we feel enriched by what we have found. But, in the same time, we realise how special our home

Patrimoniu este un cuvnt care a fost folosit prima dat n Frana, la o ntlnire din 1921 a Comisiei
Internaionale de Cooperare Intelectual. Aceast comisie este un strmo al instituiei care, mai
apoi, s-a numit UNESCO (Organizaia Educaional, tiinific i Cultural a Naiunilor Unite).
Termenul a fost mai apoi dezvoltat i a devenit din ce n ce mai important, astfel c nc din 1972,
UNESCO elaboreaz la Paris (Frana) o Convenie pentru protecia patrimoniului mondial, cultural
i natural, prin care sunt stabilite cteva reguli aplicabile tuturor rilor pentru a apra patrimoniul
de distrugere.
The word heritage has been used for the first time in France, in 1921 at a meeting of the
International Commission for Intellectual Cooperation. This Commission was the predecessor
of the institution that would later become UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization). The term has been developed over the following years and has gained
significant importance. Since 1972 UNESCO has elaborated a Convention for the protection of the
global cultural and natural heritage that establishes a few rules which apply to all the countries in
the world with the aim of preventing the destruction of the heritage.

la un loc numeroase valori, de la cldiri i obiecte, la cunotine, credine, obiceiuri, meteuguri?
Ei bine, putem s vedem patrimoniul nostru n primul rnd acas la noi! E vorba de povetile, dar
i de obiectele motenite de la bunicii ori strbunicii notri, i care sunt specifice locului, cum ar fi
modele i ornamente care se fac doar n sat, i care mai poart cu sine i amintirea celor dragi din
familia noastr. Mai putem gsi patrimoniul i pe strzile satului nostru, exemple fiind cldirile
vechi care sunt considerate monumente. Pentru marcarea acestora se folosete un semn special. De
fiecare dat cnd l vezi, nu uita c aceste cldiri sunt speciale prin istoria pe care o spun i din care
noi putem azi s nvm mult.
Dar de cte feluri sunt bunurile de patrimoniu cultural?
Where can we find the specific characteristics of a community? Where can we see this heritage that
brings together countless values: from buildings and objects, to beliefs, customs and crafts?
Well, a first place to look is our own home! We can find stories and objects inherited from our
grandparents or ancestors that are specific to the place where we live. An example are the different
patterns or ornaments that are made only in our village and that could also carry the memory of
our family and loved ones. Cultural heritage can also be found throughout our village, for example
the old buildings that have become monuments. In order to make us aware of them, they have been
marked with a special sign. Therefore, every time you see this sign keep in mind that these buildings
have their own special story to tell. Even today, we can learn a lot from these stories.
But how many types of cultural heritage are there?

C onsiderate mult vreme a fi cea mai valoroas component a patrimoniului sunt cldirile
monument, cu valoare istoric. Aici sunt incluse: biserici vechi, mnstiri, cldiri vechi, palate,
ceti, dar i case vechi, case memoriale, aezri vechi, monumente funerare, ori situri arheologice.
Toate acestea sunt denumite cu termenul de PATRIMONIU IMOBIL, pentru c nu pot fi micate
de pe locul unde sunt amplasate. Acest tip de patrimoniu este considerat a fi cea mai valoroas
component a patrimoniului cultural naional.
F or a long time now, buildings bearing historical value have been considered the most valuable
component of cultural heritage. Here we can include: old churches, monasteries, old buildings,
fortresses, but also old houses, memorial houses, old settlements, funeral monuments, or
archaeological sites. All of them are defined as IMMOVABLE HERITAGE because they cannot be
moved from their location. This type of heritage is considered to be the most important component
of the national cultural heritage.

