DISCLOSUREOFINVENTION

Theobjectofthepresentinventionistoprovideanimproveddeviceforsortingofpellets,whichprovidesanincreased
capacityandefficiency.Thisobjectisachievedwithadevice,thecharacteristicsofwhicharedescribedintheappended
claim1.Theinventionalsorelatestoamethodforsortingpellets,thecharacteristicsofwhicharedescribedinthe
appendedclaim7.

Theinventioncomprisesatransportationdeviceforfeedingthepellet,afirstcontainerforfaultlesspelletsfedovertheend
portionofthetransportationdevice,asecondcontainerfordefectivepellets,adetectorfordetectingofdefectivepellets
andasortingdeviceforfeedingthedefectivepelletstosaidsecondcontainer.Theinventionischaracterisedinthatthe
transportationdeviceisarrangedwithanangleofinclinationrelativetothehorizontalplanewhichisselectedwithina
predeterminedintervalcorrespondingtoapredetermined,limitedscatteringofthetrajectoryofthefaultlesspelletsfed
overtheendportionofthetransportationdevice.

Accordingtoapreferredembodimentoftheinvention,thetransportationdeviceconsistsofavibrationfeeder.
Furthermore,theinventionpreferablycomprisesafrequencysensorformeasuringthevibrationfrequencyofsaidvibration
feeder,andacontrolunitfunctioningtooperatethevibrationfeederatafrequencyadjustedtogenerallycoincidewiththe
mechanicalresonancefrequencythereof.

Throughtheinvention,anevenandcontrolledflowofpellet,andahighcapacityofdetectionandsortingoutofdefective
pellets,isachieved.Afurtheradvantageisthatthesortedout,contaminatedpelletsmaybeanalysedatahighcapacity,
offeringapossibilityoftracingthereasonwhytheywerecontaminated.

PREFERREDEMBODIMENT

Accordingtoapreferredembodiment,theinventioncomprisesafeedingdevice,preferablyintheformofacontainer1for
acertainamountofpellet2,i.e.generallyballorgrainshapedelements.Theinventionisparticularlysuitableforusein
connectionwiththemanufactureofelectricalcablesforhighandmediumhighvoltages(fromabout50kVupwards),
wherebythepellet2consistsofarawmaterialofpolythenebeingusedformanufacturinganelectricallyinsulatingcoating
forsuchcables.

vibrationfeeder3inordertoobtainoptimumcapacity(i.e.feedingspeed)ofthecompletedevice.Thedrive5isinturn

Thepellet2isfedbythevibrationfeederinthedirectionoftheendportion3ofthevibrationfeeder3,atwhichafirst

Thedetector9ispositionedasmalldistanceinsidetheendportionofthevibrationfeeder3,forscanningthepellets2just
beforetheyreachthisendportion.Ifthecontrolunit6determinesthatanypassingpelletisdefective,thiswillentailan
activationofaparticularsortingoutdevice11intheformofatransversalarrayofnozzlesforemittingcompressedair.
Thissortingoutdevice11,whichisconnectedtothecontrolunit6byafurtherelectricalconnection12,isarrangedbelow
theendofthevibrationfeeder3,transversaltoitslongitudinaldirection.Accordingtowhatwillbedescribedindetail
below,thecontrolunit6canactivatethesortingoutdevice11whenthediscovereddefectivepelletpassesthecrestatthe
endportionofthevibrationfeeder3.Thiscanbecalculatedinthecontrolunit6independenceofthepositionofthe
detector9andindependenceofthespeedwithwhichthevibrationfeeder3istransportingthepellet2.Asthedetector9
isalsofunctioningtodetectinwhattransversalpositionofthevibrationfeeder3thedefectivepelletislocated,thesorting
outdevice11canbeactivated(i.e.acertainnozzlecanbeactivated)exactlywhenthedefectivepelletispassingthecrest
attheendportionofthevibrationfeeder3.Thisactivationwillcauseacorrespondinglylocatedairvalveofthesortingout
device11tobeactuated,causingthedefectivepellettobeinfluencedbyanairstreamandbecarriedtoasecond
container13whichisintendedfordefectivepellets.Thissecondcontainer13islocatedadjacenttothefirstcontainer8
andisseparatedtherefrombymeansofapartitionwall14.

ReferringtoFIG.2,whichisasomewhatenlargedperspectiveview,showingtheendportionofthevibrationfeeder3and
thesortingoutdevice11,onecangatherhowthepellets2arefedinthedirectionofthecrestformedattheendportionof
thevibrationfeeder3.Thisisschematicallyindicatedbyafirstpellet2athatisassumedtobefaultlessandthatwillthus
falldownintothefirstcontainer8.Hadthepelletinsteadbeenjudgedasbeingdefective,thesortingoutdevice11would
havebeenactivated,inaccordancewithwhathasbeendescribedabove,wherebyairwouldhavebeenfedthroughanair
nozzleandinthiswaycarriedthepellettothesecondcontainer13.Thisisschematicallyindicatedatthereference
number2b.

