Background of the study

Participation is a mental and emotional involvement of a person in a group

situation which encourages him to contribute to group goals and share responsibilities in
them. Thus, the three important elements in participation are:

(1) It is a mental and emotional involvement rather than mere physical activity.
(2) Participation must motivate a person to contribute to a specific situation to
invest his own resources, such as initiative, knowledge, and creativity in the
objectives of the organization.
(3) It encourages people to share responsibility for a decision.

Within the last two decades in the realm of human relations, the workers
participation in management has been regarded as a powerful behavioral tool for
managing the industrial relations systems. Workers participation is crucial for better
results in an organization. It helps in developing a technology to resolve and to achieve
constructive co-operation among the partners of production. Participation lays primary
emphasis on the human element and rests on the assumption that a worker is more than a
pair of hands. He is a human resource.

Need for the study

Human Resources Development is the crux of Human Resources Management. One of

the best methods to develop a companys own people is to give them responsibilities and
challenges. But for the best in man to come out, it is necessary for him to know why he is
doing certain things and not the others, and participation is precisely a quest towards that
end.
The study attempts to prove that there is a need for an informal functional
communication channel from workers to management, which is most essential for
workers involvement. In case such a functional structure is developed it can solve many
of the labour problems that prevail at present. Moreover, the management will be enabled
to ensure greater involvement of workers in the decision-making process and greater
cordiality in industrial relations.
Workers participation in management brings immense change in the lives of
employees and thus this study will suggest strategies to improve the motivational level so
that the workers can work with initiative, zeal, interest and enthusiasm, as it will give
them a sense of inclusion in decision making within the organization.

Objective& Scope

The reason for conducting this particular research is to fulfill some objectives,
which are as follows:
(1) To investigate the existing schemes of Workers Participation in Management.
(2) To suggest a more effective system/strategy of workers involvement in the
process of decision-making.
(3) An industry/unit wise comparative analysis within UP.

Research Methodology

This will include a study of different industrial units within Uttar Pradesh. The
research design will be based on the survey method. This survey will be carried out by
personal meeting and through questionnaire developed. The selection of sample will be
based in Random Selection Technique.
This section will cover the explanation of the constituents of the questionnaire such as
why participation is relevant to study and its importance in workers life.
Covering each and every aspect of a worker working in the organization relatively to
WPM, certain data will be collected and then after the analysis of observations it will be
presented in the classified and tabular form.
