Motorskills:Dribbling,catching,passing,andshooting.

Dribbling

Dribblingisatechniqueusedtoadvancetheballforwardandbackwardbyonepersonatatime.
Dribblingisjustlikeabasketballdribblebutaplayercanmovethreestepsaftertheballhasbeenpicked
up.

Keyteachingpoints:

Keepheadup,beabletodribblewitheitherhand.
Protecttheballwiththebodyandopenhandinfront.
Dribblewithfingertipsandwrist,pushtheballnotslap
Dribblewithrighthandwhengoingright,lefthandwhengoingleft

Catching

Anaccuratethrowwillresultinaaccuratecatch.Catchingisusedtoreceiveapassimmediately
fromwhentheballisstillinmotion.Thisallowstheplayercatchingtheballtoquicklymaintaincontrol
ofthemovingball.

Keyteachingpoints:

Keepeyeonballthewholetimeitiscoming
Catchballwithtwohandswheneverpossible,fingertipsspread
Elbowsflexed,bodyrelaxed,whilemeetingthepasstoabsorbimpactofball
Aftercatchingthepass,theplayershouldbereadytodribble,pass,orshoot.

Passing

Passingisthemostimportantskillinteamhandball.Itallowsteamstoadvancetheballquickly
tosetupscoringopportunities.Thefundamentalsaresimilartothoseinbasketball.

Keyteachingpoints:

Whenmakingthethrowshiftbodyweightfrombacktofrontfoot
Stepforwardwiththelegoppositeofthethrowingarm
Snapthewristuponthereleaseoftheball,usingfingertipstocontrolthepath
oftheball
Selecttherightpassfortherightsituation

Shortdistancepasses:

Thebouncepass:Ballshouldbethrownsoitbouncesonthegroundatleast3feetin
frontofthereceiver.

Theclosehandoff:Handingtheballtoateammateinclosesituations,usuallyaround
thegoal.

Thehookpass:Apassthatgoesovertheheadofthedefender.Thispassisjustlikeshot
ahookshotinbasketball.Theballisreleasedashighintotheairaspossibleduringajump.

Theshovelpass:Tossingtheballunderhandtoateammate

Theoverheadpass:Primarilyusedwhenaplayeristhrowingtheballbackinifitwent
outofboundsandisusuallydonebyusingtwohands.Bringtheballovertheheadtomakethe
throw.

Longdistancepasses:

Thegroundpass(roller):Whennootherpassinglaneisopenbetweenteammatesthe
playermightrolltheballontheground.Agroundpasscanalsobemadewhenthereisa
scramblefortheballonthefloorandaquickpasstoateammateisneeded.

Thejumppass:Jumpingtoseeaboveadefendersheadandmakingashoulderpassor
baseballthrowatthepeakofthejump.

Theshoulderpass(baseball):Throwingtheballlikeabaseball.Theonlydifferenceis
thattheplayerisnotactuallygrippingtheball.Theplayermustlettheballrestinthehandwith
aflexedwristandthefingertipsmustcoverasthemuchofthesurfaceoftheballaspossible.

Thesidearmpass:Similartoashoulderpassbutinsteadtheballisbroughtbacktothe
sideofthebodyandforwardthenreleased.

Shooting

Shootingisthemaintechniqueforattackingthegoalforascoreinteamhandball.Itrequires
accuracy,andtherightamountofpowertobesuccessful.Teamsmustbepatientinwaitingforthe
perfectopportunitytoshootandscore.

Keyteachingpoints:

Theshootermusthaveagoodshootingangle,wheretheycanaimforthemost
vulnerablespacesinthegoal:thehighandlowcorners
Themomentumoftheshootershouldalwaysbeforward/perpendiculartothe
goal
Shoulderpassisthemostcommonshootingtechnique
Theballisheldbehindtheheadtohideitfromthegoalie
Thenonshootingarmisinfrontofthebodytomaintainbalance

Theshotisreleasedwithasnapofthewristandrightoffthefingertipsfor
followthrough.

