Lodi Apple Lodi is an older variety that was introduced to replace Yellow ALL
ROOTS
Transparent, which it resembles somewhat in appearance and

season. It is a good early season apple for pies and sauces,
but as a dessert apple it tends to be very tart and has been
known to have given many a young boy a "belly ache" when
picked too early. It is a better keeper than Yellow Transparent
and is more firm. ZONE 4-8

Quinte Apple Quinte is one of the earliest quality summer apples to eat. ALL
ROOTS
The fruit is crisp, juicy and tasty with a red blush over a yellow
G
skin. It doesn't store well, but does harvest over a longer
period and require several pickings. The tree is vigorous and
very hardy. Ripens in July near Lodi and Yellow Transparent.

Red Astrachan Red Astrachan is a small to medium sized apple with a pale ALL
ROOTS
Apple creamy skin striped with red and covered with a heavy bloom.

The white flesh is sometimes striped with red and is excellent
for eating. It is tart and an excellent cooking, sauce and pie
apple. Does not store long. The tree is productive but can be
biennial. Ripens very early in July and through to September.

Yellow Yellow Transparent is just about the earliest summer apple. It ALL

Transparent is medium-large with translucent pale yellow skin. Some say it

Apple makes the best sauces because of its crisp, very sweet juicy,
white flesh that is very light in texture. It is also wonderful in
pies. Trees are upright, vigorous growers that bear fruit very

Beacon Apple Beacon is an excellent early summer apple with juicy, mild ALL
ROOTS
sub-acid flesh. It is good for fresh eating and cooking, but

does not store well. The fruit is medium to large size and
ripens over a relatively long period in August. The tree is very
hardy, reportedly to -50 degrees. The apple is orangish-red
striped over a yellow background. The tree is vigorous,
productive and heavy bearing. ZONE 2-6

Benoni Apple Benoni is a late summer apple that is a fine dessert apple. It ALL
ROOTS
is highly flavored, with a mild sub-acid flavor. The fruit is

medium sized, Deep red striped over an orangish-yellow skin.
It is a good bearer, but can be biennial. Ripens in July to
August. ZONE 4-7 AVAILABLE FALL 2012.

Carroll Apple Carroll is a very hardy apple that ripens early in the summer ALL
ROOTS
season. It is a somewhat dwarfish tree but produces well. It

is an excellent dessert apple and also a good cooking apple.

Grandpa's Grandpa's SummerGold is one of the best early summer ALL
ROOTS
SummerGold apples around. Slightly later picking than Lodi, which it

Apple closely resembles. The large fruit ripens early in August. The
flesh is white and the skin yellow-green and smooth. It has
excellent tart flavor early on, but as it hangs on the tree it gets
sweeter and the flavor improves. For a summer apple it
stores quite well and hangs on the trees for several weeks.

JerseyMac Apple JerseyMac apple is a very early McIntosh type apple that ALL

ripens in early summer in late July. It is an attractive, medium

sized apple with predominantly red skin over a light yellow
background. The flesh is whitish-yellow, crisp, juicy, and has
a tasty, aromatic flavor similar to McIntosh. It is an early
bloomer. Keeps fairly well for such an early, summer apple.

Norland Apple Norland is another good hardy apple variety for the far north. ALL
ROOTS
Its medium size red fruit are good for both cooking and eating.

It ripens in mid-August, but is a good keeper in cold storage,

Oriole Apple Oriole is a very hardy, early summer apple with excellent ALL

eating and cooking qualities. The fruit is large, red striped

and resembles Duchess. Very hardy, vigorous, and extremely
productive. Moderately susceptible to fire blight and scab.

