BSIT-3A SAQ 1-1

1.
Ethics is the study and philosophy of human conduct with emphasis on the
determination of right and wrong.
Example: Balancing thought whether Euthanasia or mercy-killing is ethical or
unethical.

Ethics as a concept suggests the notion of correct or incorrect practices

relative to various concerns or fields of study.
Example: In a job where you hire your relatives (e.g., cousins) over a more
qualified one.

2. An act becomes ETHICAL when its going beyond legal and doing what is right
even no one is looking. It is about recognizing human rights and doesnt violate
laws or rules. For example, a student doesnt cheat during an examination
because he knew that its not whats supposed to do during exam. Even if
he/she got a low score, still he did what is right. He answered honestly and
resisting the temptations of cheating.

An act is UNETHICAL when it is against the law or rules, violating certain rights
and falls under any forms of illegality like cheating, plagiarism, lying and so on.
For example, copying the work or changing the wording in anothers idea and
presenting it as your own without crediting or recognizing the original creator.

3. NURSING ETHICS

Ethical dilemmas are an inherent part of the nursing profession. Regardless of

their area of practice or accreditation, nurses face a multiple ethical dilemmas
every day. Ethical conflict themes underlying the specialty areas included:
differences in the definition of adequacy of care among professionals, the
institution and society; differences in the philosophical orientations of nurses,
physicians and other health professionals involved in patient care; a lack of
respect for the knowledge and expertise of nurses in specialty practice; and
difficulty in carrying out the nurses advocacy role for patients.

4. If given the opportunity to formulate at least three ethical norms to govern

computing, it would be:
1. Thou shalt not use computer technology to spread misinformation. The
spread of information has become viral today, because of the Internet.
Misleading or giving wrong information can hurt people or organizations. It
loses credibility and causes trust issues.

2. Thou shalt not use someone else's computer resources unless authorized
to. Accessing data that you are not authorized to access or gaining access is
without consent unethical. Privacy will always be applied to such resources
and were not supposed to get exposed in such ways .

3. Thou shalt not use computer communication in wrong ways. While

communicating over the Internet, one should treat others with respect. The
communication etiquette we follow in the real world applies to
communication over computers as well. One should be courteous while
communicating over the web and should respect others.

CASE STUDY NO. 1

Rona belongs to community A where no law pohibits the reproduction (without

permission of the owner) and trading of intellectual property like computer
software, and the like. Jose, on the other hand, belongs to community B where
a law on infringement of intellectual property rights is being enforced. One
day, Rona visits Jose in his home. Unaware of community Bs law in intellectual
property, Rona copies computer software designed by Jose without the latters
consent and even reproduces the same in voluminous quantity (with the
intention to sell the material in community A). As expected, Jose gets angry
with Rona and files a case against her for transgressing the law of community
B. The case is to be tried on neutral territory, with you assigned as judged.
What would be your judgment? Support your position using any of the
definitions of ethics given.

Being assigned as a judge, for me an act can be judged ethical or unethical if it

abide to the laws of both man and God. In this case, given that Rona is unaware
about the laws being enforced in the community B (to which Jose belongs) and
she intentionally copied the design without the consent of the owner and for her
intention is to reproduce and sell the same design to her community. That act is
obviously unethical. Rona, in the first place should have known first her
limitations as a visitor, thus, familiarize the rules or laws enforced on certain
community. And most people are familiar with this phrase or maxim Ignorance
of the law excuses no man. For me, what Jose did is just and right to punish
those who break the laws. Any act of copying anothers work or idea is
considered illegal act, it does violate the law. In this case, Rona is executing an
immoral act against the copyright/ intellectual property right law under the laws
of man and stealing under the laws of God. And as a formal definition of ethics
for this study, Ethics deals with the basic principles of right action especially
with reference to a particular person, profession, and others.

BSIT-3A PREPARATION: CASE STUDY

In a country where abortion is legal, Teresa, a Grade 11 student, got pregnant

and wanted to abort her baby because she is only a teenager. She knew that
her parents would get angry and disappointed at her. Surely they would tell her
to stop from her studies, which shes really afraid of. In great despair she
bought a pill which could possibly help her remove the baby out from her
womb. But as a Christian, she is really afraid that she will be violating the law
of God (Thou shall not kill).
