The Lesson I Learned 30 Years Ago

“The wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just” (Proverbs 13:22).

Lessons from the Old Testament

Remember the great Old Testament superpower called Egypt? It had more gold and silver than any other nation on
the planet. Moses was in exile in the desert while the children of Israel toiled in slavery. Everything kept going as it
had been for years, but suddenly things began to change.

God spoke to Moses from a burning bush and told him to go back to Egypt. Not only did God promise to deliver His
children from slavery, but He said to them, “When you leave you will not go empty-handed” (Exodus 3:21, NIV).

God did exactly as He promised. That was just one of the six times God caused a mighty wealth transfer. He did it
for Abraham (Genesis 12:10—13:2), Isaac (Genesis 26:1, 12-14, 16), Jacob (Genesis 31:6-9), Joseph (Genesis
41:39-44), the children of Israel (Exodus 12:34-36), and Solomon, who was the richest man on planet earth (1 Kings
10:23).

And guess who is next in line?

You (Job 27:13-17)!

Let’s talk about the children of Israel. Why did God bless Israel so much?
More importantly, what did He ask of them?

Right before the supernatural wealth transfer, God first asked them for an
offering. He told them that every family needed to bring a lamb to sacrifice.
Then, after the sacrifice and after the blood was placed over the door and on
the doorposts, God told them to go and receive the wealth of the Egyptians.

The offering triggered the harvest!

What does that mean for you?

The Lesson That Changed My Life

If we don’t obey the Word of God today, tomorrow we will lose. I had to learn this lesson the hard way many years
ago.

During the 1970s I was in desperate need. My ministry, based in Toronto, Canada, was $200,000 in debt. I was
about to get married, so I went down to Florida. Pastor Roy Harthern, the man who was going to be my father-in-
law, talked to me about my financial situation, then he gave me a word from God: “The reason you’re in debt,
Benny, is because you’re not a giver!”

I started to argue—“Wait a minute…”

He simply looked me in the eyes and asked, “How much do you give?”

“Well,” I said, “that’s between God and me.”

He paused for a moment and then firmly said, “You’re about to become my son-in-law. It’s between God, you—and
me! I want to make sure that the husband of my daughter is a giver, or you can’t marry her. Now, how much do you
give?”

I wasn’t happy with him, but I told him that my giving amount varied from week to week.

And that’s when he told me the truth that would change my understanding forever.

He said: “You are an emotional giver—you give when you feel good and you don’t when you feel bad.” He
continued, “Emotional giving is cursed by God.”

And I knew he was right.

He then asked, “How long have you been saved?”

His question stunned me and I wondered, what does that have to do with it? It was 1979 as we spoke, and I told him
I received Jesus Christ into my heart in 1972.

“Do you know what the Bible says?” he asked. “It says that you owe God twenty percent as a penalty.”

“What?” I exclaimed. I had never heard of such a thing.

“You’ve been giving emotionally,” he continued, “and emotional giving is dismissed as if it never happened. Now,
if you want to get out of debt, you must begin to obey God’s Word.”

“But,” I protested, “I have bills to pay.”

He then answered with words that shook me to my core, “Pay God’s bills and then He will pay yours!” He said,
“You go back to Canada and pay what you owe God first, and He will take care of what you owe others.”

“Get the checkbook out!”

It felt like I had just received the worst news I could have expected as I headed back to Canada. Little did I know
that what I had just heard would be the best news imaginable.

I called my secretary in and said, “Marian, get the checkbook out!”

She was very nervous. “For what?”

I said, “I’m going to obey God!” I began telling her to write a check for $1,000 to this ministry, and another $1,000
to that ministry, and so on. We had $20,000 in the bank, but we owed $200,000. Still I told her to send out twenty
checks for $1,000 each.
My secretary got so scared that after she finished talking with me, she picked up the phone and called my board of
directors. All nine members of the board quickly showed up with our ministry’s lawyer.

“What are you doing?” they demanded.

“I’m just paying God’s bills!”

“Benny,” one of them said, “you have bills to pay. You’re going to go bankrupt doing this.”

“Well,” I said firmly, “God expects me to pay His bills first.”

Seven of the board members resigned that day, saying, “We don’t want to be part of a bankrupt ministry and a crazy
man.” Two of them stayed with me.

Of the two remaining, one of the men’s lower lip began to quiver, “Are you sure God spoke to you?” he asked.

“Yes!” I said with absolute confidence.

“Well, if God spoke to you, I’ll stick with you.”

Those poor men were scared to death as I emptied the bank account. That was Wednesday. I went home and stayed
there until Sunday.

My Last Ten Cents

I drove my two-door Pontiac, white with a red top, to church. I had exactly ten cents in my pocket and nothing in my
bank account. When they passed the offering plate, wouldn’t you know it? God told me to give the ten cents I had
left!

I was stunned!

“You must be kidding, Lord!” I said silently. “I just gave You thousands of dollars on Wednesday, and now You
want me to give You my last ten cents?”

I fought against it as the offering plate approached, but I knew it was His voice. By the time I placed the ten cents in
the plate, I was actually trembling. My hands would hardly let go of the money. It was such a small amount of
money, but it represented the fact that now I had absolutely nothing. I was sick to my stomach. And I even had no
gas in my Pontiac’s tank.

By Monday morning I hated going into the office. I was miserable. When I got there, Marian was as gloomy as I
was. She told me there was a letter from a fellow evangelist on my desk. This news made me even gloomier, for this
letter was from an evangelist who didn’t like me. He had told me so to my face—“I don’t like you.” And I had told
him, “I don’t like you, either!”

So I picked up the letter, thinking he was going to tell me off in writing. It was the only letter I had, so I figured I
might as well get it over with. Imagine my surprise when I opened it and saw a check for $1,000!

His letter said, “The Lord spoke to me today to send this to you. I don’t know why, but I’m just obeying Him.”

The postmark showed that it had been mailed on Wednesday, the same day I obeyed God.
Completely Out of Debt!
That was just the beginning. We started receiving check after check. Each letter said pretty much the same thing:
“The Lord told me to send this to you.”

We were completely out of debt in six months!

I am telling you that the God we serve is a God of miracles. I am still doing what I am doing today because I was
obedient so long ago, even when it cost me everything—down to my last ten cents!

I am going to ask you to do something today that can change your life, just as it changed mine. This could be a
precious moment for you because my heart is filled with faith for you and your family. My faith is strong that God
wants to bring you out of the financial pressure you are under. God gave me a mighty miracle nearly 30 years ago,
and I have faith that the same miracle will happen for you today.

Your Challenge

In the same way that I sowed $1,000 into 20 ministries, I am asking you sow $1,000 as a seed of faith into what God
is doing through this ministry.

I know you may have other plans for that $1,000, but obey God, for He has a divine destiny for that seed. And as
you sow it into the Lord’s work, He will get you out of your bondage.

All you have to do is obey Him.

the God we serve will surely do it!
