Research Proposal

From the sources gathered, I propose to research if the negatives of shark fin soup
outweigh the cultural backing it has maintained for the past thousand years. Based on most
research, there appeared to be one clear conclusion; shark fin soup tended to have more negative
effects on quality of life than positive. Not only did it cause detrimental destruction to the sharks
themselves, but evidence supports causation of neurodegenerative diseases in its human
consumers. The counterargument to these propositions is that it is rich in historical meaning and
culture. Almost every single source I used stated that the cultural tradition has died out, and new
environmental laws should be implemented to protect the species. Through my paper I plan to
expose the multifaceted negatives behind consuming shark fin soup, as well as the level of
importance culture plays in said issue.

SLO Connection

For this SLO the composing process played a huge factor in the proposal. In order to
understandably create an idea of what I would like to write about I needed to brainstorm ideas. In
this brainstorming process new ideas and questions needed to present themself in order to
coherently evaluate my research. This assignment also used rhetorical knowledge. In able to
write my proposal I needed to be able to understand the backbone of all the sources I obtained.
