and experience a chance of scenery.
Description:
1. We had the room set up with a creative and
sensory activity. The space had a wide variety of
toys due to the wide variety or children that attend
this program. There were toys age appropriate for
age zero to six.
2. The creative activity was open art with a wide
variety of art materials to manipulate.
3. The sensory activities were play dough with
scissors and cookie cutters.
4. The the sensory bin, there was corn and seeds
with scoops ands shovels.
5. Around the room as well as at the door, there are
may resources for the parents such as flyers,
pamphlets etc.
6. The educators are present as well as other
professionals to answer the parents
question/concerns.

Signature:
The drop in went very well. Although it was very busy, it
was surprisingly quiet. I expected it to be noisy and
chaotic since it was a cold day. I expected children to
have a bunch of built up energy to release, but this was
not the case. During the drop in time frame, the parents
were all very engaged with their children. This was great
to see. The purpose of these programs is to give the
opportunity for parents to interact with their kids using a
wide variety of materials and toys that they may not use
at home. It was good to see that the program was being
used for its purpose. The sensory bin was a huge hit.
Although it was a mess, it was constantly busy and there
was a clear interest in the materials. The children used
scoops and cups to measure, fill and dump. They were
evidently exploring and investigating at this station.
Overall, the drop in was great success. It will be
interesting to see if the march break drop ins differ. Since
it is possible that the age group may change due to
children being out of school, it will be fascinating to see
if this causes any alterations in how the drop in functions.