2. PATRIMONIU MOBIL
O alt categorie important a patrimoniului este reprezentat de obiecte (sau bunuri culturale)
care au o valoare istoric deosebit, cum sunt: tablouri, icoane, sculpturi, vase de ceramic,
obiecte din sticl, obiecte din lemn ori din metal, esturi, piese de port popular, cri, manuscrise,
chiar i fotografii. Multe dintre acestea sunt depozitate n muzee ori colecii, n arhive, dar i n
diferite cotloane ale casei n care locuieti! Toate aceste obiecte sunt denumite cu termenul de
PATRIMONIU MOBIL, pentru c pot fi duse dintr-un loc ntr-altul, pot fi micate.
Gndete-te i tu la un obiect din satul tu, ba chiar de la tine din cas, care ar putea fi considerat
patrimoniu mobil! Ce ai alege? Un tergar? Un covor? Un vas de ceramic? Nu uita c, pentru ca un
obiect s aib valoarea patrimoniului mobil trebuie s fie special i s aib o valoare istoric aparte,
regsit poate n ornamentaia i materialul folosit, dar mai ales trebuie s fi fost creat i conceput
n comunitatea ta. Trebuie s fie o creaie specific doar satului, sau zonei n care locuieti.
n inutul Buzului multe obiecte de patrimoniu mobil se regsesc la Muzeul Timpul Omului de
la Mnzleti. Ai fost acolo? Ce i-a plcut cel mai mult? Trebuie s tii c acest muzeu este rodul
muncii unor oameni pasionai, doi profesori din sat care, mpreun cu elevii lor au strns de-a lungul
timpului obiecte vechi, reprezentative pentru sat. Mai apoi a fost creat acest muzeu n colaborare
cu Geoparcul inutul Buzului, un rol important avndu-l Muzeul Naional al ranului Romn din
Bucureti, care a dat o mn de ajutor.
Expoziia spune povestea satului, povestea legturii dintre om i pmnt, dar mai ales povestea
oamenilor care au trit aici. Ce zici? Cum crezi c ar arta un mic muzeu n satul tu? Care ar fi
obiectul care nu ar trebui s lipseasc din expoziie?

2. MOVABLE HERITAGE
A nother important heritage category is defined by objects (or cultural assets) that possess a
special historical value, like: paintings, religious icons, sculptures, ceramic bowls, glass items,
wooden or metal objects, fabrics, traditional garments, books, manuscripts, even photographs. Many
of them are stored in museums, collections or archives, but also in some corners of your own house!
All these objects are defined as a part of the MOVABLE HERITAGE because you can move them or
carry them from one place to another.
How about you think of an object from your village, or better yet from your house, that could be
considered a part of the movable heritage. What would you choose? A carpet? A ceramic bowl?
Dont forget that an object defined as movable heritage has to be special and to possess a unique
historical value. This value could be given for example by its ornamentation and material choice but
above all else, the object must have been conceived and made within your community. It has to be
something specific only to your village, or to the area youre living in.
In Buzu Land, a lot of objects identified as movable heritage can be found in The Time of Man
Museum from Mnzleti. Have you been there? What did you like the most? You should know
that this museum has been created thanks to several passionate people. Over the years two village
teachers, together with their students, have collected old items that are representative for their
village. After some time, the collaboration between the Buzu Land Geopark and the local community
resulted in the creation of this museum. An important role was played by The National Museum of
the Romanian Peasant, which gave a helping hand.
The Time of Man museum tells the story of the village, of the connection between man and earth,
but above all else the story of the people who lived here. What do you think? How would a small
museum look in your village? Which object shouldnt be excluded from this exhibition?

N u doar obiectele sau monumentele intr n categoria patrimoniului cultural, ci i toate aspectele
culturale ale vieii, care definesc modul de via al unei comuniti. Acestea sunt practicile,
expresiile, cunotinele, abilitile sau reprezentrile culturale motenite de-a lungul generaiilor.
C ultural heritage doesnt only include objects or monuments, but also the cultural aspects of the
day-to-day life that define a communitys lifestyle. These aspects are the practices, expressions,
knowledge, abilities, or cultural representations passed down through generations. They represent

