I got new ideas about how early exposure to computer science for girls in an encouraging
environment affects their decisions to go into CS fields later on in life. I could use some of the
methods used in Girls on Track in my own program.

c) -What challenges or puzzles have come up in your mind from the ideas and information presented?

Inoticedthatthestudyshowedthat,althoughgirlsaresupportedinmiddleand
highschool,whentheygettocollegetheytypicallydonotchoosemajorsinCS.
SomeofthereasonsforthisaremisunderstandingofwhatCSisandstereotypes
againstgirls,whichstillexistincollege.Toovercomethis,wemustmakesuregirls
understandwhatexactlyCSis.InordertoovercomethelowerenrollmentinCS
coursesincollege,however,weneedwiderchangeandawarenessofgirlsabilities
andthestereotypesthatsurroundthem.Thatproblemrequiresamuchlargerscale
change.

d) Can you provide at least two quotes and/or statistical information from your source that you think
might prove helpful and/or relevant to your project?
 In-depth interviews with 30 high school girls revealed that more than half have no image or have
incorrect images about "computer science" careers. Some perceive "computer science" as the use
of tools such as spreadsheets and databases rather than the design and development (creation)
of tools, and the repairing of hardware rather than the engineering of hardware. The creative and
inventive benefits of IT careers were hidden from these girls.

Professional experiences, including mentoring and opportunities for early exposure to real IT
applications and careers, should be made available to all students.

I got new ideas for why girls typically have a lower interest in computer science, beyond the
stereotyping and expectations. Girls, according to the article, are more interested in helping
humankind as a whole, and prefer jobs that can directly help other people. Computer science is
typically represented as a job where you sit in a cubicle and work alone, without any human
contact, which is very unappealing to girls. This is not the case, however, so I want to make sure I
make it clear to young girls that that is not the computer science industry, and their work can help
actual people and that computer science requires lots of human contact and discussion as well.

c) -What challenges or puzzles have come up in your mind from the ideas and information presented?

Females are also more likely to consider themselves "not the type to do well with computers," and
less likely to say they "could handle a more difficult computer course" (Young, 2000).

Computing careers are often perceived as involving little human contact, consisting mostly of
keyboard work and lacking in creativity. These job characteristics seem to be especially
unattractive to girls (Gilbert, 2002).