Pristine Apple Grandpa's Nature Friendly Pristine is one of the best early ALL

disease resistant varieties for the garden. It is a very early

ripening yellow apple that resembles Yellow Transparent in
appearance, but is much firmer, less acid, and better eating.
The fruit is yellow, very smooth, and attractive. It keeps well
on and off the tree for several weeks. The fruit is tasty and
quite firm and crisp for being so early. It ripens early in
August, just after Lodi. ZONE 5-8

Williams Pride William's Pride is a very early summer season, disease ALL
ROOTS
Apple resistant apple. It is one of the earliest dark red apples,

ripening just after Lodi or Pristine. It is yellow fleshed with a

Akane Apple Akane is a late summer to early fall apple that resembles ALL

Blaze Apple Blaze is an earlier Jonathan-type apple that ripens about 3-4 ALL

bright yellow background, attractive and smooth. The flesh is
yellow, crisp, firm, juicy and good quality. It has a flavor
somewhat like Jonathan but less tart. Vigorous and

rust, but moderately resistant to fire blight and powdery

Centennial Centennial Crab is a very hardy, edible crab that can beautify ALL

crisp, juicy edible crabs that are sweet and nutty flavored G

about 1.5 inches in diameter. It ripens in mid-August and is
an excellent pollinizer for other apples, bearing heavy loads of
red flower buds that open into white blossoms. Good for

Chenango Chenango Strawberry is one of the most beautiful summer ALL


Strawberry Apple apples, with medium to large, conical, shiny, yellowish- ROOTS
whitish, smooth skinned apples. The skin is almost G
translucent. The fruit is firm, juicy and white, but tender and
very aromatic. Pick when the skin stars to turn milky. It picks
over a long period of several weeks, but overripe fruit will get
dry and mealy. Good for eating and sauce. The tree is very
hardy, but very susceptible to fire blight. ZONE 4-9

Dolgo Edible Dolgo Crab apple is one of the earliest to bloom in the spring ALL

also an excellent ornamental variety! It ripens in late August

Duchess Apple Duchess is a very old heritage variety that is still a treat in the ALL
early summer. It is a good cooking apple, but just ordinary for ROOTS
fresh eating. Duchess is a medium to large, greenish yellow D
apple with bright red striping and splashes. It has gusseted
dots that are distinctive. The flesh is white, fine, firm and
juicy. It is not a long term keeper, but is a good seasonal
apple ripening in mid-August. ZONE 4-8

Ginger Gold Ginger Gold is an early golden-type apple that ripens in the ALL
Apple summer, late in August to early September. It very much ROOTS
resembles a Golden Delicious, but has a more spicy flavor D
than Golden. The fruit is medium-large and firm and crisp. It
is probably the best golden-type apple in this early season.
ZONE 5-8
Goodland Apple Goodland is one of the most hardy apples known. It has been ALL
known to withstand -50F with little winter damage. The fruit is ROOTS
medium size, round, bi-color fruit. Its flesh is tender, crisp, D
juicy and aromatic. It makes a delicious aromatic apple sauce
and is well suited for fresh eating. It ripens in early
September. ZONE 2-5
Irish Peach Irish Peach is an ancient apple that came from Ireland. It has ALL
Apple smallish, greenish fruit with faint red stripes. The flesh is ROOTS
crisp, juicy, aromatic, and has a pleasant rich flavor. Ripens G
in mid-summer. ZONE 3-7
Maiden Blush Maiden Blush is a fine heirloom summer apple that produces ALL
Apple regular crops of flattish round yellow apples with a beautiful ROOTS
crimson blush. The skins are tough, smooth and waxy and G
the flesh is crisp, juicy and creamy yellow. It is great for
cooking, eating fresh, drying and making cider. It ripens in
mid-August to early September over a prolonged period. It is
very hardy. ZONE 2-8

Molly's Delicious Molly's Delicious is not a true Red Delicious, but is very ALL
Apple similar in appearance and flavor. It ripens almost three or ROOTS
more weeks ahead of Gala and McIntosh. It is large and G
conic with about one half red blush over a yellow background.
It has a very pleasing flavor and will keep quite well for
several weeks. ZONE 6-8
Oldenberg or Oldenburg is likely the same variety as Duchess that we also ALL
Duchess Apple carry. We have not yet been able to compare the two ROOTS
cultivars side-by-side. ZONE 4-8 G

Red Summer Red Summer Rambo is a "double red" strain of regular ALL
Rambo Apple Summer Rambo. It has all the same qualities. The large fruit ROOTS
is red striped. The flesh is very crisp, juicy, yellowish green, G
with a fine, rich, tart, aromatic flavor. Its great for eating and
sauce. The tree is very vigorous, hardy and productive. It
ripens earlier in the season in August to September. ZONE 4-

