As per Company Secretaries Regulations, 1982 (amended the significance and methodology of training, business
from time-to-time) every student apart from passing the final environment, corporate culture, communication and
examination of the Institute is also required to possess the behavioural aspects. Keeping in view the above factors, the
practical experience and undergo practical training or be Council of the Institute has decided that students requiring to
exempted therefrom before becoming eligible to the Associate undergo training should compulsorily attend five days Training
Membership of the Institute. Students who do not possess Orientation Programme (TOP) before they are sponsored for
practical experience are required to undergo compulsorily 15 training. It has also been decided that henceforth students
months Management/Apprenticeship training. will be sponsored for training in the companies or with company
Most of the students commencing training are not aware of secretaries in practice as per the following schedule.
Dear students,
Every person wishes to succeed in whatever he or she is doing. But not everybody achieves
this goal. Some succeed; others do not. One is satisfied; another one is not. The failure and
success are two sides of the same coin. Those who take failure as a learning experience, success
touches their feet and they achieve the desired goal. On the contrary those who feel saddened
and get dejected, tension builds up in their mind resulting in frustration and loss of interest in the work. Sometimes people end up
with fighting or starting a quarrel with someone especially with their families, or even with their children, friends and others. Such
situations can be overcome if we take our failure in a positive spirit. Instead of feeling dejected, we should make our will firm and
try to achieve the goal. We should develop firm will power and have audacity to face any type of situation boldly. George Allen
says: People of mediocre ability sometimes achieve outstanding success because they dont know when to quit. Most men
succeed because they are determined to.
Determination comes from a strong faith in oneself. The one who does not garner any self-doubts or negative complexes is
able to stand up to steep challenges. He is able to muster the courage and confidence to climb the ladder of success, which may
even, be shaky at times. He refuses to be overwhelmed by both praise and criticism. With equanimity and poise, being humble
to all and to circumstances, with dignified acceptance he treads the path with open and receptive mind. Such a mind is strong,
nimble, subtle and beautiful. Out of such a mind comes the sweet nectar of success. Cultivate therefore, your mind with love and
softness. Look to yourself with utmost honesty, but with strength and will power remove all doubts and negative thoughts. You will
surely then discover that you have the power to achieve infinite happiness and success.
Will power is one of the corner stones of success. There is an old Chinese proverb which says: Great souls have wills; feeble
ones have only wishes. Will power is what propels ideas into reality. It is the ability to control unnecessary and harmful impulses,
to overcome laziness and procrastination, and to arrive to a decision and follow it with perseverance until its successful
accomplishment. It is the inner power that overcomes the desire to indulge in unnecessary and useless habits, and the inner
strength that overcomes inner emotional and mental resistance for taking action.
Everyone possesses some habits or addictions they wish they could overcome, such as smoking, excessive eating, laziness,
procrastination or lack of assertiveness. To overcome these habits or addictions, one needs to have will power and self discipline.
They make a great difference in everyones life, and bring inner strength, self-mastery and decisiveness. Just think what you will
achieve when you rapidly increase your will power and direct the force of your will into achieving your goals. How many times
have you told yourself, I wish I had will power and self discipline? How many times have you started to do something and quit
after a short while? In fact, we all have had experiences like these.
Will power and self-discipline help us to choose our behavior and reactions. The development of will power and self-discipline
will certainly improve your life and give you more control. Think the strength of your will as a laser like beam of intentional focus.
All great plans and projects begin within the imagination but it is the strength of your will that brings them to fruition.
Friends, the Council has approved the new syllabus for the Company Secretaryship course keeping in view the future demands
on the knowledge and skills of Company Secretaries. The parameters kept in mind while devising the new syllabus include
changing global environment and expectations of business, industry and regulators; emerging cross border business activities of
corporate India, requirements of industry sector/segment specific knowledge and skills and resultant emerging opportunities for
Company Secretaries. The basic purpose of new syllabus is to equip prospective Company Secretary to provide value added
business solutions to trade and industry and to render efficient services to all stakeholders, to enable corporates to achieve
inclusive growth. The course contents have accordingly been rationalized to remain contemporary in fast changing corporate

dynamics. As pillars of smooth corporate functioning Company Secretaries need to be in control of finance and treasury functions.
In order to give you this expertise the new syllabus also emphasizes basic and advanced aspects of finance. It is to ensure the
true complementarity that the stages of Company Secretaryship course have been rechristened as Foundation Programme;
Executive Programme; and Professional Programme. The Institute proposes to commence registration for the Foundation
Programme towards the end of this year, while that for the Executive Programme around the beginning of 2008.
That apart, the Council has approved a new training template for the Secretarial Modular Training Programme that all students
who have passed the final examination of the Company Secretaryship course undergo after completing the practical training. The
new training module emphasizes soft skills like communication skills, leadership skills, effective listening, and negotiation skills,
among other exposures to corporate functioning that are provided to the candidates. The new module will be first implemented
on experimental basis in the residential SMTP at ICSI Center for Corporate Research and Training. Gaining from the experience
at ICSI-CCRT, the new module will be implemented as a standard SMTP module. It is expected that the new module will provide
the necessary impetus to the professional skills of Company Secretaries to meet the challenges of dynamic corporate sector of
tomorrow.
As part of Institutes efforts to develop synergies by collaborating with management institutes, universities and professional
bodies, the ICSICCRT has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Symbiosis International University. Under this
MOU Company Secretaries will be able to avail of international class training in soft skills, communication skills, leadership skills
and other interactive skills. The ICSI will provide training programmes in corporate laws and corporate governance to the
students of the Symbiosis International University.
Friends, I am confident that many of you must have ensured your registration for the National Convention. As you are aware,
the 35th National Convention of Company Secretaries is being held on the theme Excellence Through Business Value Addition
on September 20-22, 2007 at B M Birla Auditorium, Jaipur.
As already informed, the Institute has decided to award Academic Development Programme (ADP) Certificate to the students
attending National Convention. Hence such students would be exempt from attending compulsory ADP and would be deemed to
have complied with the requirement of attending 25 hours of Academic Development Programmes. The students attending the
National Convention will also get concession in the payment of delegate fee.
Before I conclude, I would like to congratulate those of you who have been declared successful in June 2007 examinations the
results of which were declared on 25th of August 2007. I equally feel concerned for those of you who have not been able to get
through the examinations this time. I urge them not to feel discouraged as success or failure is common in a professional
examination. Instead, reactivate yourself, think positively, set your goal, make a determined effort towards achieving the desired
goal and be a winner.
Napoleon Hill has said: "Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to cut all sources of retreat. Only by doing
so can one be sure of maintaining that state of mind known as a burning desire to win - essential to success".
Yours sincerely,
