Week of the Young Child
The Week of the Young Child was a huge success! Throughout the week of April 11-17th, centers
across the county celebrated young children, teachers, and families. Many events were held
to honor children and the people who love them. Families had the opportunity to share why their
children are special, visit their children's classrooms, eat lunch at the centers, and attend special
story times. Some centers purchased copies of "What a Treasure," this year's One Book, Every
Young Child selection, and distributed them to all of the preschoolers.

The highlight of the week was the WOYC Awards and Recognition Banquet, held at the fabulous Va-
lencia Ballroom. Over 350 attendees were delighted by the keynote speaker, Will Hillen-
brand, illustrator of "What a Treasure." Mary Ellen Pann, from Fox 43 WPMT, once again graciously
donated her time to emcee the exciting event. The dedication of the teachers was evident during
the awards portion. Many teachers were nominated by parents and coworkers, and there were sev-
eral lucky recipients of classroom project awards. Many thanks to the generous donors who pro-
vided us with incredible door prizes. Angie Sparks, a first-year co-chair of the WOYC Committee,
was overwhelmed to see all of the hard-working ECE professionals gather to celebrate young chil-
dren!

2nd Annual Networking Night
YAAEYC sponsored its second annual Networking Night on April 28, 2010 from 6-9. The vision
of this event was to provide a forum for early childhood and school age teachers and directors to
share ideas with each other and check out three high quality child care centers in the York
area. They also got to snack at each center! This year, the 70 participants visited the Jewish
Community Center, the YWCA York Market Street location and Crispus Attucks. A huge thank
you to those centers for supporting the teaching community in this way! Some comments from
participants were:
“It’s great that we can all learn from each other!”
“My favorite part was seeing how other centers use their space and have their rooms ar-
ranged”
“The best part was meeting other professionals and getting ideas.”
“This event was very worthwhile”
“This spiked my imagination and creativity of possible ideas at my own center.”
This event was free to YAAEYC members.

Early Childhood Action Day
Early Action Day will soon be here! On June 8, 2010, gather with professionals from all over the
state to spread the message of the importance of early education.

Your legislators need to hear from you about the importance of investing in quality early
childhood education.
Come tell your story about:
 the CHILDREN and the difference that a quality early education program makes in their
lives,
 the TEACHERS and the critical role their skills and expertise play in a quality program,
 the ongoing CHALLENGES of waiting lists, turnover, inadequate support, unmet needs,
 the SUCCESSES that investing in quality produces for children and communities, now
and into the future.

Join local professionals in meetings with Legislators! If you can not get out of the classroom or of-
fice that day, please send art work or letters from families highlighting the importance of our pro-
grams to your legislator.

At 1:00pm there will be a rally on the capitol steps calling all to raise awareness of critical programs.
This year, there will be an evening banquet to recognize excellence in the field. To register go to
www.paquest.org.

If you recognize the importance of great programs such as Keystone Stars, Pre-K Counts, Head
Start, Child Care Works and TEACH, we hope to see you there.

DVAEYC Conference
Barry Muser reports the DVAEYC conference was a
great experience. Besides all of the vendors and the
free stuff, the trainings were great. He at-
tended multiple trainings on advocacy and one on
creating a highly motivated employee. With ECE Ac-
tion Day coming up, this was a great opportunity to
gain some information on advocacy. The advocacy
trainings gave Barry a lot of great ideas to prepare for
legislator meetings. The most valuable training was Reminder
on motivating employees. It helped put things in per-
spective as to why we may or may not get the results
or work quality from our staff that we expect. It gave What a Treasure traveling trunk is avail-
tips on how to motivate staff and build trust with em- able for weekly borrowing through Mar-
ployees. By attending this conference Barry feels that tin Library. Please call Peggy Gardner
he is in a better position to supervise staff more effec- at 846-5300 X280 to reserve a time for
tively then he was before. Barry is better prepared for you. Trunks may be picked up from and
Action Day and the advocacy work to be done there. returned to your closest local library.
He recommends this conference highly to any early
childhood professional.

2010 YAAEYC Conference
This year's YAAEYC Conference will be held on
Saturday, September 19th, 2010 at Penn State York Campus.

The committee is continuing to work hard on this year's conference. We have received many great
proposals from presenters interested in contributing to the conference. The committee will be re-
viewing these proposals and preparing the schedule of trainings to be offered.
This year the committee has decided to "go green". We will not be mailing out brochures
as in years past. The brochure and registration form will be available online at the YAAEYC
website. Those members who have provided their email addresses will be emailed the bro-
chure and registration form.
As always, if you have questions, you may contact Molly Diehl (diehlmol@ycs.k12.pa.us) or
Shanda Opsitos (sopsitos@yahoo.com). We are working hard to make this year's conference the
best yet!!