Redfree Apple Grandpa's Nature Friendly Redfree is an excellent tasting, ALL
summer apple with a lot of disease resistance. It is a good ROOTS
choice for the backyard orchard where you don't want to have C
to spray a lot. The fruit is medium sized, red, with some
striping with sweet, tasty, white flesh. Ripens mid to late in
the summer after Pristine(R) ZONE 5-8

Sansa Apple Sansa in a high quality dessert apple that ripens a week or so ALL
ahead of Gala. The bright red fruit is medium sized, with firm, ROOTS
white flesh and an excellent sweet, juicy, distinct flavor. It D
keeps well for an early apple. ZONE 6-8

State Fair Apple State Fair is a very high quality late summer apple ripening in ALL
mid-late August. The medium sized fruit is brilliantly striped ROOTS
orangish-red over a yellowish background color. It has a G
creamy flesh that is juicy, sweet, firm and aromatic with a
moderately subacid flavor. It is predominantly used for fresh
eating and will keep rather well for an earlier season apple.

SummerMac SummerMac is an early summer apple ripening in late August ALL


Apple and a few weeks before regular McIntosh. The fruit is ROOTS
medium to large and has the appearance of a McIntosh, D
although not as aromatic and tasty as a regular Mac. The fruit
will keep fairly well. It is a nicely colored red apple. Good for
fresh eating, cooking, and sauce. ZONE 5-7

Valstar brand Valstar is an improved red strain of Elstar, which is popular ALL
Elstar Apple in Europe. The fruit ripens late in the summer and has ROOTS
excellent sweet-tart flavor. It is medium sized and keeps well. D
The fruit is mostly red striped over a golden background color.

Wealthy Apple Grandpa's Choice Red Wealthy is an old-time favorite in ALL
many cold climates, because it is so hardy. It ripens late in ROOTS
the summer and is an excellent all purpose apple. The fruit is A
a deep red over a pale yellow background, and the flesh is
crisp, juicy, and white with some pink veining. It has a distinct
flavor with a hint of strawberry. It is a favorite old time apple
in many orchards. ZONE 3-8

Whitney Edible Whitney is a good quality edible crabapple that is fine for jelly ALL
Crab Apple or pickling. Medium size crabapples with red stripes over a ROOTS
yellow background. It picks late in August to early D

Zestar! Apple Grandpa's Choice Zestar! is a rather new variety that is ALL
gaining in excitement. It is an early season apple with ROOTS
excellent, dessert quality. It is very crisp and juicy with an D
above average sweet/tart flavor. This apple is 60-85% red on
a yellow background. It will store quite well for several weeks
after being picked in late August in the Midwest. ZONE 3-7

Blondee Apple Blondee Apple is a very new "golden Gala" type apple that ALL
Grandpa saw a few years ago and was impressed with. The ROOTS
fruit ripens a few days before regular Gala but has a greenish- D
yellow skin that changes to a rich yellow as it ripens. The fruit
is exceptional and has great eating qualities like Gala. It
appears to be denser than Gala and will keep for several
months. The tree is similar to Gala is other respects. ZONE
5-8

Chestnut Edible Chestnut is a large, russeted, sweet and juicy edible ALL
Crab Apple crabapple with a rich, nutty like flavor that can be used for ROOTS
eating, sauce, preserves, and decorative purposes. It ripens D
late summer, early September. ZONE 4-8
Cortland Apple Cortland is an old-time heritage apple that Grandpa grew up ALL
with. Cortland is large, and round and similar in looks to ROOTS
McIntosh, but its flavor is very distinct. It is fairly crisp and D
juicy, but is not a "hard" apple--- easy on the teeth. The tree
is more hardy than most, making it an excellent choice for
colder areas. ZONE 4-8

Gala Apple The original Gala strain to come into the US is known as ALL
(Original strain) Kidd's D-8 now. It produces medium sized fruit with striping ROOTS
on a golden yellow-orangish skin that is distinctive. The fruit C
is crisp, dense, aromatic and white with an subacid, sweet-tart
flavor that keeps you coming back for more. Gala is now one
of the most popular apples in the world. Ripens in early to
mid-September and it stores well. Very productive and should
be thinned early for good size. ZONE 4-9