Specificshootingtechniques:

The jump shot: The use of shoulder throws at the height of a jump to get ball over
defenders.Bodymomentumisalldirectedtowardthegoal.

Thediveshot:Thisshotinvolvesdivingtowardthegoalandreleasingtheballatthelast
possiblesecondtowardsthemouthofthegoal.

The underhand shot: The side arm throw is used in this motion. The right handed
throwerturnstheleftsideofthebodytowardthegoal.Forincreasedpower,acrossoverstepis
used with the push off coming from the rear foot. This shot has a low trajectory with a
continuousfollowthrough.

TheReverseShot:Thisshotisusedtofakeoutthedefenderinfrontoftheplayerwhois
blockingtheshootinglane.Astrongfakeismadetoonesideofthedefenderliketheplayeris
goingtoshootaroundthem.Thenthehandwiththeballinit,alongwiththatsamefootcrosses
overbodytotheothersidetomakeabackhandthrow.

Thesidethrow(twister):Thisshotisjustlikeareverseshotbutwithoutthefaketoone
side.Thisshotisusuallydonewhentheplayerisclosertothegoalareabecauseitisarelatively
weakone.

Thelobshot:Thisshotisusedwhenthegoaliehastocomeouttochallengetheplayers
shotandtheplayerjustlobstheballoverthegoalieintothegoal.Themostimportantaspectof
thisshotisthetiming.

The penalty shot: A throw that is taken at the 23 foot line away from the goal. The
goalie can move within only 10 feet of the penalty line and the penalty shooter cannot move
theirfeetortouchthelineuntiltheballisthrown.Theballcannotbethrownuntilthereferee
blowsthewhistle,atthatpointtheshooterhasonly3secondstoshoot.Theshoulderandside
throwarethemostcommonshootingtechniquesforpenaltyshots.

DrillsandLeadupActivities

Dribbling

1.DribbleTag(Byle,2004,p.113)

Eachplayerhasaball.Thedesignatedareaishalfcourtonthebasketballcourt.One
playeristheitplayer,theyhaveabasketballandapoolnoodle.Allotherstudentsdribblearoundthe
halfcourtandtrynottogettaggedbythenoodle,iftheydogettaggedtheyareitandtheygetthe
noodle.

2.DribbleRelay(Clanton,1997,p.39)

Thereare2teams.Bothteamsmakealine1520metersawayfromawall.Thewall
hasa1metersquareboxtapedoutonitforeachline.Sixmetersfromthewallisatapedlineparallel

tothewallonthefloor.Thefirstplayeroneachteamdribblestothe6meterline,shootsatthewall
target,retrievesthereboundoftheshot,anddribblesbacktothenextplayerinline.Firstteamtohit
thetargetthreetimes,wins.

Passing(BounceandShoulder)andCatching

1.PartnerPassingonthemove(Wissel,2004,p.26)

Eachstudentwillhaveapartnerandoneballperpartnergroup.Eachpartnergroupwill
startacrossfromeachother(10ft)andsidesteptotheothersideofthecourt.Usingtheshoulderpass
first,thenthebouncepasswhencomingback.

2.BullintheRing(Wissel,2004,p.35)

Therearefiveplayersonoffenseandoneondefense.Thefiveareontheoutside
makingacirclearoundtheonedefender.Thedefenderisthebullinringthattriestodeflectthepasses
fromplayertoplayeraroundthecircle.

3.Passanddefend(Wissel,2004,p.34)

Therearetwolinesabout12ftapartfacingeachother.Thefirstplayerinoneofthe
lineshasaballandcanmaketwodribbles,makesabounceorshoulderpasstotheplayerthatisfacing
themintheotherline.Oncethepassismadethatplayerfollowstheirpassanddefendstheplayer
tryingtomakeapasstotheotherline.

Shooting(ShoulderandJumpshot)

1.Setshotpractice(Clanton,1997,p.53)

Thegoalshapeistapedontoawall,aswellas4cornerboxesinthegoal.Theplayers
willstand12metersawayfromthegoal,runuptothe9metermarkandshoot.Theywillpracticeboth
theshoulderandjumpshot.

