CHILD LABOUR

ARTICLE

ABSTRACT:-
Keywords: The problem of child labour is a deep socio-economic problem faced by
almost all countries of the world. It, however, is a serious problem mostly of the
developing as well as under developing countries. Infact, children particularly from
low-income countries are being exploited on the global market for monetary gains.
This problem also is a big social problem in India as India still falls under the
category of developing nations. Various studies have made it very clear that a large
number of children in India are used as labours at a very early stage of their life.
Most of these children are not aware of the rights and privileges available for them
as they are not covered by the educational schemes of the government. Poverty
and illiteracy among the parents of these children are considered as the root cause
of this problem. Therefore, we need to focus more and more on these problems in
order to check the prevalence of child labour in india.

INTRODUCTION
The problem of child labour is not only a problem of the children. It, infact, is a deep
societal problem. Today, this issue has become a major issue on both the domestic
as well as international stage. Various studies have made it clear that children
belonging to low-income countries are being exploited on the global market for
monetary gains.Child labour is a serious problem because it can limit a child's
physical, mental, social or psychological development. In other words, child labour
can put a limitation on the all round development of children. In common parlance,
'Child Labour' can be defined as the work for children that harms them or exploits
them physically, mentally, morally or by blocking access to education. It is very
important to mention here that there is no universally accepted definition of 'child
labour'. However, the term 'child labour' is defined as work that deprives children of
their childhood, their potential and their dignity and that is harmful to physical and
mental development. It is needless to mention that a healthy environment is very
essential for the healthy development of a child. A nation cannot move in the path
of progress unless its citizens development is ensured. But today, almost in all
countries of the world children are forced to work in human conditions. Today, in
India also a large number of children are being exploited both inside and outside
their homes. These children are ignorant about the rights and privileges available
for them. The rights of these children are violated at every step of their life.

1.To identify various factors responsible for the prevalence of child labour.

2.To evaluate the role played by the government in controlling child labour.

3.To find out some measures to fight against this social evil.

METHODOLOGY:
In this paper only secondary data are used and these are collected from relevant
books, journals etc

CAUSES OFCHILD LABOUR IN INDIA:

The issue of child labour is a very complex issue in a county like India where over
40% of the population is still living under the poverty line. Therefore, poverty may
be identified as the chief cause that forced the children to work. It is infact the
financial backwardness of the parents that forced their children to work. In many
poor families children are treated as a source of income by their parents. The
bureaucrats are of the view that the problem of child labour cannot be totally
eradicated due to nonavailablement of substantial alternative employment
opportunities before them.According to the social scientists, poverty is the main
cause of child labour. Apart from these parental ignorance, excessive population,
illiteracy, lack of proper guidance are also some other responsible causes of child
labour in India.

SUGGESTIONS FOTREDUCING CHILD LABOUR

Children are the future of a society. There is a saying that, today's children are
tomorrows nation builders. Childhood is (perhaps) the best time of human life
because at this stage children are free from all tensions. It is the most productive
phase of a human life. Therefore, this stage of human life should not be spoiled by
forcing them to work as labourers. Here, we would like to suggest some measures
for checking the prevalence of the practice of child labour in India Various acts
relating to protection of child rights should be implemented properly. At the early
stage of their life no children should be used as laboures. Media should also play an
active role in developing awareness among people about the ill effects of child
labour. As poverty is the chief cause of child labour therefore the govt. should take
bold steps for eradicating poverty. People should be given proper education of
family planning so that the excessive growth of population can be controlled. The
voluntary organizations too have a very important role to play to ensure that the
rights of the child are protected. Some awareness camps should be organized by
the NGO's and other govt. authorities. Again the policies and acts of the govt.
should also be implemented properly to protect children from being exploited.
Awareness should be created among people to protect human rights of the children.
Moreover, imparting proper education to the children is very important because it
can broaden their outlook. Education also makes them aware of their future life as
well as about their own rights.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion it can be said that in spite of various steps taken by the Indian
Government for eradicating child labour from the country, the presence of a large
number of child labourers are still threatening the socio-economic development of
the country. The existing legal provisions are proved to be inadequate to check the
prevalence of child labour in India. Therefore, the government must take bold steps
in fighting against this social evil/ Moreover, our society must also evolve strong
social sanctions against ill effects of child labour. Here, the role of the common
people is also very important because without their active participation and support
the attempts of the government in eradicating child labour will never become a
successful one.