Golden Delicious- Grandpa's Early Golden Delicious is a strain of regular Golden ALL
Early Strain Delicious that ripens a couple weeks ahead of normal. ROOTS
Grandpa's strain is more russet resistant than the original D

Golden Delicious, but has all the same qualities--- large,
sweet, juicy golden yellow fruit. It is a favorite for pies, sauce,
cooking, juice and all purposes. Stores well. Harvests early
in September. ZONE 5-8
Grandpa's Big Grandpa's Big Gala is a special selection of Gala that just ALL
Gala Apple grows larger than a normal Gala. The fruit is similar in other ROOTS
respects. Not highly colored, but an excellent eating and all C
purpose apple. It is suspected to be a tri-ploid, so it requires
pollination from other varieties than Gala and Golden
Delicious. ZONE 5-8
Grandpa's Early Grandpa's Early Red Rezista is an attractive dark red ALL
Red Rezista colored apple. The fruit is crisp, sweet and very juicy with an ROOTS
good flavor. Picks in early mid-season, in mid-September. E

There is some similarity in appearance to a Jonathan, but
quality and size is not as good. Very scab resistant.ZONE 5-8

Grandpa's Gala- Grandpa's Gala-like Rezista is a striking dark red apple with ALL
like Rezista subdued stripes. The medium size fruit is very juicy and ROOTS
medium firm with very good dessert qualities. It has an E

appearance and flavor that is very similar to Gala. It picks
mid-season in mid- to late September. It hangs and keeps
well on the tree and will store for several weeks. Very scab
resistant. ZONE 5-8
Honeycrisp Grandpa's Choice Honeycrisp is the current "star" of the apple ALL
Apple industry and with consumers. It is "explosively crisp" with an ROOTS
unbeatable sweet, juicy flavor. It is naturally large and will D
color well in cooler climates. Color can range from brilliant
red with some striping to mostly red-striped over a straw
yellow background color when ready to pick. Very hardy and
productive. Keeps well when picked in peak condition. If you
like crisp and juicy apples, this one is unbeatable. Harvest
early in fall in mid-September. ZONE 4-8

Idajon Apple Idajon is a Jonathan-type apple that ripens about 10 days ALL
ahead of regular Jonathan. The fruit is medium-large, round, ROOTS
firm and crisp. It is carmine red, smooth, and fine grained. It G
is somewhat sweet and sub-acid. The tree is productive.
ZONE 4-7
Initial Apple Initial is a new disease resistant, earlier season apple that is ALL
scab resistant. It is a large apple with lots of red blush over ROOTS
yellow background. The fruit is crisp and mildly acid. It E
matures about a week before Gala. ZONE 5-8

Jonamac Apple Jonamac is an excellent dessert quality apple ripening about a ALL
week before McIntosh, which is one of its parents. The fruit is ROOTS
very similar in appearance to Mac, but is more highly colored D
and firmer. Eating quality is superior to Mac. The fruit is only
medium sized and will soften in storage. ZONE 3-7

Northern Lights Northern Lights produces large, attractive, glossy, bright red ALL
Apple blushed apples. It has a flavor similar to McIntosh and with ROOTS
semi-firm, tasty white flesh.. It is very cold hardy and best G
suited to back yard orchards in cold climates. It ripens near
McIntosh season and will keep a few months in cold storage.
It is a good choice for the backyard garden in very cold areas.

NovaMac Apple Novamac is very similar to McIntosh in season and flavor. ALL
The fruit is medium-large, round, mostly red over a greenish- ROOTS
yellow background color. The flesh is white, crisp, tender and D
juicy with a fine sub-acid flavor similar to a Mac. The tree is
very disease resistant. ZONE 4-8

Red Baron Apple Red Baron is a nice all purpose hardy apple for northern ALL
climes. The medium to large fruit is cherry red blushed on ROOTS
creamy yellow background color. It has a pleasant, acidic, G
tart flavor and is suitable for most uses. It ripens in
September near Wealthy, and appears to keep fairly well into
December. The tree is moderately vigorous. ZONE 3-5

Red Gala Apple Grandpa's Choice Red Gala apple is our special selection ALL
of the famous Royal Gala apple that everyone sees in the ROOTS
produce department. It harvests late summer into early fall in C
September and is one of the finest eating apples there is.
The flesh is yellowish flesh is crisp, juicy and fine tasting. It
can be used for all purposes. It is almost a "must have" for
the backyard orchard. ZONE 5-8

