1 WALLPAPERING

Read the following instruction and answer the questions. Olvasd el az albbi lerst,
majd vlaszolj a krdsekre!

1. First make a vertical line on the wall using a plumb bob. Does this step very carefully
as all your following strips of paper will depend on the precision of this vertical line.
2. Lay out your wallpaper on your table and cut the length a few centimeters more than
the length of your wall.
3. Cut several strips to size leaving an additional few centimeters for alignment. Test the
alignment on your table.
4. After that, fold your paper in the middle. Paste half of your paper but leave one or two
centimeters unpasted on the top. Fold this section over and paste and fold the other
half.
5. Allow the paste to set for a couple minutes.
6. Unfold the top half of the paper and align with your plumb line.
7. Take the folded length to the wall next to the window. If there are more windows in
the room, start next to the largest one. You can start either from the left or from the
right hand side of the window.
8. Use a step ladder to reach to the ceiling. Open out the length and position the top
against the ceiling, leaving a little over for trimming. Follow the length along the edge
of the pencil line drawn on the wall. Always hang wallpaper vertically.
9. Stroke the hanging brush down the centre of the length to force out air, and then
gently brush towards the side edges. When the top is in place, open the bottom fold
in the length and brush it in the same way.
10. At the top and bottom, mark the paper where it needs to be trimmed. Peel the paper
back and cut off the excess piece. Then press the length back.
11. Continue the process by hanging the next length. If there is a pattern to match, gently
press into position against the seam before brushing into position. Smooth the length
in a similar way and trim the top and bottom.
12. Hang two or three lengths and smooth down the seams with a seam roller.

2 TILING A WALL

Read the following instruction and solve the Task. Olvasd el az albbi lerst, majd oldd
meg a feladatokat!

Ceramic tiles are really attractive and quite durable materials for
walls. You can use them in any rooms and installing them is not
too difficult.

However here are some things you always have to remember when
you do this job:

1. Always check the horizontal level of each row. Place a stick

on top and check it with a spirit level.
2. Choose the correct ceramic tile adhesive. Most are ready
mixed, but a few others you have to be mix with water. Check
the side of the container for the approximate area the
adhesive will cover.
3. In wet places, like e.g. bathrooms use a waterproof tile
adhesive. Use a heat resistant flexible adhesive, if you lay
tiles next to a fireplace or cooker.

First spread the adhesive onto the wall using a notched spreader or
serrated trowel to. Cover a manageable area for laying
approximately 6 tiles. Put a layer of adhesive on the back of the tile
and press into the desired position.

It is very important to lay the first tile correctly, as its position will
determine the position of all the other tiles in the room. Use plastic
spacers, card or matchsticks to regulate the distance between the
tiles. When the wall is complete you will grout these areas and if they
are not equally spaced your wall will look terrible.

Use a spirit level to check the horizontal level of each row. Leave the
wall for 24 hours.

Then remove the battens and cut the border tiles and fix in a similar
way, using a tile cutter. Remove the plastic spacers or thick card and
grout the tiles.

3 PAINTING THE WALLS

Before you start painting your room there is a really hard task to do. It is the preparation
work. If you want your wall to be really nice, first you have to patch all holes, do sanding and
scraping, removing all hardware.
Finished? Now you can start painting!
Here are some ideas how to do it:

Using a roller.

Dip your roller in the paint tray and then roll it back and forth on the ridged part of the tray.
This removes excess paint and spreads the paint all the way around the roller.
Start moving it on the wall in diagonal or zigzag lines to get the paint on the surface.
Then go back over the area and move the roller up and down to even out the surface.

Painting with brush

The best way to paint a room is from top to bottom. So, start with the ceiling then do the
walls. To paint a ceiling, begin by painting the edge of the ceiling along the walls with a
brush. Paint out about 5 centimeters to 6 centimeters onto the ceiling. So you will get an area
that you can overlap with the roller.
The easiest way to paint a ceiling is with a roller and an extension handle. This way you can
stand on the floor while you paint. If it is necessary, use a stepladder, but then the work is
much slower. Start in the corner of the room. Paint the first stroke lengthwise, along the
window. Continue painting in the same direction, until you finish it. Then even out the surface
without dipping the roller in the paint tray again.
When the ceiling is dry, you can start painting the walls. Use a brush to paint corners, ceiling
lines and areas near woodwork. Paint one entire wall or area at a time.
Use the roller and work your way across the room, from the ceiling down to the floor.