Tot din patrimoniul imaterial fac parte i cunotinele despre locurile bune, locuri de unde putem s
facem rost de leacuri pentru diverse boli. Astfel, nmolul vulcanilor noroioi e bun pentru cei care
sufer de reumatism; izvoarele cu ap srat sunt folosite la gtit, ori la pus murturi peste iarn;
sau izvoarele cu ap vie, sulfuroas, bun de leac. Dar ce spui de plante? tii dac sunt folositoare
la ceva? Poate ntrebi bunicii la ce e bun ceaiul de suntoare, ori cel de coada oricelului; chiar i
ceaiul de mrar e bun la ceva! Sigur i vor spune, mai apoi, i alte plante bune de leac. Sau poate
eti curios s afli cum se vopsea mai demult lna, folosind plante? Ce culoare crezi c iese din frunza
de nuc fiart ore n ir? Dar din gutui? Chiar i aceste cunotine care poate c par nensemnate fac
parte din patrimoniul imaterial al unei comuniti. Iar n inutul Buzului nc se mai cunosc toate
acestea, ceea ce e neobinuit i face ca acest loc s fie special. Ei bine, chiar i reetele de mncare
sunt speciale aici. Numai cnd m gndesc la gogoii cu flori de salcm, ori la dulceaa din fructe
de soc... Delicioase! Ori la pscuele pregtite cu grij de Pati. Care e mncarea ta preferat, ori
desertul tu preferat? Ce ai vrea s nu se piard n timp, astfel nct i strnepoii ti s poat mnca the carefully prepared Easter Bread with sweet cheese filling. By the way, what is your favourite food
aceleai delicatese? Poi s notezi cteva reete de la mama sau de la bunica ta. Nu uita! Sunt i
acestea importante! i mai ales, gustoase!
Mai am cteva ntrebri pentru tine, iar unele
dintre ele se refer la obiceiurile care sunt doar
n satul tu. tii c fiecare zon se difereniaz
de altele prin obiceiurile pe care le au oamenii?
Iar n inutul Buzului nc s-au pstrat cteva
obiceiuri speciale. La tine n sat ce se ntmpl
de Crciun, de Anul Nou, ori de Pati? De
Rusalii sau de Sfntul Dumitru, cnd sunt
Moii de toamn? Tu ai participat la obiceiurile
din sat? Care e srbtoarea ta preferat? i
mai ales, care crezi c e cea mai important
srbtoare pentru satul n care trieti, cnd se
adun toi cei dragi mpreun?
The knowledge about the so-called good places, those where we can find cures for different illnesses is
also part of the intangible heritage. The silt of the mud volcanoes is a good remedy for those suffering
from rheumatism; the water from the salt springs is used for cooking, or for preserving pickles; while
the water from the sulphurous springs, also known as the water of life, is a good remedy for many
illnesses. But what about the plants? Do you know if they are somehow useful? Maybe you can ask
your grandparents what the tutsan tea is good for, or maybe the yarrow tea; there is even a good use
for dill tea! They will also tell you about other remedy plants, for sure. Or maybe youre curious to
find out how people used plants to dye wool? What colour do you think the thoroughly boiled walnut
leaf produces? But what about the colour produced by the quinces? Even this kind of knowledge that
may seem trivial is part of a communitys intangible heritage. In Buzu Land this knowledge is still
preserved, and this makes the place very special. In fact, even the food recipes are special here. When
I think about doughnuts with locust-tree jam or elderflower jam... Delicious! Or try thinking about
or dessert? What delicacy would you want your grandchildren to have around so they can also enjoy
it? Can you write down some recipes from your mother or grandmother? And keep in mind! They are
important too! Not to mention, very tasty!
I have a few more questions for you, and some of them are related to customs that are specific to your
village. Did you know that customs make each area different from others? In Buzu Land there are
many customs that are still being kept. How do people celebrate Christmas, New Year or Easter in
your village? What about Whitsunday, St. Demeter or the Fall Forefathers? Have you ever attended
a traditional celebration in your village? Which one is your favorite? And, most importantly, what is
the most significant celebration in your village, the one that brings family and friends together?