Red Gravenstein Grandpa's Choice Red Gravenstein is a culinary treat! This ALL
Apple antique variety is well known for cooking, sauce, cider and ROOTS
eating out of hand. It is large, with crisp white flesh and a C
distinct, juicy flavor. It will keep moderately well. The fruit is
orangish with red striping on greenish yellow skin. It ripens
late in the summer to early fall. ZONE 5-8

Red McIntosh Grandpa's Choice Red McIntosh is one of the all-time ALL
Apple favorites for some people. Red McIntosh is an early season ROOTS
apple with very aromatic, flavorful, white, juicy flesh. It is A
somewhat firm, but only will keep for shorter periods during
the fall and early winter. It has a steely-red skin that is
distinctive looking to match its very distinctive flavor. It is only
medium large in size, but sets abundant crops. ZONE 3-8

Sweet Sixteen Sweet Sixteen is a popular apple for very cold northern ALL
Apple regions. It ripens in early fall, just ahead of Honeycrisp. It ROOTS
is crisp and juicy with an exotic yellow flesh and a very sweet, A
unusual sugar cane or spicy cherry candy flavor. The fruit
stores for 5 to 8 weeks. It is a good all purpose apple.

Swiss Gourmet Swiss Gourmet, as its name suggests, was a very popular ALL
Apple apple in Europe for a good reason. It has a distinct, sweet ROOTS
and tart flavor. The flesh is creamy white. The fruit is D
medium to large size with a nice red blush. In some areas it
will russet badly, but this does not affect the excellent flavor or
eating quality. Harvests early in the fall a couple weeks
before Jonathan. ZONE 5-8

Wolf River Apple Wolf River apples are enormous, often weighing 1 pound or ALL
more. It has a pale red color over pale yellow skin and soft, ROOTS
tender, slightly mealy, creamy white flesh. Excellent for baking D
whole and drying. Resistant to scab, mildew, fire blight and
cedar apple rust. Trees are very hardy. ZONE 5-7

Auvil Early Fuji If you are a lover of the sweet Fuji apple, but live in the more ALL
Apple northern, shorter season areas, Grandpa's Choice Auvil ROOTS
Early Fuji is the best Fuji variety for your backyard orchard. C
It has all the attributes of regular Fuji, but harvests 5-6
WEEKS earlier, so by mid-September in most areas you can
able picking fully mature, beautiful red Fuji. ZONE 5-8

Binet Rouge Binet Rouge is a French variety that is used for sweet hard ALL
Sweet Hard Cidre cider base. The tree is very precocious and productive. The ROOTS
tree is a week grower and matures in early mid-season in G

September. It is mildew susceptible. It is late blooming and
suitable for frostier locations. ZONE 5-9

Black Gilliflower Black Gilliflower produces large, dark red, almost black ALL
or Sheepnose colored fruit. It is large, long and conical in shape. Its ROOTS
greenish-white flesh has a distinctive aroma and is rich, but G

with a mild sweet flavor. It is prized for baking and drying.
The tree is healthy, vigorous and fruitful. Ripens in
September to October. Fruit hangs well, but becomes drier
when overripe. ZONE 6-9
Burgundy Apple Burgundy produces large, round, solid dark blackish-red fruit. ALL
The skin is smooth and glossy and the red color may bleed ROOTS
into the flesh somewhat. It is an excellent, crisp, sub-acid G
flavored apple. The fruit hangs well up to three weeks, but it
does not store for more than a month after harvest. Ripens in

Crimson Crisp CrimsonCrisp is a new disease resistant apple variety that ALL
Apple should go along well with other Grandpa's Nature Friendly ROOTS
varieties. The medium sized fruit is an attractive crimson red E
and the flesh is very crisp and firm with a tart but complex
flavor. The fruit matures in the mid-season of fall. ZONE 5-8

Crimson Gold Crimson Gold apple is a new disease resistant apple with ALL
Apple excellent qualities. The fruit is bright reddish-orange and ROOTS
medium sized. The flesh is sweet-tart, white, crisp, and juicy. E
It will store well. It ripens about mid-September just ahead of
Golden Delicious. It is very resistant to apple scab. The trees
are moderately vigorous and very productive. ZONE 5-8

Crimson Topaz Crimson Topaz is a new disease resistant dessert apple that ALL
Apple harvests about a week before Golden Delicious, in mid- ROOTS
September. The medium size fruit is an attractive orange-red E
stripe over a yellow background. It is juicy and tasty. It is a
vigorous spurry tree that has an upright growth habit. It is
very precocious. The fruit is very resistant to dropping.

