Hi. My name is Marie Belmonte Brummer. I joined the Transition to Teaching program at Saint
Mary-of-the-Woods College to obtain a double license in Secondary Spanish and French. I am
currently completing my student teaching in the morning and practicum in the afternoon. This
video is a reflective self-assessment on my ability to be a competent, caring, professional
educator and on my P-12 student impact.

First, I will document my professional behavior and responsibility using 3 artifacts:

a) The first one refers to my attendance and notes from a faculty meeting on a new online tool.
It will be implemented to qualitatively assess each student on work habits, responsibility, and
respect. As a teacher in the district already, I plan on adding this tool to my responsibilities
and use it on a regular basis. It will help me maximize my ability at framing teaching within
a moral, ethical and social context. I will make sure my students are aware of the nine
indicators I will use to assess them, indicators that will also make me reflect on my
professional behavior. This new tool will allow me to not only tailor students academic
behavior, but also develop collaboration with parents, and reach out to the other educators
and the community;

b) The second artifact is my parent/teacher conference. I proved to be a responsible, caring,

confident, and professional educator by maintaining a professional behavior, displaying
punctuality, using an open communication with parents, explaining students grades, making
decisions based on moral and ethical ideals, giving constructive feedback, focusing on
student learning, preventing, addressing, or resolving issues in the classroom, and finally
maintaining a positive relationship between students, parents and myself.

c) Then, one of the many responsibilities of an educator is to provide a safe environment. I

engaged in self-growth in this area by participating in a CPR training offered at SMWC on
March 3, 2017. The training was very hands-on and made me feel more confident about my
ability to be a competent and professional educator. I learned how to complete all the steps
of CPR for persons of all ages and how to use an automated external defibrillator.

The next 3 artifacts I will talk about demonstrate the impact I made on P-12 student learning and
growth:
a) I created my own Student Growth Assessment, for Secondary Spanish level 2 (grades 10th
and 11th) to collect quantitative student learning data. The questions for this test are aligned
to state academic standards. The objective is to measure each students academic growth.
The pre-assessment helped me identify areas for improvement and set professional and
rigorous goals. The average score was 32%. 3 months later, I gave them the post-assessment
and the average score was 70%. I reached student growth by setting up realistic objectives,
using weekly evaluations, humor, reorganization, follow though, and by being persistent and
a role model to maintain and increase students motivation. The respect my students show
me, the classroom atmosphere, and their progress prove that those strategies are effective.

b) My second artifact is my practical sample of the Teacher Work Sample that demonstrates my
impactful ability to use research to implement the best research-based practices to monitor
student progress. The strategies I used include direct, and scaffolding instruction, and clear
learning goals, expectations, and content delivery. I also used formative and summative
assessment methods. The average grade went from 4 out of 10 to 6.5. As confirmed by
Black & William (1998), formative assessment is a vital curricular component, proven to be
highly effective in increasing student learning.

c) Last, I want to talk about the qualitative data related to claim statements in my teaching
philosophy. Although this is not a quantitative measure, this document serves as a reference
in my commitment to P12 impact. I would like my students to be continuously engaged in
the learning process while monitoring their learning to have a positive student impact and
providing them a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

To conclude, I am able to act ethically and with integrity, set an example for others, and make a
positive impact on student learning. This 5 minute video was an opportunity for me to reflect on
my ability to connect the content of the artifacts I created with the content of EDPG 11 and my
P-12 student impact.
