EXAMPLE LETTER TO YOUR SENATOR

February 23, 2017

The Honorable Bob Casey

393 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Senator Casey,

My name is Ms. Shea and I reside in Harrisburg, PA. As your constituent, I strongly encourage you to
create legislation that can help ease the burden of student debt. Such actions include establishing a
program to refinance both federal and private loans, expanding and protecting repayment options, and
restoring bankruptcy options.

Much like so many of my peers, I am so overwhelmed by the weight of my student loans. Many in our
generation wake up every morning and realize that we will never be able to afford a car, a home, health
insurance, or even to start a family.

Since 1978 college tuition has skyrocketed over 900% while, simultaneously, funding for grants continue
to be slashed forcing students to take out more and more loans. With few high paying jobs in the
economy, paying off the immense cost of college stops many in my generation from building a better
future.

At least 1 out of 5 students currently default on their loans, and 60% of employers now use credit checks
as part of the hiring process. This results in devastating consequences, including: high fees and penalties,
higher interest rates, destroyed credit ratings, possible suspension of drivers licenses, possible suspension
of professional licenses, and more.

I appreciate your help and ask that you please send me a response letting me know if you are able to pass
a Bill that would help ease the burdens of student debt.

Thank you for your time and considering my request.

Sincerely,

Ms. Shea