Ellis Bitter-Sweet Ellis Bitter is an excellent hard cidre variety with a bittersweet ALL
Hard Cidre Apple character. The medium sized yellow fruit ripen in September. ROOTS
The tree is fairly vigous, precocious and productive. It is a G
later bloomer. It does not store for long so should be pressed
shortly after harvest. The tree is susceptible to both fire blight
and scab. ZONE 4-8

Enigma Apple Enigma has very large, round fruit with yellow skin covered ALL
with a heavy red blush. It ripens in mid-season and is known ROOTS

Fameuse or Grandma's most fondly remembered apple as a little girl was ALL
Snow Apple Fameuse or as it is commonly called, Snow Apple. It is a very ROOTS
old heritage variety known for its hardiness, good flavor and D
eating quality, and late summer, early fall ripening time. The
old-timers made good use of it for apple cider because of its
aromatic and distinct flavor, and because it is only a fair to
good keeper. The flesh is tender and "snow white" like its
name suggests. The fruit is red over a cream background
color. ZONE 4-8

Frostbite Apple Frostbite(TM) was just recently named by the University of ALL
Minnesota. Known as MN 447, it is an older cultivar that has ROOTS
been used as a parent in the breeding of other successful U E
of MN apple varieties. Because of its unique, sweet,
aromatic, and unusual flavor people who know MN 447 had

Galarina Apple Galarina is a new gala-like disease resistant apple that ALL
shows high tolerance to scab, mildew and fire blight. It is ROOTS

Jonafree Apple Grandpa's Nature Friendly Jonafree is one of the scab ALL
immune varieties, that is most like it namesake, with which it ROOTS
ripens. Jonafree is nearly identical to old-time red Jonathan in C
eating quality, flavor, and appearance. It is slightly less acidic
though. It is a bright red apple, with glossy skin and generally
no russetting. It does not develop "Jonathan" spot when
stored, like normal Jonathan does. Can be used as an all

a "greasy" feeling skin when it gets overripe. Pick earlier if

Spigold Apple Farmers who grew Spigold loved the apple, but it never made ALL
it commercially. Spigold is an exceptionally high quality with ROOTS

NovaSpy Apple Grandpa's Nature Friendly NovaSpy is a good scab ALL

It is moderately juicy, slightly acidic and has very good flavor.

Caville Blanc Caville Blanc was a favorite apple of Thomas Jefferson and ALL
Apple France's Louis XIII. It an excellent sauce, cooking and ROOTS
dessert apple with tender, sweet-spicy, yellowish-white flesh G
with a flavorful, banana-like aroma. It is reported to have
more Vitamin C than an orange. The fruit is only medium-
large sized with pale red dots on its greenish-white skin. It is
an excellent keeper. It is resistant to scab, but not to cedar
apple rust. Late ripening around November. ZONE 5-9

GoldRush Apple GoldRush is a very fine, high quality disease resistant golden ALL
apple with a pretty blush. It is one of the latest harvesting ROOTS
apples, so may not ripen properly in many northern areas. D
However, letting it hang as long as possible and storing for a
while before eating will allow it to mellow. It is very firm, crisp
and juicy. Tart at harvest it will develop a very rich, well
balanced flavor after a few weeks of storage. It stores very

Granny Smith Grandpa's Choice Granny Smith is another of the most ALL
Apple popular varieties that almost needs no description. Go into ROOTS

Red and Golden Delicious. The popularity of Granny is that it
is a brilliant green, very crisp, very tart apple. It can be used
for many purposes. Granny Smith is one of the latest ripening
varieties, so "let it hang" until the first snow flurries in early
November for the best flavor. Ripens better in longer growing
seasons. In many cooler climates, it will get a little red blush
