Procedure
OpeningtoLesson
Displayagraphshowingtheresultsofasurvey.Itcouldbeasimpleonequestionlineor
bargraph.Askstudentsiftheyknowthedifferentpartsofthegraph:title,intervals,etc.
Ask:Whatinformationdoesthegraphshow?Whataretheresultsofthesurvey?What
canyouinterpretfromthegraph?Whatconclusionscouldyoumake?Whowouldbenefit
fromknowingtheresults?
Allowforresponsesanddiscussion.
DAYONE
Modeling
Tellstudentstheywillbecreatingsimilarsurveysandreportingtheresultsand
conclusions.Theywillanswerthesametypesofquestionsbasedonresultsoftheir
createdsurveys.Reviewthedifferenttypesofgraphswithstudents:bar,line,etc.(You
mayuseaworksheetforstudentpracticebeforebeginningtheactivity.)
GuidedPractice
Pairstudents.Telleachpairtheymustcreate3to5relatedquestionstoaskotherstudents
intheschool.Giveanexampleoftwoquestionsthatmayberelated:Whattimedoyou
gotobedatnight?Whattimedoyouwakeup?Oncethequestionsarecreated,the
studentswillusethesurveywith25students.Theywillrecordtheresults.
Thestudentpairsmustcreateadatacollectionpagetorecordtheresultsaswell.The
surveyswillbeconductedandresultsusedthenextday.Theteachershouldreviewthe
surveyquestionsbeforestudentsarepermittedtoapproachotherstudents.Inaddition,if
possibletrytopreventsimilarorrepeatedpatternsofquestions.
DAYTWO
Pairsofstudentsmeettoorganizeanddiscusstheresultsofthesurveys.Theymustdecide
onwhichtypeofgraphorgraphstousetodisplaytheresultsusingtheposterboard.They
begincompilingthedata,findthemean,range,andotherinformationwhichwillbe
helpfulforinterpretingtheinformation.Thetwostudentswillthenusetheinformationto
writeoutashortreportwhichwillbeorallypresentedtotheclass.Next,createadisplay
boardtocreativelypresentthefindings,usingimages,atitle,etc.Allowthestudentsat
leastonefullclassperiodtocompletetheprojectoncetheygatheredalloftheirdata.
Schedulestudentspresentationsthenextday.
DAYTHREE
Eachpairofstudentsreceivesbetween3to5minutestoreporttheirfindingsand
interpretationstotheclass,drawingconclusions,etc.Thepresentationsshouldanswerthe
questions,andmore,posedintheopeningtothelesson.RemindstudentsNOTtosimply
reporttheresults.
Assessthestudentsbasedonarubricpreparedaheadoftime.
IndependentPractice
Teachercreatedorcommercialhandoutsforpracticewithgraphing,including
interpretinggraphs,themean,range,etc.

Ask:Whatdifficultieswerethereinsurveyingotherstudents?Whatwerethevariables?
