2.2 Tools
The toolkits listed in Table 1 are required to upgrade the office from
internal routing to external routing for Succession Solutions, if the call
server is to be equipped with a Universal Signaling Point (USP).

The toolkits may not be needed if the external router hardware is

supplied by the customer or engineered in the job. These tool kits supply
specific paddleboards. Other types of paddleboards may also be used if
the routers are supplied by the customer or engineered in the job. See
Section Figure 1 on page 11 for details.

The toolkits are not ordered for TDM offices permanently upgrading to
external routing. Permanent LIU7s are provisioned for TDM offices
going to external routing.

Each kit contains two external routers. There are 2 types of kits: 8M
Version and 32M version. The 8M version has DS0 interface and the
32M version has V.35 interface. The 8M External Router consists of
NTEX22BA, NT9X76AA, and NT9X78DA. The 32M External Router
consists of NTEX22CA, NT9X76AA, and NT9X77AB. Each office
will require between 2- 8 external routers. The type and quantity of
external routers should be determined by the job engineer.

3.0 Precautions and Preparations

3.1 Precautions

Caution:
Check with the customer about existing CCS7 service.
This method should be used with great care in an office that
has working CCS7. Failing to do so can cause degradation to
service on existing CCS7 links.

1. Observe all local general safety precautions against personal injury and
equipment damage.
2. Follow all Electro-Static Discharge prevention practices when handling
any hardware. Refer to Method 03-9051, Event 01 - Planning - DMS
Physical Handbook.
3. Follow standard trouble shooting procedures, contacting the next level
of support for assistance when required.
4. Refer to Appendix A LIU7 External Router Activation (Backout) if
there a service degradation and a backout to internal routing is required.

3.2 Preparations
1. It is strongly recommended that this method be read in its entirety before
starting the operations presented herein.
2. Prior to starting operations covered by this method, the tools and
equipment should be arranged at the work location to minimize fatigue.
3. The K020166 or K020315 toolkit(s) must be ordered if temporary
LIU7s are required to upgrade the office to external routing prior to
completing the cutover to the USP for Succession Solutions.
4. Perform this method over two maintenance periods that are separated by
at least 24 hours. The break between the procedures allows time for the
hardware and software to soak.
Maintenance Window 1 (Procedure 1, Procedure 2)
Maintenance Window 2 (Procedure 3)
5. Contact GTAC or next level of support within 24 hours of performing
procedure 2 and procedure 3 to obtain the latest TOOLSUP password,

4.0 Procedure
4.1 Overview
The procedure for activating LIU7 external routing consists of the
following general steps.
Datafill LIU7 routers
Activate LIU7 routers and external routing
Wait 24 hours
Remove MTP routing databases from all DTCs or PDTCs, SPMs,
and/or GWCs using the C7RTR tool.

You can back out of the procedure for activating LIU7 external routing
at any time.

4.2 External Routing Introduction

This method provides the procedures required to activate (LIU7)
external routing. LIU7 external routing transfers Message Transfer Part
(MTP) routing functions from the Digital Trunk Controllers (DTC),
PCM30 Digital Trunk Controllers (PDTC), Spectrum Peripheral
Modules (SPM), and/or Gateway Controllers (GWC) to LIU7 routers
that perform only MTP routing functions.

Before the installation of LIU7 external routing, MTP routing is

performed by every DTC, PDTC, SPM, and/or GWC in an office. An
MTP routing database is stored on each DTC, PDTC, SPM, and/or
GWC. These MTP routing databases are dynamically maintained by the
CM and periodically downloaded to the DTCs, PDTCs, SPMs, and/or
GWCs. The process of downloading the MTP routing databases from
the CM to the DTCs, PDTCs, SPMs, and/or GWCs requires a large
amount of bandwidth.

LIU7 external routing transfers the task of MTP routing from DTCs,
PDTCs, SPMs, and/or GWCs to LIU7s that are dedicated to the task of
performing routing functions. These LIU7s are called LIU7 external
routers. When LIU7 external routing is active, DTCs, PDTCs, SPMs,
and/or GWCs deliver MTP messages to the LIU7 external routers. This
transfer of routing functions eliminates the need to download the MTP
routing databases from the CM to the DTCs, PDTCs, SPMs, and/or
GWCs, and thereby reduces the amount of bandwidth required for
routing functions.

The exact number of LIU7 external routers required depends on

individual office capacity.

8 / LIU7 External Routing

May 4, 2007 Method 65-0723

4.3 Hardware Requirements

Between two and eight dedicated LIU7s are required to activate LIU7
external routing. Half of all routers in the office must be datafilled and
in service before LIU7 external routing is activated. If the office
contains only two LIU7 routers, both must be datafilled and in service.

