Methods in Beams
1.)Double Integration Method

a.) Pros
It is more useful to use double integration method in solving
deflection and slope of a beam at any point because we will be able
to get the equation of the elastic curve.

b.)Cons
So many equation and the equation depends on the cutting of the
beam.

c.) Evaluation
It is tricky for me because of integrating the equations. Wrong
equation results to wrong answer.

d.)When to used
-More Convenient to use when asked for deflection at any point of
the beam

2.)Area Moment Method

a.) Pros
- Easier when beam is restrained
- Easier than Double integration method

b.)Cons
The cons in area moment method is having a long equation to input
in the calculator and drawing where to put the tangential line
because it is the basis for the equation of the deflection and change
in slope.

c.) Evaluation
It is time consuming for me because of so many numbers and
variables to input in the calculator. Other than that it is easier for
compare to double integration method
d.) When to use
-Easier to use when the beam is restrained

3.) Three Moment Equation

a.) Pros
Similar to area moment method but each span has an assumed
reaction. More reliable and faster to solve when you memorize the
formulas

b.) Cons
Not knowing the span and forgetting about the imaginary line that
becomes a span when there is a fixed support

c.) Evaluation
Easier and faster when solving compare to Area-moment method
for me.
d.)When to used
- Used when the beam has more than two supports
4.)Moment Distribution Method
a.) Pros
Only requires FEM and the algebra.
b.) Cons
- When balancing, positive and negative signs.
- If dont know the formulas of FEMs
c.) Evaluation
- It is easier and less time consumed when solving but should be
cautious in signs.
d.) When to use
- Used when the beam has different loads and have two or more
supports

5.) Slope Deflection Method

a.) Pros

- Less time consumed

- Requires only FEM
- Slope in fixed support equals to zero resulting to l lesser
unknowns in the equations
b.) Cons
- When assuming joint conditions
c.) Evaluation
Easy and faster to solve when you know already the joint
condition.
d.) When to use
-Used if there is a fixed support in beams to lessen some
unknowns

Method in Frames
1.)Moment Distribution
a.) Pros
- FEMs is similar to beams
-
b.)Cons
- Tricky when theres multiple legs in the frames.
- Sign conventions
c.) Evaluation
It is a moderate difficulty for me because it is tricky when the frames has
leg
(Not literally a human leg but a frame leg hehe)
d.) When to use
- Use when it is a simpler frame.

2.)Slope deflection
a.) Pros

- Similar also to beams

- Slope at fixed support becomes zero and lesser unknowns

b.)Cons
- When assuming joint conditions

c.) Evaluation
It is also easier because it is just the same in beams when solving for
moments and reaction the only difference is in the joint conditions.
d.) When to use
- Use when frames has frame legs.

3.)Portal Method
a.) Pros
- It has step by step process when solving
- Shear on the support is assumed
- No formulas
- Solved only my summating moment and forces only
b.)Cons
- Longer to solve if whole frames is being asked to solve

c.) Evaluation
It is easy to solve given a lot of frames because its just a summation of
forces and moments
d.) When to use
- Use when theres a lot of frames given
- If theres a lateral load given

4.)Cantilever Method
a.) Pros

- Approximate Axial forces is assumed by similar triangles in each floor

of frames
- No Formulas
- It has also a step by step process
- Solved also by summation moment and forces only

b.)Cons
- Time consuming when being asked for the whole frames
- Has more steps than portal method

c.) Evaluation
Cantilever method is also easy to solve like portal but more tricky.
d.) When to use
- Use when theres a lot of frame
- Lateral load is given

5.)Analysis for Vertical Loads

a.) Pros
- Has formulas for Maximum shears and Moments
- Faster to solve when having a lot of frames that are subjected to
vertical loading
b.)Cons
- Forgetting the formulas in the span

c.) Evaluation
- Fast and easy to solve
d.) When to use
- Used when the frames is subjected to vertical loadings.

Method in Trusses
1.)Virtual Work Method
a.) Pros

- Has only two formula used

- Only Summation of forces is used in solving for members and
sometimes summation of moment
- Can be tabulated for easy solving
- Has only 1 load either lateral or vertical
b.)Cons
- Longer to solve when given a large scale truss
- Sign conventions( tension and compression )

c.) Evaluation
Virtual work is easy to solve because of the applied virtual load and has a
formula to compute for a component of deflection.
d.) When to use
- used when computing a single component of deflection at any point of the
truss
2.)Influence Line
a.) Pros
- Can use method of joints or sections
- Has a diagram to show the deflection and where to put the load
- No formula is used
- Process is just repeating
- Subjected only to 1 unit load

b.)Cons
- Longer to solve when given a large scale truss
- Sign convention

c.) Evaluation
- Influence line is easy but takes time to solve. It is easy because it is
only subjected to 1 unit load.
d.) When to use
- Use when theres a live load or dead load that needs to place in the
truss.
