whichactivatestheprocessofcreation,sustainstheuniverseandthensubsequentlydestroysit.Itisnotonly
butalsothematerialmatrixitselfinwhichthemanifestworldisgroundedandinthatsenseSaktiisatoncelat
staticandkinetic.Itisthemanifestationoftheunmanifest,greatvoidoftheNirgunaBrahmanasthefivegros
air,fire,waterandearth,thetriptychsofheat,water,foodred,whiteandblackthesattva,rajasandtamas
thetwentyfourtattvas.Saktiisspeechassabdbrahman,themasculineaspurusaandtheallpervadingOmn
consciousness.
TheenigmaofSaktimaybecontemplatedatvariouslevels.ItisextolledmostfrequentlyastheDivineFemin
personaoftheGreatGoddesswhodisplaysherdimensionsinavariegatedmazeofdeificincarnations.The
MarkandeyaPuranadepictsthecreative,sustaininganddestructiveaspectsofSaktiinatrinityofdeities:the
gloryofMahalakshmi,thepristine,moonlit,refinementofMahasarasvatiandthedark,carnalimageofthesku
Thesesublime,gentleandfuriousaspectsofSakti,alsoknownasthegoddessesVacSaraswati,RatriandS
scriptures,arethemarkersofenergyinHinduism.Betweenthesethreenodalities,amultitudeofmicrodimens
playedoutasthebenevolentnurturer,theuniversalmother,theprotector,therefuge,thebountiful,theprocre
