Fire Point

Is the temperature at which if fuel is heated to give off sufficient vapors so it can continue to
burn for more than 5 seconds.

Flash Point

Is a temperature and the property of a volatile lubricant/fuel which suggests when volatile
lubricant/fuel gives off sufficient vapor when heated, it will start ignite for a moment but not
lasts more than few seconds.

It requires ignition source whereas auto-ignition temperatures does not require source of heat. T
also depends on the vapor pressure of that lubricant/fuel and it increases as temperature of
fuel/lubricant increases.

Importance/Application of FLASH POINT and FIRE POINT

In many engineering applications, fuels are used for getting thermal energy by combustion of
fuel. For example, in oil fired furnace, oil is ignited and heat is used for heating the metals to
alter their properties. Fuel selection is one of the most important part. Use and select fuel based
on its properties like calorific value, density, viscosity, specific heat and flash/fire point.

By knowing the value temperature at which fuel catches fire, one can store the fuel and transport
it accordingly. This is why knowing the petrol and diesels flash point and fire point, every petrol
pump wants the petrol and diesel to be stored at underground. Thus, flash point and fire point
help in determining the nature of fuels flammability. Lower value of flash point means fuel is
highly flammable.
Dropping Point

Is an indicator of the heat resistance of grease. As grease temperature rises, penetration

increases until the grease liquefies and the desired consistency is lost. Dropping point is the
temperature at which a grease becomes fluid enough to drip. It indicates the upper
temperature limit at which a grease retains its structure, not the maximum temperature at
which a grease may be used.

Importance/Application of Dropping Point

It is useful to assist in identifying the grease as to type and for establishing and maintaining
bench marks of quality control. The results are to be considered to have only limited
significance with respect to service performance because dropping point is static test.

Pour Point

Of a fuel or oil is the lowest temperature at which it will pour when cooled under defined
conditions. In general, the pour point is indicative of the amount of wax in an oil. At low
temperatures, the wax tends to separate, trapping a substantial amount of oil, inhibiting oil
flow and hindering lubrication.

Importance/Application of Pour Point

Are used in most lubricant types, including crankcase engine oils, automatic and power
transmission fluids, automotive gear oils, tractor fluids, hydraulic fluids, and circulating oils.

Viscosity
Is the measure of a substances resistance to motion under an applied force.

Importance/Application of Viscosity
It is also a characteristics of the texture of food. The products viscosity must be measured
and monitored during production to ensure that each batch is consistent and will go through the
product process efficiently.
In choosing the right viscosity, consider how it must flow, or not flow, on a part after applied.
Low-viscosity will flow more readily than high-viscosity ones, so if you want to stay exactly
where you put it after dispensing rather than spread out, a high viscosity is ideal.
