SECTION 2 : Technology & Innovation
(60 Marks)
Proposal / Idea Details
6. Project Title
AIR POLLUTION MONITORING
SYSTEM (APMS)

7. Domain of Operation of the The project lies in both the services as

project well as the manufacturing domain.
a. Services
b. Manufacturing
c. Both

8. Which Area is your project The project is addressing the

proposing to address (select more environmental cause and also serves
than one if applicable) as a social innovation, it is necessary
i. Technology Innovation to first know the pollution levels in the
ii. Electronics city to take proper measures to control it.
iii. Transport
iv. Food Production and
Scalability
v. Sustainability
vi. Education
vii. Social Innovation
viii. Nutrition / Health / Fitness
ix. Any other please specify

9. What problem is being addressed Over the past quarter century there has
max 100 words been an exponential increase of
industries, and transport which have
caused complex and serious problems to
the environment. The first and foremost
is the severe environmental pollution
which has caused deterioration of
atmosphere, climate change, loss of
biodiversity etc. Thus detection of the
pollutants which cause this atmospheric
imbalance is very necessary.

Mauli: 2016 - NAIN Application Form - Final Page 5 of 14

10. How is the problem being tackled Having visited the 'Air Pollution Board,
currently without your Belagavi', we found that still the old
intervention max 50 words techniques for detecting the pollutant
levels is been followed. The sample of air
is collected from the polluted area and is
then tested for pollutant levels. This is
not a real time system and detection at a
particular place is done once in 2-3
months.
Also there are a few newer systems that
carry out the detection process on real
time basis, but the drawback lies in its
huge size and setup. For example: the air
pollution van in Delhi.

11. What technology intervention is The technology that would be

being proposed by you to address substituting the traditional chemical
the problem defined in point No 9 testing is the use of sensors for the
max 500 words + up to 3 corresponding gases required to be
images / diagrams tested. This makes the result to be
available quicker than those used
currently. A detailed technology base is
provided below:

Hardware: The hardware part of the

system is most important since it
consists of different types of sensors
which detect different level of
pollutants present in the atmosphere.
The output obtained from above
sensors is sent to the microcontroller.
This data is stored in buffer and
processed continuously. Here the
comparative analysis with the
threshold level of pollutants is carried
out and decision regarding air
pollution is made. The different
sensors being used are:
Carbon Monoxide MQ7 (0-
1000ppm)
Nitrogen dioxide - MiCS-2714
Sulphur dioxide -3SP-SO2-20
Hydrogen MQ8 (0-5000ppm)
Ammonia MQ135 (0-1000ppm)
Ozone MQ131 (0-2ppm)

Mauli: 2016 - NAIN Application Form - Final Page 6 of 14

Methane MQ4 (0-10000ppm)
Carbon Di Oxide MG811 (0-
5000ppm)

Software: The open source Arduino

Software (IDE) is used to write the
code and upload it to the Arduino
Mega Board. We will be running this
software on Windows 7. The code
mainly consists of different algorithms
for all sensors to convert the analog
values obtained to corresponding
digital values. These values are
continuously sent to a HyperTerminal
and LCD display.
Microcontroller: The microcontroller
used is Arduino Mega.
This board is based on ATMEGA
2560.
It has 54 digital I/O pins, 16
analog inputs, 4 UARTs, 16 MHz
crystal oscillator.
High performance low power 8-
bit microcontroller.
RISC architecture.
32*8 general purpose working
registers.
On chip 2 cycle multiplier.
8KB internal SRAM, 4KB
EEPROM.

Communication Module: SIM 900A

is used at the transmitter and receiver
end to exchange the data of the
obtained pollutant levels. It is an ultra
compact and reliable wireless module.
Its features are as follows:
Dual band 900/1800 MHz.
GPRS mobile station classB.
Supply voltage range: 3.1
4.8V.
Low power consumption: 1.5mA.
Operating temperature: -40o C to
+85oC.
The data obtained from the GSM is then
uploaded onto a website. Here the data
is manipulated to be displayed onto the
Google maps for easy access as shown

Mauli: 2016 - NAIN Application Form - Final Page 7 of 14

in the attached figure.
Solar Panel: The most important
advantage of this that it is a solar based
project, which would help us in
conservation of energy.

The block diagram attached explains all

the interconnectivity.

12. In laymans terms describe How The major objective of this system is to
does your proposed technology in detect the air pollution levels. This is
point no. 9 work max 100 words done with the use of sensors which take
in the atmospheric air and give out the
corresponding output values. These
values are then sent to a processor which
does the job of holding the data and
sending it to the GSM. The GSM is a
mobile like module which sends the data
onto the website which we develop. The
website then shows the data onto a
Google map for different regions.

13. How is solution provided by you in In the existing system the analysis
point No. 9 better than point no. is performed using chemical
10 i.e. existing solutions max techniques. This involves much of
100 words storage space and hence the
system is huge in size. The new
system proposed by us is compact
in nature.
The time period of analysis is not
frequent (per 3 months) whereas
this proposed system performs
analysis 24x7.
The proposed system is solar
powered and hence energy
efficient.
It is also cost effective compared to
existing system

14. Have you carried out any Yes

literature survey and / or Patent
search?

15. If yes, summarise the outcome in The air pollution detection system
100 words was found to be installed in vehicle
which had the mechanism of
switching off the vehicle if the
pollution level rose above the

out in 12 months?

20. If Yes, what can be expected at A real time air pollution monitoring
end of 12 months according to system which detects the gas levels in
you atmosphere and displays on the website.
If No, Why not The system will be solar powered and the
Max 50 words readings will be accurate as the sensors
used will be calibrated properly.

21. Market Potential based on your Our potential is the air pollution control
market research (e.g. customer board. During the market survey we
interviews / competitors business found out that the pollution board uses
trends ) Please provide summary chemical techniques to monitor the
of your survey with potential pollution level. A separate chemistry lab
customers - max 100 words is required for the analysis. The system
which is proposed can substitute the
chemical techniques with enhanced
accuracy.