i pentru c am vorbit de Pati, tii c atunci se pregtesc ou roii, dar i ou ncondeiate cu
motive misterioase. Mai ncondeiaz cineva la tine n familie oule roii? Nu toat lumea mai tie
cum se fac aceste ou speciale, dar toat lumea le apreciaz, pentru c spun o poveste veche i dau
mrturie asupra ndemnrii oamenilor din satul tu. Mai sunt civa meteri care mai ncondeiaz
ou n Vintil Vod, dar i la Bisoca, ori la Mnzleti. Tot la Mnzleti sunt i ultimii olari din
inutul Buzului care nc modeleaz oale din lut. Poti vedea cteva dintre operele lor la Muzeul
Timpul Omului. n cteva sate nc se poart costumul popular, iar n unele chiar sunt femei care
nc mai tiu s fac o ie, ori o maram! E adevrat, meteugul se practic din ce n ce mai puin,
dar nc mai sunt astfel de femei pricepute. La Coli sunt civa meteri care mai tiu s dea form
chihlimbarului, adic pietrei soarelui, cea prin care, dac te uii, se spune c poi ghici viitorul. Iar
n Bozioru este un btrn fierar, care doar cu focul, fierul i ciocanul poate s dea form oricrui
lucru pe care l imaginezi, de la un simplu cui pn la o cru ntreag!
Tot aici, n inutul Buzului, mai sunt i dou persoane speciale, doi meteri deosebii care au fost
numii de ctre Ministerul Culturii tezaure umane vii. Este modul prin care meritele lor sunt
recunoscute la nivel naional. E vorba de Mircea Micu din Sruleti, un vestit meter cimpoier, care
a dedicat ani de zile s nvee copiii din sat s fac un cimpoi i s cnte la el. Nu mai gseti n alt
loc un om care s cnte mai bine din cimpoi ori din fluier, i care pe deasupra s i i prelucreze
instrumentul de unul singur! i mai este vorba i de Amelia Papazissu din Beceni, care ese covoare
din ln de capr, dar nu face acest lucru singur, ci i nva meseria esutului i pe copiii din sat,
asigurndu-i continuarea. La tine n sat sunt meteri care practic un vechi meteug? Du-te pe
la ei n vizit i ntreab-i de la cine au nvat, sau cum de au ales s continue meteugul. Ai s
ntlneti oameni generoi i deschii. Cine tie, poate tu vei fi cel care va nva meteugul, i l va choose to keep the craft alive. You will meet generous and open-minded people. And who knows?

And since we mentioned Easter, you know that this is when people dye eggs in red, but they also
decorate them with mysterious motifs. Is there someone in your family that still decorates the red-
dyed eggs? This is not a well-known practice, but everyone appreciates it because it tells an old story
and represents a testimony of the skills that the local people have. There are still some egg painters
in Vintil Vod, Mnzleti and Bisoca. Mnzleti is also the place where you can find some of the
last potters in Buzu Land. You can find some of their pots on display at the Time of Man Museum.
In a few villages people are still wearing traditional costumes, and in some villages there are still
women who can weave traditional blouses or headkerchiefs! The craft has become less practiced but
it has been kept alive by skilled women. In Coli you can find craftsmen that can shape the amber,
also known as the sun stone. It is said that if you look at the sun through an amber lens you can
get a glimpse of the future. In Bozioru there is an old blacksmith who can make anything you can
think of, from a nail to a whole waggon, using only fire, iron and a hammer!
Buzu Land is also the home of two other special craftsmen that have been appointed by the
Romanian Ministry of Culture with the title of Living Heritage. This is the way their merits
are nationally recognised. One of them is Mircea Micu from Sruleti, a famous bagpiper that has
dedicated years of his life to teaching the village children how to make and play a bagpipe. Theres
no other place where you can find such a gifted musician that can also craft his own instruments!
The other person we mentioned is Amelia Papazissu from Beceni. She knows how to weave goat
wool carpets and shes not doing it alone, shes passing the secrets of weaving on to the children of
her village, making sure that this craft is not lost. Do you have people that are still mastering an old
craft in your village? Pay them a visit and ask them who was it that taught them, or what made them

timpului. Aici sunt cteva locuri cu totul aparte: vulcanii noroioi, unde balaurul s-a refugiat de
teama lui Arbna, dup cum am aflat din povetile spuse de oamenii locului; trovanii, sau pietrele-
ciuperci care cresc; focurile vii, misterioase; piatra soarelui, sau chihlimbarul; zidul uriailor; malurile
cu sare, att de bun pentru murturi; apele vii i apele moarte, cu pcur. Ei bine, prin faptul c
sunt att de speciale din punct de vedere al tiinelor naturale, dar i pentru c sunt ncrcate
de informaii culturale prin povetile pe care oamenii le-au esut n jurul lor, pot fi uor incluse
n PATRIMONIUL NATURAL al regiunii. n acest tip de patrimoniu intr peisajele culturale, care
sunt importante n primul rnd pentru c sunt folosite de oameni i pentru c aici se regsesc
valori culturale i practici tradiionale, adic un patrimoniu imaterial care contribuie la afirmarea
identitii locale, adic la definirea spiritului locului. Afl i tu povetile sau legendele care se spun
despre locurile din mprejurul satului tu i i vei da seama c toate locurile au o semnificaie.
Tocmai de aceea, aceste locuri i povetile lor sunt importante pentru continuitatea cultural care se
ntinde de-a lungul generaiilor.

