Design Example 2: effective length

A non-sway frame w/ rigid joints is shown below. Calculate the LE/L for column nos. 1, 2
and 3.

Column 1:
k1 = (2*14300/450) / [2*(14300/450 + 29400/900)] = 0.493
k2 = k1 = 0.493
LE/L = 0.685

Column 2:
k1 = (2*14300/450) / [2*(14300/450 + 29400/900)] = 0.493
k2 = 0.5
LE/L = 0.685

Column 3:
k1 = 1.0
k2 = (2*14300/450) / [2*(14300/450) + 29400/900] = 0.66
LE/L = 0.87

Design Example 3: effective length

A non-sway frame w/ rigid joints is shown below. Calculate the LE/L for column nos. 1, 2
and 3.

Column 1:
k1 = (14300/450 + 14300/600) / [14300/450 + 14300/600 + 2*(29400/900)] = 0.46
k2 = k1 = 0.46
LE/L = 0.665

Column 2:
k1 = (2*14300/450) / [2*(14300/450 + 29400/900)] = 0.493
k2 = 0.91 (BS5950)
LE/L = 0.79

Column 3:
k1 = (14300/450) / (14300/450 + 29400/900) = 0.493
k2 = (2*14300/450) / [2*(14300/450) + 29400/900] = 0.66
LE/L = 0.73
