What does it mean to be civilized?

Throughout discussions about the novel, focus on what happens on the literal
level in the book and what that development means on the symbolic level. That
is, what happens literally to the boys and what is the author saying
metaphorically about the structures of civilization?

Jack will be put on trial for crimes associated with his leadership of the boys. Roles include: Jack, his
defense attorney & assistant, a prosecutor & assistant. Everyone else will be witnesses called to testify for
or against Jack and need to be prepared with testimony supported by text-based details.
