MM2020

Deformation and failure of materials-Spring 2017

Assignment on Dislocations

Name:

Due: March 27, Monday, 3:00 PM

Note: Students are free to discuss the questions with their classmates and the Teaching Assistant (TA).
However, each student is expected to hand in individual handwritten answer sheets. Strict disciplinary
action will be taken against students who are found guilty of malpractice. The answer sheets should be
legible and self-explanatory. Any assumptions made in the process of the arriving at solutions should be
explicitly written down.
Only questions 1-9 are graded.

1) Figure shows phase diagram of Al and Cu. At 300 oC what is the maximum weight
percent of copper in Al that could lead to solute hardening and what is the minimum
weight percent of copper in Al that would lead to precipitate hardening. Explain your
answer.

2) In the schematic shown below, a= 2 is inter-planar spacing of the glide plane and b =2
is lattice parameter. Given, ratio of ideal shear strength and experimental yield strength
is 100; calculate inter-planar spacing that would lower ideal shear strength to value of
experimental yield strength without introduction of dislocations.

(Distance between atoms not to scale)

3) Categorize following dislocations as either screw, edge or mixed. Write down at least one
slip plane for each dislocation.

No. Burgers Vector Line Direction Type Slip plane
1 [110] [110]
2 [111] [111]
3 [112] [111]
4 [112] [111]
5 [001] [100]

4) Figure shows generalized stacking fault energy as function of displacement along a [100]
direction (a=1). Can dislocation with Burgers vector [100] split? What are two
resulting Burgers vector.

5) Draw Burgers circuit and show the Burgers Vector using right-hand/finish start
(RH/FS) convention. Lattice parameter of perfect lattice is a.

6) The figure below shows three dislocations meeting at one point. What is the relationship
among b1, b2, and b3.

7) Why does nano-meter sized grains often contains no dislocations? (Hint: Something to do
with free surfaces)

8) Given dislocation a with (, )[220], [001] experience a stress 2 3 2 due to

dislocation b. Calculate force experienced by a per unit length exerted by dislocation b.

9) Given initial arrangement as shown in figure below, show equilibrium arrangement of
dislocations. Dislocation A is pinned at original position. Glide planes of all dislocations
are shown by dotted line. Dislocations cannot climb.

10)(Extra: for interested) Plot 2d stress field of a screw and edge dislocation, in a isotropic
medium with shear modulus G= 30 GPa and Poissons ratio of 0.35. Range for x axis is
from 10 nm to -10 nm and y axis is from 10 nm to -10 nm.