4 BRICKLAYING

Preparation: mixing mortar

To mix mortar use: 1 shovelful of cement, 1/4 shovelful lime, 3 shovels of sand. Add enough
water to get the consistency of soft mud. It is ready when it slides from the shovel easily, but
does not run. Do not mix more mortar than what you can use for 2 hours. If the mortar loose
plasticity before you can use it, add a little water to refresh it.

When you lay brick, it can not be bone dry, so 15 minutes before you want to use it, spray it
with water. (Note that 15 minutes is important as you need damp and not wet bricks.)

Build the corners first. Go three or four courses high, and then fill in the wall from corner to
corner. Lay the bottom course on mortar. Often use of a hand level to check if the wall is
plumb and the courses level.

Especially in the corners sometimes you need to cut bricks smaller that can finish the row. To
do this, use a chisel. Carefully tap chisel with the hammer to mark the line of the cut on two
sides of the brick. Then, point the chisel inward and hit it hard with the hammer, to break it.

After finishing 2 or 3 courses remove excess mortar with the trowel. Then seal the joints with
a short length of pipe, that is a bit thicker than the joint itself.
Do not spread mortar for more than three bricks at a time. Roughen the surface of the mortar
by making a shallow furrow with the point of the trowel.
For the head (vertical) joint spread one end of the brick with mortar.

5 CARPENTRY WORK BUILDING ROOF

Doing any work needs safety rules to keep. This is especially true when
you work on high places like scaffoldings and roofs. Here are some good
advice you should take in order to be protected:

Wear heavy rubber soled boots.

Step slowly and carefully to make sure you dont lose balance.

Be sure no one is standing below the work unless absolutely necessary.

Wear hard hats when working under or around overhead construction.

Finally: Never bypass safety to save money or rush a project.

Now lets see the construction work itself:

First, carefully lift one end of the rafter truss and rest it upside down next to the end set of
metal rafter ties. Then place the other end into position on the opposing wall.

Slowly and carefully turn the truss right side up and move it
into place. After that nail the rafter tie in place over each X
where the rafter will connect with the cap plate.
Rafter tie

While one person holds a 4'-8' level against each truss and holds it in position, another
person nails a temporary brace to the unit across the sloping top chord.

Continue this procedure until all rafters are up and in place.

6 SLATE ROOF INSTALLATION HINT

1) Felt the board roof deck with 30 lb felt, then chalk a line marking the top of each
course of slate.
2) Attach your cant strip, nail your starter row, and begin slating.
3) Periodically leave a slate out and install a roof jack.
4) Proceed in this manner until you have staged the roof with adequate roof scaffolding.
5) When done, install a stainless steel slate hook where ever a slate was left out. Hook
a slate in place. The slate can always be removed again later should the unlikely
need for future roof scaffolding present itself.

7 PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) ROOFING

For years, homeowners have wanted to notice the impact
of solar energy on their bills without seeing it on their
roofs. Although the term "solar power" may be
synonymous with energy-efficiency, environmental-
friendliness, and freedom from utilities, many solar
systems have been avoided because of their unattractive
structure. For this reason, photovoltaic (PV) modules
(which convert sunlight into electricity) that are integrated
into roofing materials have been developed to replace
traditional PV modules that are mounted on rooftop
racks. The result is a solar system that is difficult to notice
on the roof but has benefits that are hard to miss. Once
installed, PV roofing produces free electricity from
sunlight that can power certain home functions or supply
the entire electricity needs of a home and eliminate the
need connection to the utility company.
Photovoltaic roofing replaces existing roofing materials such as asphalt shingles, standing seam metal
roofing, and slate or concrete tiles. Most residential PV systems consist of a PV module or building
material that produces electrical current, battery storage, and an inverter to convert PV current (DC) to
standard household current (AC). Small home PV systems are commonly attached directly to
appliances or lighting systems, while larger systems can be stand-alone and supply all power for the
home.
PV systems can also be used in conjunction with utility-supplied power. Excess power produced
during daylight hours can be fed back into the utility's lines, while electricity can be drawn into the
home when demand is greater than can be supplied by the PV roofing. Small residential PV systems
commonly have a peak power production of about 500 watts, while whole-house PV systems
commonly produce between 2,000 and 4,000 watts.