Accordingtowhatwasdiscussedintheintroduction,thereisaprobleminconnectionwithpreviouslyknownsystemsfor
sortingpellets,withhighcapacities,thatanexcessivelylargeamountoffaultlesspelletsarepassingthepartitionwalland
thusfallingintothesecondcontainer,inspiteofactuallybeingfaultless.Thisphenomenoncanbeshowntobecausedby
thefactthatthevibrationfeedertransfersacertainmovementtothepellets,which,togetherwiththeforceofgravityacting
onthepelletsjusthavingpassedthecrestattheendportionofthevibrationfeeder,willgivethepelletsacertain
trajectory.Thistrajectorywillthenvarytoarelativelyhighdegreefortherespectivepellet,andwillthusexhibitacertain
scattering,leadingtotheabovephenomenon.Thefactthatthepelletspassingthecrestattheendofthevibrationfeeder
exhibitacertainscatteringinthecurvedtrajectorytheydefine,willthenentail,statistically,thatacertainfractionof
faultlesspelletswilllandinthewrongcontainerevenifnosortingoutdevicewasactivated.Thisproblemissolved,
accordingtothepresentinvention,byarrangingthevibrationfeeder3withanextensionthatissomewhatinclinedwith
referencetothehorizontalplane.AccordingtowhatmaybegatheredparticularlyfromFIG.1,thevibrationfeeder3is
arrangedsoastoformacertainanglearelativetothehorizontalplane.Thevalueofthisangleaisselectedwithinan
intervalthatisprimarilydelimitedbyamaximumanglemax,whichisdefinedastheanglewherethepellet2becomes
loosefromthesurfaceofthevibrationfeeder3andwillthusacceleratefreelyalongsaidsurfacewithoutbeingretainedby
thefrictionagainstthevibrationfeeder3.Preferably,theangleisofthemagnitude1020,whichcorrespondstothe
movementtransferredtothepellets(duetothemovementandinclinationofthevibrationfeeder3)whenpassingthe
crest,substantiallyagreeingwiththeirtrajectory.Thiswillinturnleadtolessscatteringofthetrajectory.Byarrangingthe
vibrationfeeder3atsaidangle,asmallerscatteringofthetrajectoryofthefaultlesspelletsfedovertheendportionof
thevibrationfeeder3isachieved.Thiswillreducetheriskoffaultlesspelletslandinginthesecondcontainer13andwill
thusincreasetheefficiencyofthearrangementaccordingtotheinvention,comparedtopreviouslyknownsystems.

Thevalueoftheangleisalsodelimitedbyasmallestanglemin,definedbyananglewhereasubstantialdecreasein

ontoafirmbase15,ascanbegatheredprimarilyfromFIG.1.Moreprecisely,thevibrationfeederismountedonthebase

operation.Thesystemaccordingtotheinventionfurthercomprisesmeansfordetectingthevibrationfrequencyofthe
vibrationfeeder3.Preferably,saidmeansconsistofafrequencysensor16,providedinconnectionwiththevibration
feeder3andbeingconnectedtothecontrolunit6viaanelectricconnection17.

Evenifthedrive5utilisesafixednetworkfrequencyasthebasisforthevibrationfrequencyofthevibrationfeeder3,a
problemcouldoccurifthenetworkfrequencywouldvary,whichisacommonoccurrence.Forthisreason,abasicprinciple
oftheinventionistoutilisearepresentationoftheactualvibrationfrequencyofthevibrationfeeder3(which
representationisprovidedbythefrequencysensor16)asafeedbackforcontrollingthefrequencyoftheactuatingvoltage
fromthedrive5.Moreprecisely,thecontrolunit6thencontrolsthedrive5withafrequencythatsubstantiallycoincides
withthecurrentmechanicalresonancefrequencyofthevibrationfeeder3.Thedrive5isthenfunctioningsoasto
substantiallyfollowthefrequencydeliveredbythefrequencysensor16continuously,andtolockthedrivefrequencyofthe
vibrationfeeder3ontothatvalue.Alsoduringanychangesoftheresonancefrequencyofthevibrationfeeder3,for
exampleoccurringbecauseofchangesintemperature,thedrive5willfollowthemeasuredfrequencyduringoperationof
thevibrationfeeder3.Preferably,thevibrationfeeder3isoperatedwithamaximumdeviationfromthemechanical
resonancefrequencyofabout12%.Throughoperatingthevibrationfeeder3substantiallyatitsexactmechanical
resonancefrequency,ahighefficiencycanbeachievedwithouthavingtosupplyexcessamountsofenergy.

Accordingtoafurtherimprovedembodiment,thedrive5canbecontrolledsoastouseavoltagewitharaisedfrequency,
whichcorrespondstoareducedstrokeofthevibrationfeeder3,comparedtothesituationatthenormalnetwork
frequency.Throughthisreducedstrokeofvibration,afurtheradvantageisachievedintheformofacontrolledmovement
oftheconveyedpellets2,whileatthesametimeobtaininganincreasedcapacity.Preferably,araisedfrequencyofmax1
kHzisusedfortheinvention.

Theinventionisnotlimitedtotheembodimentsdescribedaboveandshowninthedrawings,butcanbemodifiedwithin
thescopeoftheappendedpatentclaims.Forexample,theinventioncouldbeusedfordetectionandsortingofvarious
kindsofpellet,notjustpolythenepelletintendedforcablemanufacture.

Inprinciple,anincreasedcapacityofasystemaccordingtotheinventioncanbeachievedbyusinganinclinedvibration
feeder3,i.e.withoutcontrollingitsfrequencyasperabove,andviceversa.

Thefeedingdevicemayinprincipleconsistofabowloracorrespondingcontainer,or,alternatively,aseparateconveyor
beltforfeedingthepellet.

Finally,thevalueofthefrequencyofthevibrationfeeder3may,asanalternative,bedeterminedbydetectionofthephase
differencebetweenthecurrentandvoltageusedforoperatingthevibrationfeeder3.
