Cetasika

Ekuppdanirodh ca, eklambanavatthuk;

Cetoyutt dvipasa, dhamm cetasikmat

Cetasika are the phenomenon that occur and cease together with consciousness, have the
same object and base as consciousness. These 52 states arise in mind and assist
consciousness by performing more specific tasks in the act of cognition. They are
functionally interdependent, but consciousness is regard as primary because mental factors
depend on consciousness.

Cetasika is classified into 3 groups

1. Aasamna group has 13 mental factors

2. Akusala group has 14 mental factor
3. Sobhana group has 25 mental factor

Rpvacarajhna

The consciousness that arises mostly in the rpa brahma world is called rpvacara.
The rpvacaracitta is basically classified into 5 according to the 5 jhna stages. Then 5
multiflied by the 3 types, kusala, vipka and kriya, comes to 15.

1. vitakka-vicra-pti-sukhekaggat-sahita pahamajjhna
The 1st Jhna consciousness together with Initial Application, Subtained Application,
Joy, Happiness and One-pointedness.
2. vicra-pti-sukhekaggat-sahita dutiyajjhna
The 2nd Jhna consciousness together with Subtained Application, Joy, Happiness and
One-pointedness.

Maggacitta eradicated sayojana (fetters)

The Magga of Sotpatti completely eradicates: sakkya dihi (personality wrong-view),

vicikicch (doubt) and slabbataparms (clinging to ritual).
The Magga of Sakadgmi reduces: kmarga (sensual desire) and paigha (hatred). The
Magga of Angmi really eradicates these 2 sayojanas.
The Magga of Arahatta completely eradicates: rparga (desire for rpajhna), arparga
(desire for arpajhna), mna (conceit), uddhacca (mental restlessness) and avijj
(ignorance).

Abhidhamma Assignment DBHM (Vie 3)

Lokuttaracitta Ven. Hiripao

Describe Lokuttaracitta (Supramundane consciousness)

Being a vipassan yog, everybody wishes to be free from suffering, to attain

Nibbna. At the end of the way, with enough effort and pram, one discovers
what things really are. Each time enter the ariya-stream, the supramundane
minds appear in their process of consciousness.

Together with their mental factors, the supramundane consciousnesses eradicate

the mental defilements each time arising. Thats why these consciousnesses is
higher than and is out from three types of worlds (Lokuttara).

Basically there are 8 Lokuttaracittas including 4 Maggas (Moral consciousness)

and 4 Phalas (Resultant consciousness). Theyre Sotpatti (stream-entry) magga
and phala, Sakadgmi (once-returning) magga and phala, Angmi (never-
returning) magga and phala, and Arahatta (Arahatship) magga and phala. Each
of these consciousnesses can associate with 5 Rpvacarajhna in turn. So in
total, there are 40 Lokuttaracittas.

All beings are tied to the wheel of existence by 10 fetters. While Maggacitta is
appearing in ones mind with 8 maggaga (factors of Noble Eightfold Path),
some of these sayojana (fetters) is eradicated.

The Magga of Sotpatti completely eradicates 3: sakkya dihi (personality

wrong-view), vicikicch (doubt) and slabbataparms (clinging to ritual).

The Magga of Sakadgmi reduces 2 fetters: kmarga (sensual desire) and

paigha (hatred). The Magga of Angmi really eradicates these 2 sayojanas.

The Magga of Arahatta completely eradicates 5 others fetters: rparga (desire

for rpajhna), arparga (desire for arpajhna), mna (conceit), uddhacca
(mental restlessness) and avijj (ignorance).

There are the powers of supramundane consciousness in kilesa eradicating

function. Knowing these consciousnesses, we are able to understand how an
ariya becomes. Its not a sudden situation with miracle while changing from
puthujjana (ordinary one) to ariya. Therefore the more we understand what
Buddha taught, the more faith with wisdom develops in our mind.
