FELDMANS METHOD OF

ART CRITICISM
Description
In 1962, Andy Warhol created a series of canvases known as the Campbells Soup Cans. Adding on,
this work is sometimes referred to as 32 Campbells Soup Cans because it consist of thirty-two
canvases. Each canvas was a painting of a different type of Campbells Soup Can the company
produced. Warhol created the shape of the cans by using rectangles and circles, but then he used
red, yellow, white, silver, gold, and black for color.
Analysis
Line, shape, color, space, and form are the elements of art that are used in the Campbells Soup
Cans by Andy Warhol. To start off, lines were used to create rectangles and circles to develop the
cylinder/form for the soup cans. Then, the cylinders represents positive space because the soup
cans also known as the subjects take up a part of the painting. After that, the space around the
object/background shows the negative space of the art. Secondary colors (red and yellow) and
achromatic colors (silver, gold, black, white) were used to create the painting. Moving on, the
principles of art seen in this work are pattern, proportion, balance, and unity. Each canvas is
proportional to one another because each measures 20 inches in height and 16 inches in width. As a
result, balance is also shown because the canvases and cans are the same size. Since, each canvas is
of a can of Campbells soup and there are thirty-two canvases that make up the image
repetition/pattern occurs. Lastly, unity is represented because the soup cans use the same color
and are the same in size.
Interpretation
Based on my perspective, feelings, and thoughts I believe that the message of the Campbells Soup
Cans is that the simplest things can be made into art, everybody is capable of making something
great without going overboard, and anyones artwork can become famous like the Campbells Soup
Cans by Andy Warhol.
Judgement
In my opinion, I think that the Campbells Soup Cans by Andy Warhol is an incredible piece of art
because of what the art says to me. Like I said before, the meaning to me is that everyone is
capable of making something great without going overboard and anyones artwork can become
famous like the Campbells Soup Cans by Andy Warhol. The message I get from this tells me that
the line on my paper wont always be perfect and I should always love my simple self. But most
importantly, this masterpiece make me feel CONFIDENT.