8 FIBERGLASS REINFORCED PLASTIC EXTERIOR DECKS

A new decking material is available that needs no maintenance and

doesn't crack, split, or warp. The exceptionally durable exterior decking
material is made from fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) that is both
attractive and is expected to last the life of the home without routine
maintenance. Traditional wood decking materials, both preservative-
treated and naturally rot-resistant materials, have a life expectancy
ranging from 10 to 20 years when maintained periodically with
chemical sealants. FRP decking is stronger and more durable than
traditional decking, and retains an attractive appearance without
maintenance.

This new decking material is made of pultruded fiberglass reinforced plastic. Pultrusion is a process in
which continuous strands of fiberglass are pulled through a bath of polyester resins to coat the fibers,
and then through a die to give the desired profile. FRP materials are strong enough to be used as
structural beams in industrial applications that require resistance to chemical attack and fire. The
material is also highly scratch and impact resistant and is colored throughout, which allows it to retain
its looks with only periodic washing.

FRP decking is typically sold as an entire system, including deck boards, attachment clips, trim, and
hand rail material. The decking material is typically attached to a standard preservative-treated wood
sub-frame. Deck profiles are "C" shaped, sized comparable to 2 x 4 and 2 x 6 lumber, and can be run
at 45 or 90 degree angles to the support joists. Edge trim is used to cover lumber support framing and
hide the hollow profiles of the deck boards. Handrail assemblies are also available that include
handrail, bottom rail, and spindles. Optionally, systems can accommodate the installation of an
integrated bench.

9 MORTARLESS BRICK VENEER

Skilled masonry work is a major cost factor for

veneer brick walls. A new exterior wall system
uses concrete bricks cast in special shapes
which require no mortar and can be installed by
anyone with basic carpentry skills. In most
applications, the existing wall framing structure
supports the weight of the bricks, so foundation
ledges are not required, and the system is
suitable for retrofitting existing walls. The
manufacturer states that the system provides
homeowners with the luxury look of real brick
exteriors at a more affordable cost.
The dimensions and appearance of the brick
faces are similar to traditional split-faced bricks,
and like bricks used for conventional veneer
walls, they are installed in staggered rows.
Hidden from view is the unusual shape of the
cast block, which allows shingle-like overlapping.
Because the system does not require footings or
mortar, it can be used on new or existing
buildings. Installers stack the blocks in rows and
screw them to vertical furring strips attached to
the wall sheathing. The furring strips provide a
positive connection and create an air space,
allowing the veneer surface to breath and
providing drainage for any moisture that may
penetrate. Thermal insulation characteristics are
about the same as common face brick (R-0.11)
and each unit weighs just over 4 lbs. Because of
the interlocking shape of the materials, the
system requires no mortar and can be installed
by a contractor, handyman, or homeowner with
basic woodworking and layout skills.

10 INSULATING CONCRETE FORMS

Concrete forms have taken a new shape-and

purpose. Insulating concrete forms (ICFs) are
rigid plastic foam forms that hold concrete in
place during curing and remain in place
afterwards to serve as thermal insulation for
concrete walls. The foam blocks, or planks are
lightweight and result in energy-efficient, durable
construction.

ICFs consist of insulating foam, commonly expanded polystyrene (EPS) or extruded polystyrene
(XPS). The three basic types are hollow foam blocks, foam planks held together with plastic ties, and 4
x 8 panels with integral foam or plastic ties. ICFs can be used to form various structural configurations,
such as a standard wall, post and beam, or grid. They provide backing for interior and exterior finishes.
Some manufacturers use ICFs for roof and floor construction.

