& Movement in Art

Surrealism, Fluxus, Process, Performance, and Beyond
Art as Play
Drawing is a non-verbal
thinking process.
William Kentridge

Drawing has become an important way for me

to study movement and therefore time-
whether its a wrestling infant in a mothers
arms, couples embracing, a fight or children
digging in the sand.
Jenny Saville
Observational drawing a different perspective
Drawing to Practice: seated unsighted breath drawing
Steps:
Centering: Seated, paper and graphite on board in front of
artist eyes closed

BREATH. Focus on the breath.

3
World of drawing: Altering breathing and the body
Reflect
What effect did your focusing on your breathing have on the marks
that you made?
How did was it different after activity? What accounts for this?
How could this be considered observational drawing?
What other activity have we done that is similar?

Fluxus
Fluxus is an attitude.
It is not a movement or a style.

Fluxus is intermedia.
Fluxus creators like to see what happens when different media intersect. They use found
and everyday objects, sounds, images, and texts to create new combinations of objects,
sounds, images, and texts.

Fluxus works are simple.

The art is small, the texts are short, and the performances are brief.

Fluxus is fun.
Humour has always been an important element in Fluxus.

Process Art
Work that emphasizes the quality of the materials and the physical act of
making the work over the finished piece. Artists were interested in the
body, random occurrences and improvisation.

Performance Art
An art form combining visual art with dramatic performance.

Often the line between these two genres is blurred. Particularly when an object
is produced as a result of the performance.
Artists
Janine Antoni
Transforming everyday activities such as eating, bathing, and sleeping
into ways of making art, Antonis primary tool for making sculpture
has always been her own body. She has chiseled cubes of lard and
chocolate with her teeth, washed away the faces of soap busts made
in her own likeness, and used the brainwave signals recorded while
she dreamed at night as a pattern for weaving a blanket the following
morning.
Marina Abramovic
explores the relationship between performer and
audience, the limits of the body, and the possibilities
of the mind

The Artist is Present

a 736-hour and 30-minute static, silent piece, in
which she sat immobile in the museum's atrium while
spectators were invited to take turns sitting opposite
her.
Sharing Memories
Think of memories that:
Made you laugh until your face hurt
Define a specific time in your life
Scare you
Give you the warm fuzzies
Made you who you are
Include all or part of your family
Are about being completely alone
Are powerful
Are sad
You wish you could repeat but never can

Describe at least one memory for each category.

Select three as possible Performance/Process art pieces and script them.
Execute one of these pieces and document it with a video recording and, if it is a process piece, the
resulting object.
Criteria
Piece is based on a personal memory.
Piece includes props/costume/materials to help communicate meaning.
Pacing, lighting, choreography, and setting are appropriate to the piece.
Video documentation and object (if process art) are completed

Compose and artists statement describing the memory, why you selected
it, and how the performance or process piece is meant to communicate it.
Upload the video and paste your statement into this Padlet.