2.Catch,threesteps,thenjumpshot(Clanton,1997,p.55)

Theplayerwillreceiveapassfromateammateatthepointbetweenhalfcourtandthe
3ptline.Thatplayerwillthentakethreestepstowardthe3ptline,thenexecuteajumpshot.

3.HalfCourt3vs.2(Clanton,1997,p.59)

Thecourtissplitinhalf,sothiswaytheplayersareusingonlyonesideofthecourt,thus
theywillhavetomakebettershotselectionsintheirattack.Objectistofindtheopenplayerwiththe
bestshotselection.

WarmUp/FitnessActivityDescriptions

SwampMonster(Bylp.22)

Tentofifteengymnasticmatsarespreadoutinadesignatedarea,farapartenoughtowhere

thestudentscanmovebetweenthem.Whenthemusicbegins,thestudentswillmovewitha

specificlocomotorpatternthroughoutthematswithouttouchingthem.Ifastudentlosestheir

balanceandtouchesamatthentheyhavetodoashortexerciseonthatmattogetfree(10

pushups,10jumpingjacks,etc.).Oncethemusicstopstheyallhavetotryandgetontoamat

bythemselves.

ContinuousScooterTag(Bylp.26)

Thereisonescooterperplayer(playerslyingontheirstomachs).Designateonecolorofscooter

tobeit.Ifanittagsaplayerfromtheotherteam,thentheyswitchscootersandtheplayer

whogottaggedbecomestheit.Duringtheexchange,thoseplayerscannotgettagged,and

thenewitcannottagthatsamepersonrightafter.Playcontinuesforadesignatedtime.

FrontoftheClass(Bylp.17)

Thereisadesignatedsquareareamadebyconesorthelinesonabasketballcourt.The

studentslineupinasinglefilelineparalleltoononesideofthesquare.Thestudentsbegin

joggingaroundthesquarestillintheline.Thestudentinthebackofthelinebreaksofffromthe

lineandrunstothefront,whiletheentirelineisstillmoving.Oncethatstudentmakesittothe

frontandcontinuesjoggingwiththeentireline,thenextpersoninthebackdoesthesame

thing.Onceeveryonegetsbacktotheiroriginalpositions,startFrontoftheClass:Weave.

EverybodysItFrozenTag(Bylp.35)

Playersspreadoutinadesignatedarea.TwoplayersareitandwhentheteachersaysGothe

gamebegins.Ifaplayeristaggedbytheitthentheirfeetbecomefrozentotheground.As

theitsarerunningaroundfreezingplayersandtheygettaggedbyafrozenplayerinpassing,

thentheitbecomesfrozenandthepersonwhowasfrozenbecomestheit.

ExerciseStations(fromclass)

Make6stationsaroundthegymandhaveadesignatedexerciseforeachstation.Stations1:

Anytypeoflegstretch.Station2:JumpingJacksorlinejumping.Station3:Crabwalkdown,

bearcrawlback(10feet).Station4:JumpRope.Station5:Torsoandupperbodystretch.

Station6:20situps,10pussups.Eachstationwilllast2minuteslong.Thiswarmupis

repeatedeveryMonday.

Popcorn(Bylp.20)

Haveabinofbeanbagsinthecentercircleofthebasketballcourt.Oneplayerisinthecircle

nexttothebin(thepopcornmaker).Allotherplayersareontheoutsideofthecircleand

cannotgoinsidethecircleatanytime.Theobjectofthegameisforthepopcornmakerto

emptyoutthebinbythrowingoutonlyonebeanbagatatimeonerightaftertheother.This

personmustthrowthebagsoutsidethecirclebutkeepthemwithinthebasketballcourt.All

theothersmusttrytokeepthebinasfullastheycanbylightlytossingthebagsthatthe

popcornmakerthrowsout.Ifthepopcornmakergetstiredoremptiesoutthebinforevena

second,thendesignateanewpopcornmaker.

LineTag(fromclass)

Everyplayermustmoveonanylineonthebasketballcourt.Theycannotjumpfromlinetoline.