Engineering will determine the number of external routers the office

requires, using the following formula:

LIU7s = BHCA / MAX BHCA

Where:
LIU7s = the total number of LIU7s needed to become external
routers. This value must be greater than or equal to 2 and less than or
equal to 8.
BHCA = the total busy hour call attempts (BHCA) for the network
element.
MAX BHCA = 90000 per 8-Mbyte LIU7.
250000 per 32-Mbyte LIU7.

For the GSM/UMTS market, the recommended number of external

routers are as follows:

Table 2 Minimum Number of 8-Mbyte External Routers

# ISUP Trunks Using LPP Signalling # of 8-MByte External Routers

0 - 11,250 2

11,250 - 22,500 4

22,500 - 28125 6

28,125 - 45,000 8

# ISUP Trunks Using LPP Signalling # of 32-MByte External Routers

0 - 31,200 2

31,200 - 62,400 4

93,600 - 125,000 8

LIU7 External Routing / 9

Method 65-0723 May 4, 2007

CAUTION:
An insufficient number of in-service LIU7 external routers will
cause a service outage.

Note: The 32-Mbyte LIU7 external router can coexist with the 8-Mbyte
LIU7 external router in the same office. However, any 32-Mbyte
LIU7 external router in service with the 8-Mbyte external routers
also in service, behave as an 8-Mbyte external router. To achieve
the 32-Mbyte router capacity, all 8-Mbyte external routers must
be offline and decommissioned.

All CCS7 links in the office must be based on link peripheral processors
(LPP), FLPPs, or FLIS. LIU7 external routers do not have CCS7
physical links.

If the LIU7 paddleboard is an NT9X77, the CLKCONFG variable must

be set to DCE in table LIUINV.

May 4, 2007 Method 65-0723

4.4 Physical Installation

Consult with the Customer to determine which slots on the LPP/FLPP/
FLIS will be used for LIU7s.

Remove the filler plates from the slots on the LPP/FLPP/FLIS and insert
the LIU7 packs to be used as external routers into the LPP/FLPP/FLIS.
Make note of the pack assignments, these assignments will be required
later in this section.

Nortel recommends that you distribute LIU7 external routers across all
half-shelves of all LPPs/FLPPs/FLISs in the office. Placing the LIU7
external routers on different half-shelves ensures that a single point
failure within the cabinet, such as the loss of power to a half-shelf, will
not bring down all the LIU7 external routers.

Each Link Interface Unit (LIU) is composed of two circuit packs and
one paddleboard. The first circuit pack is the NTEX22 IPF Processor
and F-Bus Interface and is provisioned in an even-numbered slot from
8F to 30F. The second circuit pack is the NT9X76AA STP Signaling
Terminal and is provisioned in the next highest (odd-numbered) slot
(from 9F to 31F). The paddleboard is either an NT9X77AA/AB V.35
Interface, an NT9X78BA Enhanced DS0A Interface, or an NTEX26AA
Channel Bus Interface and is provisioned behind the NT9X76AA (in an
odd-numbered slot from 9R to 31R).

These three cards make up a single Link Interface Unit.

4.4.1 LPP, FLPP Requirements

Add the LIU7 external routers to an LPP, ELPP (Enhanced LPP), or

FLPP by following the order of half-shelves listed below:

A, B, C, D, E, F, A, B

Place one LIU7 on the first half-shelf listed, then continue to the next
half-shelf listed. When you have placed one LIU7 on each of the half-
shelves listed, begin again with the first half-shelf listed. Refer to Figure
2 to determine the location and letter name of each half-shelf.

In an office with two or more LIS shelves, LIUs forming a pair should
be provisioned in opposite halves of different shelves with LIUs being
assigned from the sides towards the middle of each shelf.

4.6 Activate LIU7 External Routing

This section contains the steps for activating LIU7 external routing on
the switch. When this procedure is finished all DTCs, PDTCs, SPMs,
and/or GWCs will route MTP messages to the LIU7 external routers.
The MTP routing databases still exist on and are maintained by the
DTCs, PDTCs, SPMs, and/or GWCs.

CAUTION/WARNING: Ensure that the following activities do

NOT take place while performing procedure 2:
Adding or deleting routesets in table C7RTESET
Busying or returning to service any DTCs, PDTCs, SPMs, GWCs,
or CCS7 LIU7s
Busying or returning any routesets to service

Appendix A LIU7 External Router Activation (Backout)
Should it be necessary to de-activate external routing after the activate
command has been issued, follow the LIU7 Router de-activation
procedure. It is not possible to de-activate C7ROUTERs if:
There are more than 255 routesets
There are more than 140 DTC7s or SPMs
There are more than 58,000 ISUP trunks
Any SPM with SP12 release or lower
CM with TL12 release or lower

It may be necessary to reduce the number of routesets, DTC7s, and/or

ISUP trunks to the above numbers prior to de-activating.
