The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) envisions a more equitable world where

GeographicInformationSystem(GIS)Officer

Overview
The GeographicInformationSystem(GIS)Officerwillconductspatialanalysisandremotesensing
workforvariousresearchactivitiesandprojectswithinCIFOR.TheGISOfficerwillsupportCIFORsGIS
workbymanagingtheresourcesincludinghardware,softwareanddatainfrastructure.TheGISofficer
willalsoberequiredtocontributetothedevelopmentofresearchmethodologiesrelatedtospatial
analysiswork,tothedevelopmentofspatialdatamanagementplansandimplementation(tomake
sure that CIFORs research data are well maintained and accessible), and to participate in the
disseminationofspatialdatainIndonesia.

Summaryofresponsibilities
TheGISOfficerwillreporttotheResearchtoImpact(RTI)teamleaderandsupportGISworkacross
arangeofCIFORledresearchprojects.She/hewillbeaccountableforthefollowing:
a) Researchactivities:
Formulate methods for spatial analysis for supporting various research activities within
CIFOR.
Conductspatialanalysesthatwillinvolvecompilationand/ordevelopmentofmaps,remote
images, GIS and other spatial analyses to support research projects and/or dissemination
activities.
DevelopmetadataofGISprimaryfilesgeneratedfromresearchactivities.
b) GISdatamanagement:
Developaspatialdatamanagementplanbasedonbestpracticesandinternationalstandards
aswellasimplementit.
WorktogetherwithotherCGcenterstomakesurethatthespatialdatamanagementplan
andimplementationcomplywithCGIARpolicy.
Developguidelinesonhowtoarchivesecondarydatainvolvedinresearchactivities,aswell
as primary data produces and to update, synchronize and maintain the GIS files and
geodatabasefortheCIFORGISserver.
Developtoolsforstafftohelpthemmanageandfinddatasets.


c) GISdatamanipulationandspatialdataanalysis:
PerformGISmanipulationandanalysis,suchasoverlaysandconversionofcoverages,data
format and projection convertion, GPS data collection/postprocessing/projection, data
reconcilliation,etc.
Performremotesensingmanipulations,suchasgeoreferencing,imagecalibrations,image
processingandanalysis,featureextractionandproducelandcover/landusemaps.
Performspatialdataanalysisandormodellingthatallowsdataintegrationinvariousways
torevealrelationships,patternsandtrends.
d) GISdatavisualizationanddatasharing:
Design,produce,andprintmapsandotherformsofgraphicproductsforCIFORprojectsand
scientists.
DevelopaplatformtoenableCIFORtodisseminatespatialdatatothepublicthroughonline
mappingplatforms.
e) MaintenanceofGISinfrastructure:
MaintainGISinfrastructure(server,databaseandonlineplatform)tomakesureitisalways
easilyaccessible.
ProvideGIStechnicalsupport(troubleshooting,licenseactivation,providecurrentsoftware,
etc.)
f) Partnerships:
Establish and maintain professional cooperation, linkage and partnerships with relevant
institutionswhoseintensionsandworkprogramsarerelatedtoCIFORresearch.
Where necessary, develop a comprehensive technical GIS module and remote sensing
trainingmaterialsforstaff,collaboratorsand/orpartnerswhorequirebasicGISknowledge.
g) Dissemination:
Contributetovariousdisseminationactivitiesincludingactiveparticipationinmeetingswith
stakeholders,seminars,workshops,exhibitionsetc.


Requirements
Education,knowledgeandexperience:
Bachelorsdegreeinecology,environmentalstudies,forestryorgeography.AMastersdegree
wouldbepreferred.
A minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience in developing and conducting
spatialanalysisandspatialdatamanagement
Advanced knowledge of ArcGIS (desktop and server), Spatial Analysis and Image Processing
Software(e.g.ErdasImagine,ENVI,Definiens)aswellasdatamanagement
Strongcomputerskillsinthemainsoftwareprograms(Excell,Word,Access,SPSSetc.)
Strong computer skills in information technology and programming would be an advantage
(DBMS,phyton,php,javascript)
Experienceworkingwithavarietyofremoteimageries,e.g.IKONOS,GeoEye,Landsat,SPOT
Basic knowledge of the CGIARS (or other international agencies) systems, networks and
processeswouldbepreferred
Experienceworkinginamultidisciplinaryenvironment.

Termsandconditions
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position. CIFOR offers competitive remuneration in
IndonesianRupiah(IDR),commensuratewithskillsandexperience.
Theappointmentwillbeforaperiodoftwoyears,inclusiveofasix(6)monthprobationperiod,
with the possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the
positionandavailableresources.