Twoplayersaredesignatedtobeitandtheycanonlymoveonthelinesaswell.Ifaplayeris

taggedthentheymustjogoffofthecourtanddoashortexercise(12jumpingjacks,12situps,

etc.).Oncetheyaredonetheycanmovebackontoalineandcontinue.

ExerciseRelay(Bylp.46)

Splitgroupupinto24teamsdependingonthesizeofthegroup.Eachgroupformsasinglefile

line.10metersinfrontofeachgroupslineisaspotmarkedwheretheexercisetakesplace.

Thefirstpersoninthelinewillmovetothespotusinganassignedlocomotormovement

pattern,andthenwillchooseanexercisefromthelistthatislocatedatthespot.Thatperson

willdo10repsoftheexercise,therestoftheteamwilljoinhimintheexercise.Oncetheten

repsarecompletedthatpersonmovebacktotheendofthelineandthenextpersoninline

goestothespottodo10repsofadifferentexercise.Onceeveryonegoestothespotandthe

lastpersonrunsbacktothegroupandeveryonesitsdown,thatteamwinstherelay.

CustodianRelay(Bylp.44)

Thestudentswillbesplitinto24teamsdependingonthenumber.Eachteamwillhavea

towel.Eachteamwillstartatthebaselineofthebasketballcourt.Thefirstpersoninlinewill

havethetowelonthegroundandpushitwithbothhandstohalfcourtandback.Oncethat

persongetsbackthenextpersoninlinewilldothesamething.Onceeveryonegoesandisback

totheline,theymustallsitinacirclewiththetowelinthemiddletocompletetherelay.The

firstgrouptodothisisthewinner.

Alltheplayersarespreadoutinthedesignatedarea.Eachplayerhasabeanbagontheirhead

andbalancemustbemaintainedthroughoutthegame.Threeplayersareitandtheyhavebean

bagsontheirheadsaswell.Ifaplayeristaggedtheymustputtheirbeanbagonthefloorand

freezeinthatspot.Togetunfrozen,anotherplayermustcomeovertothemandcarefullyhand

themtheirbeanbagfromoffthefloorwithouttheirownbeanbagfallingoff.Iftheirbeanbag

fallsoffwhiletheyaretryingtounfreezeaclassmate,thentheymustfreezeinthatspotand

leavetheirbagonthefloor.Onceaplayergetstheirbagbackintheirhands,theycanputit

backontheirheadandcontinuemoving.

CircleRelay(Bylp.38)

Thegroupissplitupintoequalteams.Eachgroupmakesacirclewheretheyareallarmslength

apart.Designateplayeroneineachcircleandthencountoffinorder.Whentherelaystarts,

player1willrunaroundtheentirecircleandwhentheygettoplayer2,player2willdothe

samething(playeronewilltakeplayertwosspot).Whentherelaygetsbackaroundtoplayer

oneandeveryonehasgone,therelaywillstartoverwith2leggedhopping.Oncethegroupis

finishedgoingaroundforthatsecondtime,theymustallsitdowntowintherelay.

ContinuousBritishBulldog(Bylp.30)

Thebasketballcourtwillbethedesignatedarea.Twoplayersareitandstandinthemiddleof

thecourt.Everyoneelseisstandingonthebaseline.WhentheitsyellBritishBulldog!

everyoneonethebaselinetriestoruntotheotherbaselinewithoutgettingtagged.Ifaplayer

istaggedthentheybecomeanotherit.Theplayersonthebaselinecanbechosenbythe

coloroftheirclothes,eyes,and/orhairbytheits.

Eachplayerhasaball.Thedesignatedareaishalfcourtonthebasketballcourt.Oneplayeris

theitplayer,theyhaveabasketballandapoolnoodle.Allotherstudentsdribblearoundthe

halfcourtandtrynottogettaggedbythenoodle,iftheydogettaggedtheyareitandtheyget

thenoodle.Ifaplayerslosestheirballoutofboundsthentheyhavetodo12ballslaps,then

theycangetbackintothegame.