4. NATURAL HERITAGE
L ets continue our journey in discovering the heritage of Buzu Land. Its time you found out that
the place where you live is special because its a witness of time. There are some remarkable
places here in Buzu Land: the mud volcanoes, where people say a dragon hid out of fear of being
slain by the brave Arbna; the sandstone-concretions or mushroom rocks that never stop growing;
the mysterious eternal flames; amber also known as the sun stone; the rock formation known
as the wall of the giants; the salt mountains that provide such a good salt for pickles, or the
waters of life and the petroleum-bearing waters of death. Its because of their special natural
characteristics and because of the stories woven around them over the years, that these places or
elements can easily be included in the regions NATURAL HERITAGE. In this type of heritage we
include cultural landscapes, which are important because they are a part of peoples day-to-day
lives. Cultural landscapes are places imbued with cultural values and traditional practices, in other
words places rich in intangible heritage, which contribute to defining the local identity. Why dont
you find out about the stories and legends surrounding your village?
You will discover that every place has its own significance. This is why these places, together with
their stories are so important for the cultural continuity that stretches across generations.

5. PATRIMONIU VERNACULAR
A cum e timpul s vorbim de ultima categorie de patrimoniu, aa zisul patrimoniu mic, un
concept nou, care s-a nscut pentru c oamenii sunt ntotdeauna dornici s aprecieze frumosul,
regsit chiar i n obiecte care in de viaa cotidian, nu doar de ritual, ori de festiv. PATRIMONIUL
VERNACULAR, cci aa se numete acest tip de patrimoniu, se regsete mai ales n mediul rural,
pentru c la ora, deja, obiectele industriale au cucerit spaiul caselor noastre.
Vznd obiectele care se ncadreaz n aceast categorie ne gndim la miestria strmoilor
notri, care tiau s nfrumuseeze orice obiect folosit zi de zi, s l decoreze din plin, pentru a-i da
personalitate. Iat ce fel de obiecte intr n aceast categorie: piese de mobilier, cuptoare, diverse
unelte, vesel, dar i obiecte mai mari, chiar obiecte ritualice, cum sunt troiele, ori crucile de hotar,
precum i locuine vechi, uri, anexe gospodreti, fntni. Toate acestea amintesc de viaa i valorile
pe care le aveau strmoii notri. Cu siguran c i la tine n sat sunt multe obiecte de patrimoniu
vernacular. n primul rnd, s ne gndim la troie, ori la crucile de pomenire a celor decedai. Nu-i
aa c le vezi la tot pasul i te gndeti de fiecare dat la respectul oamenilor pentru strmoii lor?
La tine n vecini se afl undeva o veche cruce de pomenire? Dac eti curios, poi s i afli povestea.
De multe ori e scris pe cruce, dar poi s o afli i ntrebnd vecinii ti. i vor vorbi de strmoii lor.

5. VERNACULAR HERITAGE
N ow its time to talk about the last category of heritage, the so-called small heritage, a new
concept born out of peoples appreciation for the beauty that can be found in everyday objects,
and not only in those related to rituals or festivities. This type of heritage, called THE VERNACULAR
HERITAGE can be mostly found in rural areas, because in the cities the households have already
been conquered by mass-produced objects.
When we see these objects we think about how gifted our ancestors were, how they could make an
everyday object look beautiful, and give it its own personality through decoration. This category
includes: furniture, ovens, various tools, large items, ritual objects like roadside crosses, and also
old houses, haystacks, household annexes or wells. All of these items remind us of our ancestors
and their values. Im sure that items belonging to the vernacular heritage can also be found in your
village. For example, think about the roadside crosses or the memorial crosses. Isnt it true that you
can see them everywhere and when you do, they remind you of the respect people have for their
ancestors? Do you know of such a cross located close to you? If you are curious, you can find out its
story. The story is often written on the cross itself, but you can also ask your neighbours. They will
tell you about their forefathers.
