Thrust Bearings

Dear Sirs,

In the course of time a few cases of explosions in crankcase

have occurred caused by hot spots in thrust bearings owing to fai ling
supply of oi I.

The crankcase explosions, which have been serious on some

occasions with loss'es of lives and considerable values, have either been
ignited due to hot spots in the thrust bearing itself, or the white metal
has melted out of the bearing whereby the crankshaft has been displaced
in the longitudinal direction so that hot spots hove arisen between 0
crank web and a main bearing end surface.

A case which is fully cleared up happened in 1961 and was

caused by a piece of packing rubber which had been sucked up from
the oi I pan, had passed through the oi I pump and through the fi Iter in
which the fi I ter wire mesh proved to be corroded and burs t.

The filter was of the air cleaned type which is not to be

separated for cleaning, and it had not been inspected for years.

In another case which happened in 1968, where the supply

of oi I took place on the front end. of the engine, the aft of the longi-
tudina oil supply pipe was blocked up with sludge as shown on enclosed
sketch No. 1 91577.

Enclosed sketches No. 191576, 191577, and 191578 show

various embodiments for connection of branch pipes on the lubricating
oil supply pipe.

BURMErSTER & WArN

The embodiment shown on drawing No. 191576 only in-

volves a small risk that the oil supply to the thrust bearing is· being
fouled- due to deposits, but there is a risk for the aft branch pipes
to other I ubricat.ing points which are just as important.

Your attention is drawn to the fact that in the piping

system in the engine room similar IIdead ends ll as those shown on
the sketches may be present.

Precautionary Measures:

1. Keep the lubricating oil filter in order, clean it before the pres-
sure loss becomes high, and inspect the filter wire mesh once a year.

2. Inspect and, if necessary, clean lldead ends" in the lubricating sys--

tern (i .e. places where the oil speed is zero or low) for impurities
and sludge, for instance the main pipe of the engine which is easily
accessible by removing bl ind flanges (see sketches).

3. Since 1962 our air cleaned lubricating oil filters are made with
filter wire· mesh of stainless steel of 18/8 type which is resistant
to chemical and electrolytical corrosion which can attack bronze
wire mesh in case of water in the lubricating oil. We recommend
that stainless steel wire mesh is used at a possible exchange of wire
mesh.

4. Since 1962 all new engines are made with alarm for high temperature
in the thrust bearing, a thermo-contact being incorporated in one of
the thrust bearing segments for "Ahead". Such alarm feelers can for
small expenses he incorporated in the thrust bearings of older engines,
and for your information we e~close the below mentioned drawings of
such alarm connections:

the two internal, vertical walls of the thrust bearing, through which
the axial thrust is transmitted to the machinery foundation. The space
between the vertical walls and the thrust collar is taken up by a number
of segments 3139 and 3773, which are guided in recesses in the vertical
walls and are lined with white metal cast on the wearing faces againsf
the thrust collar. The segments are kept in place by means of the cross-
bars 3040.

The lubrication takes piece as described above.

The lubricating ci I is drained at 0 I from where the oi I is led to the

lubricating oi I bottom tank. The location of the hole D ensures the
desired oil level in the thrust beaiing.

To prevent the oi I from escapi ng from the beari ng, an oi I scraper ri ng

2150-2338 is fitted at each shaft passage, whence the leakage oi I is led
to the sump at the bottom of the thrust bearing.

Oil control for thrust bearing 182621/222342

Plate 81702

Under normal service conditions, i.e. pressure and temperature within

the prescribed limits, the thrust bearing pressure control is connected
for closed-circuit operation, max. 220 volts AC/DC.

In case the temperoture rises to 70 0 C, the change-over terminals 1-2

in system I (alarm and slow down) open.

In case of a further temperature rise to 80 0 C, the chonge-over terminals

1-2 in system II (shut down) open.

In case the oil pressure drops to 0.5 kg/cm 2 , the change-over terminals
red-white in system I (alarm and slow down) open.

In case CIf further drop in oi I pressure to 0.3 kg/ cm 2 , the change-over

termina/-s, yeilow-brown in system 11 (shut down) open.
