To: Academic Deans, Vice and Associate Deans with Responsibility for Graduate Programs
As part of USCs on-going commitment to PhD student support, the graduate school is pleased to announce
a pilot program offering a limited number of USC Graduate School Summer Research and Writing Grants
at $5,000 each. The goal of these grants is to increase the amount of summer support that students have for
their work toward the PhD in fields where research assistantships are generally unavailable. A number of
students, faculty, staff, and deans contributed to the formulation of this program, and I am grateful for their
help and their vision.
Students are eligible to receive one USC Graduate School Summer Research and Writing Grant during their
time at USC. They must be making good and timely progress toward their degree, and must have completed
at least two years of study toward the PhD by May of the given year.
Each PhD program may nominate two candidates. The process is like the process for advanced fellowship
nominations. The programs designated nominator will submit materials supplied by the student and the
department chair to the graduate school through an online portal.
A copy of the signature page below signed by the programs DGS or the students dissertation
advisor, the department chair, and the dean or deans proxy affirming that the student is making
good and timely progress to the degree.
The deadline for nomination will be Friday, March 31, at 12:00 noon. Starting on Monday March 20,
designated program nominators will be able to upload the two applications to the graduate school via the
following link: https://app.wizehive.com/apps/GSSummerGrant. Programs and students will be notified by
mid April.
