Lets Read the Authors Note
The author writes as though he has been inspired
by a real painting of Joey. What effect does this
have?
Read Chapter 1
Page 3-10

In pairs, come up with at least one technique that

the author uses to engage a reader. Take two
minutes to discuss.
The next slides are notes on how basic PEE
chains are structured.

Point, Example, Explain

State your point clearly and briefly. Eg Mr Sir appears to be as tough and as
scary as a rattlesnake.
Quote from the text to prove what you are Eg Mr Sir even has, a tattoo of a
saying is true rattlesnake on his arm
Explain how what you are saying answers Eg This links Mr Sir to a rattlesnake
the question because, like a rattlesnake, Mr Sir is
something to be feared.

Q. How is Mr Sir like a Rattlesnake?

A. Mr Sir appears to be as tough and as scary as a rattlesnake.
Mr Sir even has, a tattoo of a rattlesnake on his arm.
Therefore, this links Mr Sir to a rattlesnake because, like a
rattlesnake, Mr Sir is something to be feared.

How do we know on page 3 that Joeys
start in life wasnt pleasant?
Joeys start in life was unpleasant. I know this
because Joey says there were damp stables and
rats where he grew up. This example highlights that
his life was devastating and miserable. The word
rats tells us too that he lived in unhygienic
conditions that the reader might describe as unsafe
and unjust. I believe, the writer deliberately used
this description to horrify the reader and make them
feel pity for Joey.
Compare the previous PEE with this
one
Albert feels delighted when he meets Joey. This is
explained by Joey when he say his face broken into
a beaming smile. The purpose of the word
beaming tells us that Albert is happy to see the
horse. It also suggests he is feeling ecstatic. This
makes the reader realise that Joey needed someone
like Albert to make his life enjoyable.
P: Joeys start in life was unexciting. E: This is
shown by Joey when he says the terror of it stayed
with me all of my life. E: (level 4)The writer says
this to suggest that Joey hasnt had a good start in
life. (Level 5) The word terror is used to captivate
the reader. (Level 6) Also, stayed with me tells us
he was always haunted by this memories. Reading
this I feel emotionally touched by his experience.
(Level 7) The writers goal was to make us realise
that Joey was grateful when he met Albert. .
Therefore, although his start in life was horrible, it
got better once he discovered love.
Answer these questions:

Chapter 1:
1. Describe how Joey was taken back to his new
home.

2. How was Joey described on page 1?

3. How did Zoey help Joey feel safe in his new

home? (p6) Use as much detail as you can.

Extract analysis p46 Chapter 6
There was all about us on the ship an air of great exuberance and expectancy. The
soldiers were buoyant with optimism, as if they were embarking on some great military
picnic; it seemed none of them had a care in the world. As they tended us in our stalls the
troopers joked and laughed together as I had never heard them before. And we were to
need their confidence around us, for it was a stormy crossing and many of us became
overwrought and apprehensive as the ship tossed wildly in the sea. Some of us kicked out
at our stalls in a desperate effort to break free and to find ground that did not pitch and
plunge under our feet, but the troopers were always there to hold us steady and to
comfort us

Find the following highlight the example and label the feature:
alliteration adverb atmospheric adjectives descriptive pairs

Extension: Comment on the appropriateness of the word buoyant in this analysis.