Insulation values of ICF walls vary depending on the material and its thickness. Typical insulation
values range from R-17 to R-26, compared to between R-13 and R-19 for most wood-framed walls.
ICF energy performance also benefits from large thermal mass of the concrete, which absorbs heat to
moderate against wide temperature swings. Concrete construction, also, is inherently airtight.

The strength of ICF structures relative to lumber depends on configuration, thickness, and
reinforcement.

11 ENERGY-EFFICIENT INTERIOR STORM WINDOWS

Homeowners are usually interested in lowering their energy expenses. However, they are not willing to
pay large costs or sacrifice the appearance of their home to do so. Interior storm windows provide a
compromise by effectively increasing the energy performance of a home by updating single-pane
windows at significant cost savings over window replacement. They are accepted in historic and other
homes whose owners want to retain the original windows or do not wish to alter the homes
architecture with exterior storm windows. In addition to energy benefits, interior storm windows can
improve sound resistance, decrease condensation, and reduce ultra-violet (UV) light damage to
furnishings.

Interior storm windows can reduce window air leakage by improving the overall window assemblys
insulation value. They improve insulation by creating a "dead" air space between the interior and
exterior windows.

A test of one brand of interior storm window performed on three Florida residences reported reduced
heating and cooling energy use by 29 percent and noticeably reduced interior window condensation.
Interior storm windows can function in place, year-round, or can be removed from windows for
ventilation during milder weather. They can also be customized fit any size rectangular window and
some manufacturers advertise the ability to fit a variety of geometric shaped windows.

Interior storm windows generally have mounting brackets made of vinyl or metal that is permanently
fastened to one or more sides of the interior window frame, and detachable glass or acrylic panes. The
transparent pane commonly incorporates a magnetic strip for easy attachment to the bracket. Panes
are also available in low-E glazing to resist heat gain and in UV-resistant glazing to reduce UV
damage to interior furnishings. Low-E is a spectrally selective coating. This is coated or tinted glazing
with optical properties that are transparent to some wavelengths of energy and reflective to others.

1. DO plan to arrive on time or a few minutes early. Late arrival for a job interview is never
excusable.
2. DO greet the employer by his surname if you are sure of the pronunciation. If you are not, ask
him to repeat his name. Give the appearance of energy as you walk. Smile. Shake his hand
firmly. Be genuinely glad to meet the employer and the prospects are excellent you'll find him
an interesting person.
3. DO wait until you are offered a chair before sitting. Sit upright in your chair. Look alert and
interested at all times. Be a good listener as well as a good talker. Smile
4. DO look a prospective employer in the eye while you talk to him.
5. DO follow the employer's leads, but try to get the employer to describe the position and the
duties to you early in the interview so that you can relate your background, skills and
accomplishments to the position.
6. DO make sure that your good points get across to the interviewer in a factual, logical, sincere
manner. Stress achievements. For example: sales records, processes developed, savings
achieved, systems installed, etc.
7. DO always conduct yourself as if you are determined to get the job you are discussing. Never
close the door on an opportunity. It is better to be in a position where you can choose from a
number of positions - rather than only one.
8. If the employer presents you with an application to complete, DO fill it out neatly and
completely

Interview DONT's

1. DON'T smoke even if the employer smokes and offers you a cigarette. DON'T chew gum.
2. If the employer presents you with an application to complete, DON'T relax and rely on your
application or resume to do your selling for you. Most employers will want you to speak for
yourself.
3. DON'T answer questions with a simple yes, or no. Explain wherever possible. Tell those
things about yourself which relate to the situation.
4. DON'T lie. Answer questions truthfully, frankly and as to the point, as possible.
5. DON'T ever make derogatory remarks about your present or former employers or companies.
6. DON'T over answer, questions. The interviewer may steer the conversation into politics or
economics. Since this is a ticklish situation it is best to answer the questions honestly, trying
not to say any more than is necessary.
7. DON'T inquire about SALARY, VACATIONS, BONUSES, RETIREMENT, etc on the initial
interview unless you are positive the employer is interested in hiring you. If the interviewer
asks what salary you want, indicate what you've earned but that you're more interested in
opportunity than in a specific salary amount at the present.
