- isostasy

2. What is the average geothermal gradient in the crust?

- 25 0C per kilometer

3. What is the range of the wavelength are our eyes sensitive to?
- 4 x 10-7 to 7 x 10-7 m

4. How is each new amino acid attached to the growing chain?

- By a peptide bond

5. This land reptile's fossil was found in both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
- cynognathus

AVERAGE:
1. Direction of induced emf in a circuit is in accordance with law of
- Conservation of energy

2. If the Pacific Ocean is narrowing at a rate of 2.5 cm per year, how close will it
contract in one hundred thousand years?
- 2.5 km. Solution: d = r x t

3. There are 400 turns of wire in an iron-core coil. If this coil is to be used as the
primary of a transformer, how many turns must be wound on the coil to form the
secondary winding of the transformer to have a secondary voltage of one volt if
the primary voltage is five volts?
- 80 turns Solution: (NS/NP = VS/VP = IP/IS) Ns= vsnp/vp= (1v) (400T)/
(5v) = 80T

4. A modern microwave oven emits radiation at the frequency of 2450 MHz. What is
the wavelength of the emitted radiation? 2.450 x 103

- 1.2 x 10-1 m

5. Loop in magnetic field rotates due to _________________.

- Torque

DIFFICULT:

1. A sample of 0.500 moles of gas is placed in a container of volume of 2.50 L. What

is the pressure of the gas in torr if the gas is at 25oC?
- 3720 torr
Solution:
P = nRT = (0.500 moles) (0.0821 L atm) (298 K) = 4.89 atm or 3720 torr
V (mole K) (2.50 L)

2. If 2.00 mol of gas occupies 4.50 L at STP. How much of the same gas will occupy
3.00 L at STP?
- 1.33 moles
Solution: n2 = V2n1 = (3.00 L) (2.00 moles) = 1.33 moles
V1 (4.50 L)

3. A container holds 500 mL of CO2 at 20C and 742 torr. What will be the volume of
the CO2 if the pressure is increased to 795 torr?
- 467 mL CO2
Solution: P1V1 = P2V2
V2 = P1V1/P2
V2 = (742 torr) (500. mL)/795 torr

4. You have a convex mirror with a focal length of -10 m. What will the magnification
of an object be if the object is placed at 15 m from the mirror?

- 0.4

Solution: First of all, we need to find the location of the image. We know the focal length
of the mirror (it is a convex, thus, the focal length is negative) and the distance that the
object is placed in front of that mirror. Hence, by using eqn. 1 we get

The image will be formed 6 m behind the mirror. Therefore, since we now know the
distance (from the mirror) that the image will be formed we can take eqn. 2 and find the
corresponding magnification.

In general, the rule is that if an object is placed at any distance in front of a convex mirror,
then the image will be formed behind the mirror and it will be upright (virtual image).

Moreover, the further away we place the object from the mirror the closer it will get to the
focal length of the mirror and the smaller it will be.

5. A 5 cm (diameter) coin is positioned 20 cm away from a convex mirror that has a

focal length of -15 cm. What is the diameter of the image?

- 2.14 cm

Solution: In order to find the diameter (height) we, firstly, need to find the distance at
which the image will be formed. Therefore, we need to make use of eqn. 1.
Hence, the distance at which the image will be formed is 8.57 cm behind the mirror.

In order to now find the diameter of that object use eqn. 2 which provides a relationship
between the distances and the diameters.
